Haley,
Freiman & Mother Nature Top B-Mets, 1-0
PORTLAND, ME – The
Binghamton Mets mustered one hit off Portland starter Justin Haley and failed
to push a runner past first in a 1-0 walk-off loss to the Sea Dogs on Friday
night at Hadlock Field. Nate Freiman ripped a single off the glove of a diving
Derrik Gibson at third to plate the game-winning run and the hand the B-Mets
their seventh consecutive defeat. The nightcap of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain. The B-Mets and Sea Dogs will play a twin bill on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
Haley dazzled in his fifth career start against the B-Mets. The righty set down the first six batters he faced before Stefan Sabol singled to right to start the third. It proved to be Binghamton’s only hit of the night. The B-Mets closed the game 0-for-14 against Haley. The only other B-Mets to reach against Haley got aboard on a trio two-out walks over the final three innings.
In the fifth, the B-Mets defense opened the door for Portland before slamming it shut to preserve the scoreless game. Victor Cruzado dropped Henry Ramos’ fly ball on the left-field warning track to put two on base.
Rainel Rosario greeted reliever Luis Mateo with a tapper back to the mound. Mateo flipped home to nab Derek Miller at the plate. Freiman followed with a scorcher to third. Gibson smothered the potential run-producing hit and fired to second to end the inning. Mateo left two more runners aboard in a scoreless sixth.
Beck Wheeler was not as lucky in the seventh. The Sea Dogs put two aboard after Binghamton failed to throw out Jose Vinicio on an attempted sac bunt. With first base open, the B-Mets chose to pitch to Freiman and paid for it. Freiman ripped Wheeler’s 1-1 pitch off Gibson’s out-stretched glove to bring in Henry Ramos with the game-winning run.
Haley (3-2) struck out five over seven scoreless innings in his second career shutout. Wheeler (0-1) took the loss in Binghamton’s second walk-off defeat of the season. Andrew Barbosa went 4-1/3 innings in the no-decision.
