GRAHAMSVILLE--Liberty Central varsity pitcher Phil Cohen said he had good control of his pitches and his no-hitter pitched against Tri-Valley in Grahamsville Wednesday afternoon verified he knew what he was talking about as the Indian's shutout the Bears 3-0.
With both teams having already earned a trip to the sectionals this non-league game ended regular season play for both teams.
Liberty and Tri-Valley now wait for the Section IX committee to set their sectional schedule which was scheduled for release last night.
Cohen, Liberty's No. 2 pitcher, in a post game interview noted, "I had command of all my pitches and the key to my success is locating my off speed pitch."
"All my pitches felt pretty good today," Cohen added.
Liberty coach David Philips gave high grades for Cohen indicating "he was in complete control." He pointed out that this is Liberty first no-hitter in a long time and was not sure when Liberty last recorded this feat.
Philips said that with this win Liberty's overall record is 12-7 and the Indians league record is 6-3 which tied them with O'Neill and Burke for the B division league championship.
"Overall I felt we were in control today with the pitching being the main factor and this team has worked hard all year with our goal being able to get into the sectionals ," Philips added.
Scoring for Liberty took place in the top of the third with singles by Robby Lyons, Andrew Philips reaching first base on a slow roller to Robert Warden, Lyons reaching second base on a pass ball and later reaching third on a ground ball, Morris Schrader hitting a single scoring Lyons and Killian Bloat hitting a single and Philips scoring on the throw.
The Indians scored their third run in the top of the fourth with a single by Brendan Siegel who then was safe on a steal attempt at second, took third on a pass ball and scored on a fly ball out to center field.
Cohen with his no-hitter recorded 9 strikeouts and issued one walk.
For Liberty Schrader went 1 for 3 with an RBI, Bloat 1 for 3 and Patrick Fitzpatrick 1 for 2.
Losing pitcher Jared Nash gave up 6 hits and issued no walks.
Tri-Valley coach John Rusin noted his team "played outstanding defense and didn't have an error in this game and our pitcher pitched well enough to win and he threw strikes and he kept us in the ball game."
Rusin indicated that a close game like this prior to the sectionals is helpful to his squad.
"You have to to tip your cap, their pitcher did an outstanding job, he mixed his spots and changed speeds and kept us off balance," Rusin added.
Tri-Valley ends the regular season with an overall record of 9-9 and 5-7 in league competition. The Bears clinched a spot in sectional play with their win Tuesday against Sullivan West.
