PAWSOX STRIKE BACK: SWB FALLS BY SINGLE TALLY
Adams gets no-decision in his first quality start of season
MOOSIC, Pa. (May 4, 2018) – A late comeback bid fell short as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders were defeated by the Pawtucket Red Sox 5-4 on Friday night at PNC Field. The defeat ended a three-game winning streak for the RailRiders.
Pawtucket took an early 1-0 lead when Mike Ohlman connected for a solo home run against Chance Adams. The right-hander would allow a second solo home run to Ohlman in the top of the sixth, but otherwise was strong in his sixth start of the season.
Adams allowed just two runs on three hits in 6.0 innings, walking two and striking out four. The outing was the first quality start of the season for the prospect hurler.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre threatened against starter William Cuevas, pushing a runner into scoring position in each of the first two innings, but couldn’t break through with a tally. The PawSox starter allowed three hits in six shutout innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Red Sox plated a run against Oliver Perez. Jeremy Barfield doubled and came around to score on a single from Chad De La Guerra to extend the advantage to 3-0.
The RailRiders broke through in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Williams Jerez. Billy Fleming singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Zack Zehner drove him in with a single. Tyler Wade continued the rally with a single to put runners on the corners, and Thairo Estrada delivered a hit-and-run single to plate two runs and tie the game at 3-3.
The Red Sox struck back in the top of the eighth to regain the lead. With runners on first and second, Jordan Betts doubled down the third base line to plate a run. Following an intentional walk to Aneury Tavarez to load the bases, a passed ball chased home a second tally to give Pawtucket a 5-3 edge.
In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan McBroom doubled to right center against Ryan Brasier and scored on a single from pinch hitter Adam Lind. Wade reached on an infield single to put runners at first and second, but Brasier was able to settle down and close the door for the PawSox.
Kyle Martin (3-1) got the win in relief for Pawtucket, while Lail (3-1) was felled with his first loss of the season. Brasier’s save was his second of the campaign.
The RailRiders hit the road to begin the road episode of the home-and-home series with the Red Sox Saturday night at McCoy Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. LHP Josh Rogers (2-2, 3.00) takes the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while RHP Chandler Shepherd (0-2, 7.36) toes the rubber for Pawtucket.
