SYRACUSE METS DEFEAT IRONPIGS

Allentown, PA (April 29, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 7-4, at Coca-Cola Park on Monday evening. Four Syracuse players had multiple hits in the game as the Mets scored the game’s final six runs en route to the victory.

Syracuse (15-9) started the scoring in the top of the first inning. Rajai Davis led off the game with a single and scored from first base two batters later on an Adeiny Hechavarría double down the left-field line to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. 

Lehigh Valley (16-7) answered with a run in the bottom of the second. The IronPigs loaded the bases on two walks and a single with no outs. Damek Tomscha then grounded into a double play, but it was enough to score Andrew Romine from third on the play to tie the game, 1-1.

The IronPigs took the lead in the fourth. Dylan Cozens walked, and Romine doubled. Deivy Grullon followed with a single to center field to score both runners and give the IronPigs the lead at 3-1. Three batters later, Malquin Canelo doubled to center, scoring Grullon and extending the lead to three, 4-1. 

The comeback Mets were at it again though, beginning in the sixth. Hechavarría singled to begin the frame, and three batters later, Dilson Herrera hit his third home run of the season to bring Syracuse within one, 4-3.

The Mets took the lead for good in the eighth. Carlos Gómez singled to begin the inning. On a Travis Taijeron strikeout, Gómez stole second on the strike-three pitch and moved to third when Grullon’s throw from behind the plate sailed into center for an error. Gómez then scored on a wild pitch from Yacksel Rios to tie the game, 4-4. Herrera then walked and stole second base, his eighth stolen base of the year. Herrera moved to third on a balk and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gregor Blanco for a 5-4 Mets advantage.

In the ninth, the Mets added two more runs. Tom Windle walked three of the first four batters of the inning to load the bases with one out. Gómez followed with a two-run double to left field to push the lead to three, 7-4.

Syracuse’s bullpen was stellar once again. Casey Coleman, Jacob Rhame, Tyler Bashlor, and Arquimedes Caminero combined to throw five scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, no walks, and striking out four batters.

The Mets and IronPigs continue their four-game series on Tuesday night. RHP Chris Flexen is scheduled to throw for Syracuse opposite RHP Drew Anderson for Lehigh Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
