TORRES TABBED AS IL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Gleyber Torres tabbed as IL Player of the Week
Infielder honored by International League for play between April 4 and April 15

MOOSIC, PA (April 16, 2018) – The International League announced its first weekly awards earlier today and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders infielder Gleyber Torres was selected as the Player of the Week for April 5 through 15.  Torres, the top prospect in the New York Yankees organization, has helped pace the RailRiders to a 7-3 record, matching their second-best start since becoming an affiliate of the Yankees in 2007.

The infielder appeared in all ten games, batting .385 with 15 hits over 39 at-bats with one home runs and ten runs batted in.  He started nine games and was used as a pinch hitter in the tenth.  Torres was the opening day shortstop, but has also seen action at third and second.  His 22 total bases are tied for second in the league while his ten runs batted in are second behind teammate Abiatal Avelino.

The Yankees acquired Torres in 2016 from the Chicago Cubs.  He split the 2017 season between Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before suffering an injury on June 17 that forced him to miss the remainder of the season.

Torres joins Indianapolis Indians pitcher Nick Kingham as the first International League honorees this season.  Kingham was tabbed as the Pitcher of the Week after going 1-0 with an 0.82 ERA and 16 strikeouts over two stats for the Pittsburgh Pirates Triple-A affiliate.

For more information on this honor, please contact the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders front office at 570-969-2255 or visit swbrailriders.com.
