SCRANTON LOSES TO DURHAM 4-3

Durham, NC. (August 10, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lost 4-3 in ten innings to the Durham Bulls at Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Friday night.  With the bases loaded and no one out, the Bulls scored the walk-off winner on a missed catch error to take the series opener.
 
Andrew Velazquez hit a solo home run off RailRiders starting pitched Nestor Cortes to leadoff the bottom of the first.  The Bulls sent six more batters to the plate in the inning and loaded the bases, but Cortes and the defense worked out of the jam as Durham stranded three on.
 
The Bulls sent five to the plate in the second and left two more on.
 
Giovanny Urshela hit Chih-Wei Hu’s second pitch in the top of the third over the 32-foot high wall in left to tie the game at one.  Urshela hit one home run over 19 games with Toronto this season but did not have any over 39 games combined between three International League clubs prior to Friday.
 
Ryan McBroom led off the fourth with a solo home run to left-center, giving Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 2-1 advantage.  It was McBroom’s his tenth home run of the season with the RailRiders.  The first baseman/ outfielder also has hit four over 25 games with the Trenton Thunder.
 
Cortes retired the side in order in the fourth, allowed a single in the fifth and saw three batters with two strikeouts in a perfect inning.  In the seventh, Nate Lowe doubled with one on, plating Jason Coats from first to tie the game at two.  George Kontos relieved Cortes and allowed a single to put runners on the corners before inducing former RailRider Rob Refsynder into an inning-ending double play.
 
The game remained even after nine and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pushed ahead in the top of the tenth.  Mark Payton reached on a bunt single and Ian Gibaut’s throw to first was errant, allowing pace-of-play runner L.J. Mazzilli to score for a 3-2 lead.
 
In the bottom of the tenth, Lowe singled off J.P. Feyeresien to move pace-of-player runner Coats to third.  Brandon Snyder walked to load the bases.  Feyeresien walked Refsnyder to tie the game.  Nick Cuiffo hit a fly ball to left that McBroom dropped, allowing the winning run to score on an error.
 
Feyeresien (6-5) took the loss while Gibaut (4-2) garnered the win.
 
Cortes worked 6.1 innings, striking out five and walking two in the no-decision.
 
RHP Chance Adams (3-5, 4.50) is slated to start game two of this series for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday against Durham and RHP Zach Lee (3-3, 3.70).
