Stripers rally past RailRiders 8-3 to clinch series with one game to go

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (April 17, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lost 8-3 to the Gwinnett Stripers Tuesday evening at Coolray Field.  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took an early lead but could not counter the Stripers’ nine-batter sixth inning and dropped their second straight.

The RailRiders scored three times against Mike Soroka in the top of the third.  Soroka, the third-best prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization, allowed back-to-back singles by L.J. Mazzilli and Shane Robinson.  With one down, Mike Ford singled to drive in Mazzilli for the advantage.  A Billy Fleming doubled brought home Robinson and Ford for a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings.

The Stripers cut into the RailRiders lead in the fourth.  Chris Stewart singled and Ronald Acuna hit a two-run home run to left.

In the bottom of the sixth, Gwinnett scored four runs on five straight hits to take a 6-3 lead.  The first three runs were charged to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Josh Rogers.  Angelo Gomez relieved Rogers, allowed two extra-base hits to the bottom of the order and left with an injury.  Cale Coshow took over and recorded all three outs in the inning.

The Stripers added two runs in the eight to close the scoring at 8-3.

The RailRiders did not manage a hit after Fleming’s third-inning double, put four on base by walks and an error and saw the last 12 in a row retired by the Gwinnett bullpen.

Rogers (1-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs on 11 hits over five-plus innings with six strikeouts.  Evan Phillips (1-1) was the pitcher of record when the Stripers took the lead in the sixth and garnered the win.

The final game of the series and road trip is set for Wednesday at 12:05 p.m.  David Hale starts for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre against Max Fried for Gwinnett.   Follow along with all the action on The Game NEPA’s Sports Radio, online at swbrailriders.com and on the RadioBold and TuneIn Radio Apps, with coverage starting at 6:35 p.m.  The RailRiders return home on this to begin a six-game homestand against Toledo and Columbus.
