Snuffed Out: ‘Pigs Take Series Opener 6-1
Early offense for Lehigh Valley more than enough to knock off RailRiders

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (April 27, 2018) – The offense fell behind early and any rallying momentum never materialized for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders as the Lehigh Valley IronPigs took Friday night’s contest 6-1.

Before 7,987 fans at Coca-Cola Park the IronPigs offense wore down starting pitcher Nestor Cortes in the 2nd inning. A walk, single and walk loaded the bases with no outs before Cortes struck out Joey Meneses and Nick Rickles consecutively. He lost the next batter on a 3-1 pitch to bring in a run and give the ‘Pigs a 1-0 lead.

Cortes, making his first start of the season, was still one pitch away from getting out of the jam but leadoff hitter Roman Quinn had other ideas. The switch-hitting Quinn was batting on the right side against the southpaw Cortes and went the other way with a high-and-away fastball and dropped it just over the right field wall for a grand slam. His first homer of the season made it a substantial 5-0 lead that the Lehigh Valley pitching staff wouldn’t relinquish.

For the second straight game the RailRiders had Brandon Drury rehabbing at third base. Wednesday night Drury played seven innings, but he played all nine inning Friday night. He finished 2-for-3 with a HBP and is now 4-for-7 (.571 AVG) with three runs scored and an RBI in his two games in Triple-A.

He scored the lone run of the night for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with one out in the 8th inning when Mike Ford shot a groundball up the middle past the dive of the second baseman Dean Anna. Shane Robinson went to third base on the play and is now batting .333 following his 3-for-4 performance. In his last six games played, Robinson is 10-for-27 (.370 AVG) which has raised his season average 125 points from .208.

Anyelo Gomez was activated off the Disabled List prior to Friday’s game and entered out of the bullpen to toss a scoreless 8th inning while striking out a pair. Brody Koerner was the first man out of the bullpen and the flex starter allowed one run over 5.0 innings on just 69 pitches.

After dropping Friday’s series-opener, the RailRiders hit the road to begin a three-game weekend series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled 6:35 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park. Follow along with Adam Marco and Adam Giardino for all the action on NEPA Sports Radio “The Game”, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:05 p.m.
