OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For April 18 - April 24, 2018)
Wisconsin bowler leads singles with first 800 of 2018 USBC Open Championships
Cotie Holbek of Burlington, Wisconsin, vaulted into the lead in Regular Singles with the first 800 series of the 2018 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships.
The 24-year-old right-hander recorded games of 278, 278 and 246 for an 802 set April 23 at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse, New York, and moved past USBC Hall of Famer Lennie Boresch Jr. of Kenosha, Wisconsin, who previously held the lead with 784.

Holbek, the scratch all-events champion at the 2017 Wisconsin State USBC Bowling Association Championships, had a chance to set the bar even higher with a 290 final game, but a 9 pin in the ninth frame and a 2-10 split he was unable to convert in the 10th frame, slowed the pace.
Holbek rounded out his sophomore USBC Open Championships campaign with a 618 series in doubles and 532 in team. He finished with a 1,952 all-events total, which is 222 pins higher than his debut in 2015.
"I still can't believe this happened, it's something I've always thought about," Holbek said. "Would I like that frame back? Of course. But, the way I look at it, is that people have to bowl. It's not easy out here. You have to make good shots, and if you miss, you pay the ultimate penalty like I did in the 10th frame."
Three bowlers celebrate participation milestones at Oncenter Convention Center
Maynard Johnson of Crystal, Minnesota, Dale Diamond of Chatham, Illinois, and Gary McGroarty of West Allis, Wisconsin, were recognized this week for their dedication to the sport of bowling and the USBC Open Championships.
Johnson became the 12th bowler in 115 years of Open Championships history to reach 65 years of participation when he took the lanes April 22.
In addition to his participation milestone, the 87-year-old right-hander also is one of 20 members of the event's 100,000-Pin Club. He entered this year's event 12th on the career pinfall list and added 1,236 pins to his total with sets of 429 in team, 428 in doubles and 379 in singles.
In 65 years at the Open Championships, Johnson has knocked down 105,512 pins for a career average of 182.2.
"Coming to the tournament has gotten to be a habit, so I'll keep coming as long as I'm able," Johnson said. "I bowled my 50th when my son bowled his first, so I think that's pretty neat. He looks after me, and it's nice to have him around."

Johnson received a plaque, chevron and custom ring to commemorate the milestone.
Diamond, 76, was recognized for his 55th tournament appearance April 22 and received a plaque, chevron and engraved watch.
McGroarty, who said he had two big goals in life - to be married for 50 years and to bowl in the Open Championships 50 times - earned a special spot in tournament history when he became the newest member of the event's 50-Year Club on April 21.
The 71-year-old right-hander, who was joined in Syracuse by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis, was the fourth of 15 competitors scheduled to reach the 50-year plateau this year.
McGroarty received a plaque, chevron and diamond lapel pin to commemorate the milestone.
New York bowler fires perfect game in Syracuse
Peter Zmozynski of Depew, New York, rolled a 300 game April 18 during his team event at the USBC Open Championships.
The 39-year-old right-hander closed the first set of his 2018 tournament campaign with the second 300, first in team competition, this year at the Oncenter Convention Center.
Zmozynski started the day with games of 236 and 209, and his career-best 745 series helped Friendly Foes Too to games of 973, 933 and 1,029 for a 2,935 total, which is just outside the top 20 in Regular Team. S&B Pro Shop 1 of Warren, Michigan, leads with 3,322.
The first perfect game of the 2018 Open Championships was rolled by USBC Hall of Famer Steve Kloempken of Pleasant View, Utah, on the way into the lead in Regular Doubles with former Team USA member David Haynes of Las Vegas.
A look ahead
Gordy Baer of Tinley Park, Illinois, is expected to become the newest member of the 100,000-Pin Club at the USBC Open Championships when he takes the lanes at the Oncenter Convention Center on April 26.
The USBC Hall of Famer will be making his 56th tournament appearance and needs 480 pins to eclipse the milestone.
Through 2017, only 20 bowlers have knocked down 100,000 or more pins at the Open Championships. Joseph Pursel Jr. of Hellertown, Pennsylvania, is scheduled to add his name to the list in June. He needs 294 pins.
