Mason Williams Doubles Home Winning Runs in Eighth
Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) crossed home twice in the last of the eighth to complete a 6-5 comeback against the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders (37-25) claimed their third consecutive series against the Red Wings (28-32) and have won six-of-eight meetings.
Trailing 5-4 going to the last of the eighth, Greg Bird worked a leadoff walk against right-hander Michael Tonkin (1-2). Tyler Austin then muscled a bloop single to center. After two straight hitters were retired, Mason Williams earned a full count before rocketing a double that was just fair into the right field corner. Bird and Austin both scored for a 6-5 lead.
Joe Mantiply (3-3) fired 1.2 scoreless innings in relief and yielded one hit with a strikeout. He combined to finish the game with J.R. Graham, who earned his first save with SWB by striking out the final batter.
Kyle Higashioka opened the RailRiders’ scoring in the last of the third by tattooing a home run out to left. Higashioka finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. The backstop has two homers and six RBI over his last three games.
Gleyber Torres smashed a two-run triple off the right-center wall in the fourth, his first three-bagger as a RailRider. Tyler Wade singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games, the longest active stretch in the International League.
