Power bats, power arms pace RailRiders in series finale

MOOSIC, Pa. (April 22, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pounded out 12 hits and defeated the Toledo Mud Hens 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field.  The RailRiders snapped a five-game losing skid and ended Toledo’s six-game winning streak in the process.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pounced on Toledo starter Ryan Carpenter for a run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Abiatal Avelino led off with a double down the left field line and stole third base before Shane Robinson brought him home with a fielder’s choice groundout.
Chance Adams was strong for the RailRiders in the early innings and struck out six of the first seven batters he faced. In the top of the fourth, a two-out walk followed by a two-run home run by Chad Huffman put the Mud Hens ahead 2-1. Adams did, however, turn in one of his best starts of the season, allowing only three runs on two hits in 5.2 innings.

The RailRiders loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth.  Billy Fleming was hit by a pitch on the foot to drive in Erik Kratz with the tying run. L.J. Mazzilli then hit into a double play which brought home Zack Zehner with a second tally, handing Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-2 advantage.

In the top of the sixth Toledo tied the game at 3-3 when Christin Stewart doubled off Oliver Perez (1-0) to score Dawel Lugo. However, the tie was short-lived as Mazzilli doubled home Fleming with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to put the RailRiders ahead for good 4-3.

Kyle Higashioka added a home run off Carpenter in the bottom of the seventh to extend the RailRiders’ lead to 5-3. The California native’s solo shot was his third round-tripper of the season. Mazzilli tacked on a two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth, his first of the year, to put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead 7-3.

Brady Lail threw two scoreless innings out of the bullpen for the RailRiders in the seventh and eighth. Cody Carroll struck out the side in a scoreless the top of the ninth to seal the victory. The four Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hurlers combined to strike out 12 batters and yielded only four hits in the contest.

Eight of the nine RailRiders batters in the starting lineup collected at least one hit in the game, with Mazzilli leading the way with his 2-for-4 effort including a double, a home run and three RBIs.

The RailRiders continue their homestand by welcoming in the Columbus Clippers Monday night to begin a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled 6:35 p.m. Josh Rogers (1-1, 4.24) heads to the mound for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Columbus has not announced a starter.
