CALL IT A COMEBACK: SWB TAKES RUBBER GAME 8-5
Drury and Robinson lead RailRiders come-from-behind win over Clippers
MOOSIC, Pa. (April 25, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders came from behind to defeat the Columbus Clippers 7-5 on Wednesday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders trailed 4-0 after two innings, but Shane Robinson, Mike Ford and Major League rehabber Brandon Drury paced the comeback to help Scranton/Wilkes-Barre claim the series.
Columbus got on the board in the top of the first inning, opening with three consecutive doubles against Daniel Camarena to take a two-run lead before an out was recorded. With two outs Yu Chang beat out a groundball to shortstop for an infield single, plating a third tally in the frame. In the top of the second, the Clippers grew their lead to 4-0 thanks to a sacrifice fly from Yandy Diaz.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre stormed back in the bottom of the third against Stephen Fife, loading the bases with no outs. Drury lined a single to center to plate Billy Fleming with the first run of the frame, and Robinson followed with a three-run double to clear the bases. Robinson quickly stole third base and scored on a Ford groundout to give the RailRiders a 5-4 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Columbus responded with a tally when Giovanny Urshela brought home Greg Allen with an RBI single to tie the game at 5-5. Camarena was finished after 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out four.
The RailRiders took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth after Drury and Robinson led off with back-to-back singles. Ford then clubbed an opposite-field double to plate both runners and take a 7-5 lead. Robinson finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base.
Brady Lail relieved Camarena and was terrific in 2.2 innings of work, yielding just one walk and striking out six. The right-hander lowered his ERA to a spectacular 0.73 (1 ER/12.1 IP) in six outings this season and earned his third win of the season.
After the completion of the bottom of the seventh, rain was falling hard and the tarp was brought onto the field. Following a 56-minute delay, the game resumed play with Cody Carroll pitching.
SWB tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth courtesy of a two-out rally against Ben Taylor. Ryan McBroom poked a single, and Fleming followed with a ripped double to left center to extend the lead to 8-5.
Carroll struck out the side in the top of the ninth to nail down his first save of the season, striking out five in his 2.0-inning appearance.
RailRiders pitching struck out 13 batters in the game, tying a season high, while their batsmen struck for 11 hits, the fourth straight game in which the team collected double-digit hits. Drury played seven innings in his first rehab game with the RailRiders, completing 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
After an off-day Thursday, the RailRiders hit the road to begin a three-game weekend series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled 7:05 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sends Nestor Cortes (0-0, 0.00) to the bump, while Lehigh Valley counters with Cole Irvin (0-1, 5.40).
