WEBER TAKES LEAD INTO PBA50 TOURNAMENT

Pete Weber Moves Into PBA50 National Championship
Lead After Second Round

THE VILLAGES, Fla. (April 26, 2018) – Starting his 2018 PBA50 Tour season with a fresh outlook on his game, PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber fired a 1,389 six-game pinfall total in the second round Thursday to take the lead in the PBA50 National Championship presented by Spanish Springs Lanes and Radical.

Looking to get back on the winning track after a winless 2017 season, Weber bowled games of 236, 269, 227, 246, 244 and 167 in the second round to move from seventh after the first round to take the lead with a 2,771 12-game pinfall.

“I’m making a very strong effort to change my attitude,” said the 55-year-old Weber. “Basically, I’m trying not to get mad and keep my cool when things aren’t going well. The 167 I bowled in the last game was a good example. I was disappointed, but I didn’t let it upset me like it would normally.”

Weber, an 11-time PBA50 Tour titlist, his hoping to come back after a disappointing 2017 season which came after his record breaking 2016 PBA50 Player of the Year season in which he won six tournaments and four in a row.

“Last year wasn’t a good year and part of it was because I was probably making it worse by getting mad every time things weren’t going well,” Weber added. “This year I’m feeling good and I’m trying to enjoy myself a little more out here. “I’ve always enjoyed bowling out here on the senior tour but in general I’m trying to stay more positive.”

Weber holds a 26-pin lead over George Gomez of Orlando, Fla., bowling in only his second PBA50 Tour tournament. Gomez bowled games of 199, 225, 217, 202, 279 and 223 in the second round and finished with a 2,745 pinfall for two rounds.

Former Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher John Burkett of Southlake, Texas, who also bowled 1,389 in the second round, bowled games of 218, 279, 277, 193, 183 and 239, to finish the day in third with 2,715.

Burkett is hoping to improve upon his previous best PBA50 Tour finish of fourth in the 2015 Northern California Classic. His best finish in a major was 11th in the 2017 PBA50 Miller Lite Players Championship.

Rounding out the top five after the second round were Gary Faulkner of Norfolk, Va. with 2,712 and PBA Hall of Famer Bryan Goebel of Shawnee, Kan., with 2,711.

The 171-player field returns for the final six-game qualifying round Friday beginning at 9 a.m. ET after which the top 32 players will be determined for Saturday’s first round of match play at 9 a.m. After the first round of match play the top 16 players will advance to the second match play round at 2 p.m. which will determine the top five players for the stepladder finals at 7 p.m.

All rounds of the tournament, including the stepladder finals, are streamed live exclusively on PBA’s  online bowling channel Xtra Frame. For subscription and schedule information visit xtraframe.tv.
