METS & RAILRIDERS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

Moosic, PA (April 27, 2019) - The Syracuse Mets and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon and evening at PNC Field with the RailRiders winning the completion of Friday’s suspended game, 7-6, in ten innings, while the Mets won the second game, 3-2.

Syracuse (14-9) scored in the first inning on Friday night. After a rain delay of the start of the game of an hour and 56 minutes, Syracuse’s run on Friday came in the top of the first inning. With one out, Danny Espinosa hit an opposite-field home run over the left-field wall for a 1-0 lead.

Chris Flexen started the game for the Mets and struck out Brad Miller to begin the bottom of the first inning, but with a 3-2 count on Cliff Pennington and rain continuing to fall, the umpires called for the tarp to be put on the field. After another delay that lasted an hour and 12 minutes, the game was suspended until Saturday.

On Saturday, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (10-10) grabbed its first run of the first game in the bottom of the second. Kyle Higashioka walked, and Gosuke Katoh and Zach Zehner each singled to load the bases. After Héctor Santiago got the next two batters, he walked Brad Miller to force in a run and tie the game, 1-1.

The Mets quickly answered in the top of the third. Grégor Blanco and Espinosa singled to put runners on the corners. After Espinosa stole second base, Carlos Gómez hit a two-run single to left field to plate both runners and push the lead to 3-1.

Walks plagued the Mets again in the bottom of the third. With one out, Ryan Lavarnway, Higashioka, and Katoh all walked in a row to load the bases. Zehner then singled to right field to score Lavarnway and cut the Mets lead to one, 3-2.

The game held at 3-2 until the seventh. Tomas Nido reached to start the top of the frame on an error on Katoh at second. Blanco then singled with one out, and Espinosa continued his big game with a two-run double to center field to extend the lead to 5-2.

The RailRiders answered in the bottom of the seventh though. Katoh and Zehner singled, followed by a double-play grounder from Billy Fleming to put a runner on third and two outs. Matt Lipka singled to left field to score Katoh and trim the lead to two, 5-3. The lead evaporated two pitches later as Miller hit a two-run home run to right to tie the game at five.

The game stayed tied and went to extras. Espinosa started the tenth inning on second base. He moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Gómez single to center to give the Mets a 6-5 lead. Rajai Davis then walked to put two runners on base but Gómez was tagged out by J.P. Fyereisen trying to steal third base. After another walk put two runners on again, Feyereisen struck out Tim Tebow to end the threat.

The one run would not be enough. In the bottom of the tenth, Matt Lipka was the runner starting on second, and he was thrown out on a fielder’s choice for the first out of the inning, but Miller was safe at first base on the play. Cliff Pennington followed with a walk-off two-run home run to right field to give the RailRiders a 7-6 win.

In the second game, the Mets jumped out to an early lead. Espinosa doubled with one out and moved to third on the play because of a throwing error by Mandy Alvarez at third base. Adeiny Hechavarría grounded out to the right side, which was enough to score Espinosa for a 1-0 advantage.

In the third, Blanco added to the lead. After a René Rivera walk, Blanco hit his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field for a 3-0 Mets lead.

The RailRiders added a run in the fifth. Kelvin Deglan singled and moved to second base three batters later on a walk. He scored on a Miller double to cut the score to 3-1.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre brought the winning run to the plate in the seventh. With two outs, Miller tripled. Ryan McBroom followed with an infield single, scoring Miller to cut the Syracuse lead to one, 3-2. Mets reliever Tyler Bashlor struck out Gosuke Katoh for the final out of the game, giving Syracuse the 3-2 win.

The Mets and RailRiders conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
