TORRES’ 4-HIT GAME LEADS RAILRIDERS TO 5-4 VICTORY
Four-run eighth keys Scranton/Wilkes-Barre triumph

MOOSIC, Pa. (April 8, 2018) – The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders held off a late rally to defeat the Syracuse Chiefs 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. Gleyber Torres went 4-5 with two runs batted in to pace the RailRiders.

Starter David Hale was terrific in his RailRiders debut, spinning six scoreless innings while allowing just two singles, walking one and striking out one. The right-hander finished his outing by retiring seven straight batters, and 10 of his last 11. The game, however, remained scoreless into the sixth as Erick Fedde of the Chiefs was just as good in his five shutout innings.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Ryan McBroom reached on an infield single against Jaron Long. Four pitches later, Billy Fleming smoked a double to left center plating McBroom and handing the RailRiders a 1-0 lead. The Chiefs tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Chris Dominguez against reliever Giovanny Gallegos.

Mike Ford walked against Long to lead off the bottom of the eighth and scored later in the inning on a Christopher Smith wild pitch. Smith proceeded to walk Shane Robinson with the bases loaded to force home another run. Gleyber Torres broke the game open with a two-run single to give the RailRiders a 5-1 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Syracuse rallied against Cody Carroll as a walk, a hit batter and an RBI single from Moises Sierra brought in a run. Oliver Perez was summoned from the bullpen and allowed two inherited runners to score on a single and a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 5-4. Following a walk to Spencer Kieboom, JP Feyereisen entered the game and coaxed a fly out from Irving Falu to end the game.

Carroll (1-0) got the win in relief for the RailRiders, while Long (0-1) took the loss. Feyereisen earned his first save of the season.

Torres went 4-for-5 with 2 RBIs and his first stolen base of the season. Abiatal Avelino handled four chances cleanly in his first career start in the outfield. McBroom went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and now has multiple hits in two out of three games this season.

The RailRiders welcome the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to PNC Field on Monday night to begin the 2018 IronRail Trophy Series with a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. RHP Brody Koerner (first start) toes the rubber for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while RHP Drew Anderson (first start) climbs the hill for Lehigh Valley.
