PONIES WIN OVER AKRON 10-1

Jannis Makes Mark in Record-Matching Start
BINGHAMTON, NY – In his 66th career Binghamton start, Mickey Jannis tossed six scoreless innings in the Rumble Ponies 10-1 win over Akron Friday at NYSEG Stadium. Tying Mark Cohoon (2010-2013) for the most starts in Binghamton franchise history, Jannis whiffed four and walked one for his third win in the last four starts. The Rumble Ponies and RubberDucks conclude their regular season series with Akron taking the advantage 10 games to three.
In a game that featured the Eastern League starter with the most hits allowed (Jannis) and most runs allowed (Sean Brady), it was the Binghamton offense that thrived in the series decider.
After three scoreless innings from both sides, the Ponies broke the 0-0 tie with one fourth-inning tally. Will Toffey led off with a single, before a two-out double from Jhoan Urena softly dropped into shallow center field, scoring Toffey from third.
Andres Gimenez helped stretch the Rumble Ponies lead in a five-run fifth inning. After J.J. Franco reached on Sam Haggerty’s throwing error, Patrick Biondi drew a walk. With two aboard, the 19-year-old Gimenez roped Brady’s offer into left field, plating both Franco and Biondi with a two-bagger. Gimenez was brought around on Tomas Nido’s single, before RubberDucks skipper Tony Mansolino took the ball from Brady and handed it to James Karinchak. The right-handed reliever issued two bases loaded free passes before picking up the final outs, ultimately ending the Ponies 10-batter rally. They scored five runs on three hits, grabbing a 6-0 lead.
Brady (5-7) lasted 4-1/3 innings after giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out one in his third battle with Binghamton this season.
Jannis (9-5) failed to go seven innings for the first time in four starts, but hemorrhaged just six hits and a walk in the winning effort. The knuckleballer has given up just two runs over his last four starts (27.1 innings).
Jhoan Urena reached base in all five of his plate appearances, aiding the Ponies in four late-inning runs. His seventh-inning walk helped spark a three-run rally, pushing the Binghamton lead to 9-1. In the eighth, he blasted his eighth home run of the season, a high-arching drive over the left-field fence.
Stephen Villines, David Roseboom, and Matt Blackham combined to throw the last three innings out of Binghamton’s bullpen to seal the series-deciding victory.
Binghamton (56-65) continues their homestand by welcoming in the Reading Fightin Phils for the first and only time this season. Friday’s series-opener features RHP Franklyn Kilome and Tyler Viza with first pitch at NYSEG Stadium scheduled for 7:05 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show starts at 6:50 PM and can be heard on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn.
