Inning Dooms B-Mets in 9-6 Loss
BINGHAMTON, NY –The
Akron RubberDucks scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning and defeated
the Binghamton Mets, 9-6, Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets outhit
the Ducks in the finale, but dropped the rubber game, suffering their first
series loss in two weeks.Eric Stamets led off the frame with a double to center. Yhoxian Medina then reached on an error calling up Clint Frazier. He hammered a double off the left center field wall, scoring Stamets and Medina. Bradley Zimmer later cranked a two-run bomb to right, giving the RubberDucks a 9-5 lead.
The B-Mets managed one run in the bottom of the ninth. Dominic Smith singled in Derrik Gibson to cut the deficit to 9-6, but they would get nothing further.
Akron took an early lead when Nellie Rodriguez led off the second inning with a bang, he crushed a solo home run to left for the first Akron run. Eric Haase then walked and later scored on a Joe Sever double, making it 2-0 RubberDucks.
The lead swelled in the third after back-to-back walks to Frazier and Bryson Myles. Frazier scored on a Zimmer groundout and later Myles scored when Rodriguez bounced out, pushing the lead to 4-0.
Binghamton fought back in the fourth as all nine men batted in the frame. Smith led off with a single and Matt Oberste doubled him to third. Victor Cruzado then legged out an infield single, scoring Smith from third. After L.J. Mazzilli walked to load the bases, Colton Plaia lofted a sacrifice fly to score Oberste. Maikis De La Cruz then reached on a fielder’s choice, driving in Cruzado to make it 4-3.
In the sixth, Mazzilli bounced a grounder to third and reached on a throwing error charged to Sever. Plaia then chopped another grounder to third and again Sever was unable to make the play. De La Cruz then bounced into a double play, scoring Mazzilli to tie the game at four.
The RubberDucks regained the lead in the seventh. Sever led off with a double and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Medina then squeaked a grounder up the middle, scoring Sever to give Akron the lead.
Binghamton tied it once again in the eighth on a Plaia single that scored Mazzilli, tying the game entering the decisive ninth inning.
Luis Mateo (1-3) allowed four runs, one earned, with four hits over two innings and took the loss. Andrew Barbosa struck out seven over six innings with four runs, three earned, allowed on three hits and four walks.
Cruzado finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Smith was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Colton Plaia went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Binghamton now will embark upon a seven-day, eight-game road trip, beginning with a three-game set in Reading against the Fightin’ Phils. RHP Tyler Pill will start Monday’s scheduled 6:35 P.M. game against Reading’s RHP John Richy. POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton lost its first rubber game of the season…The B-Mets lost the series for the first time in the past four…Dominic Smith extended his hitting streak to six games while Matt Oberste and Victor Cruzado each extended theirs to five.
