Bowling Highlights Column 10-29-10

Fifth Career 300 For Dean Shattuck

Monticello right-handed power bowler Dean Shattuck is a competent knowledgeable kegler and his keen savvy of lane conditions and along with his sticking with an old AMF Ultra C bowling ball produced his fifth career 300 game October 14 in the Thursday Men's league at Colonial Lanes in Chester.
Dean bowls regularly in the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes but subs three to four times a year in the Thursday league at Chester.
Dean noted that this most recent 300 was bowled with an AMF Ultra C which is over 10 years old and is believed to be a urethane bowling ball. He added that the old ball has been bringing him success lately.
His fourth career 300 was bowled December 23, 2009 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Always an advocate for the improvement of the sport of bowling and while a member of the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes Shattuck several years ago was one of the strong proponents of a shot change for this league.
Dean noted that at that time there was a need to change the oil pattern (or lane shot) because of the fact that the former easy house pattern produced averages that were not real.
"We needed a truer shot pattern", Shattuck noted at that time.
Prior to his December 23, 2009 perfect game Dean purchased a new MoRich LevRG bowling ball and he credits that ball with his fourth 300.
The October 14 scores for the 48-year-old Shattuck were 300, 229, 224, 753.
Dean's third career 300 was bowled on January 30, 2008, also in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes with scores of 300, 238, 237, 771.
His previous high series was a 792. He scored his second career 300 game on February 21, 2007 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Dean is a member of the board of directors of the Tri-County NY USBC. He maintains a 220 average in the Chester league and a 217 in the Monday league at Kiamesha Lanes.. Dean has been bowling for over 28 years.
Dean is married to Kelly and they have one daughter, Karla.
Employed as an electrician in Rockland County Dean also owns and operates his own electrical contracting business.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This weeks tip will help you execute and repeat good shots by having your body set properly so that you can use the laws of physics to roll the ball and eliminate tension in your swing.
As I've mentioned in previous columns, too much upper body and head movement make it very difficult to repeat shots.
The purpose of the stance is to place the body in an athletic position, eliminate all unnecessary movements during the approach and reduce TENSION.
Resting forearms against the body, in the stance, will help reduce tension in the upper body.
How do we do this?
Here are the four steps in the proper order for setting posture.
1. Set the feet (toward your break point).
2. Set your head (tilted over the ball).
3. Set your posterior (this is your balance point as you are swinging a heavy object).
4. Set the ball position close as noted above.
You are now in position to start a smooth approach. Maintain your body position and let the ball swing under your shoulder. You will find this easy to repeat shot after shot.
Note: Watch the PBA and note the body positions but keep in mind that your exact body position may vary to accommodate different physiology. Also, if your ball does not fit, it will be difficult to eliminate tension from your swing.

POWERHOUSE BOWLING,
PBA’S XTRA FRAME TEAM
UP FOR LOCKER
ROOM REPORT

Reports to bring viewers behind-the-scenes look from World Series of BowlingPowerhouse™ and pba.com’s Xtra Frame webcast are teaming up to bring viewers behind-the-scenes coverage from the World Series of Bowling in Las Vegas. The Powerhouse Locker Room Reports will be hosted by the newest member of pba.com’s Xtra Frame, Jaclyn Marinkovich, a.k.a. Jackie Bowling, who will be talking to players between sets while they regroup and clean equipment for the next challenge. This year, the locker rooms at all Professional Bowlers Association events will be stocked with state-of-the-art equipment produced by Ebonite International’s pro shop equipment brand, Powerhouse™. Everything a bowler — regardless of what company they bowl for — needs will be on hand provided by Powerhouse™, from resurfacing machines, drill presses, ball cleaners, polishes, etc.“Powerhouse™ is constantly stressing the importance of keeping bowling balls clean and how to properly care for them,” said Powerhouse™ Brand Manager Paul Figliomeni. “What better way to show the importance of properly maintaining your bowling equipment than to show how the pros do it.”By cleaning your bowling ball regularly, you can sustain the life and the performance of the ball. Having the right equipment on-hand at the World Series of Bowling is even more important, since the lane patterns change daily and with so many bowlers, the lanes break down quickly.“Having the Powerhouse™ Locker Room will give bowlers the variety of equipment from polishes and Abralon® pads to adjust the surface of their equipment to match up with the lane conditions.”The Powerhouse™ Locker Room Reports will be featured on Xtra Frame throughout the World Series of Bowling. Watch the Powerhouse™ Locker Room Reports at www.pba.com or on YouTube.About Ebonite International Ebonite International is a privately-owned company that services bowling centers, distributors and retail outlets domestically and internationally. DEL BALLARD JR. REJOINS EBONITE

INTERNATIONAL ON TOUR

Del Ballard Jr. rejoins ebonite international on tour.

Recent battle with tonsil cancer not keeping PBA legend off the lanes.

Despite his battle with tonsil cancer this summer, Del Ballard will once again join Ebonite International, Inc. on the Professional Bowlers Association Lumber Liquidator tour this season as the company’s tour representative. Ballard, 47, a 13-time PBA titlist in his own right, has been contracted by the bowling ball manufacturer to represent the company’s four ball brands during the PBA tour, which begins with the World Series of Bowling, Oct. 24, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.Ballard, who found out he had the rare form of cancer after returning home from Saudi Arabia with a sore throat that would not go away, is going to have his work cut out for him as Ebonite International, Inc. has expanded its pro staff.Among this expanded staff include reigning PBA Player of the Year and PBA Senior Tour Rookie of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr., 2010 PABCON All Events gold medalists Liz Johnson, Shannon Pluhowsky and Tournament of Champions winner Kelly Kulick, in addition to its staff from last year, which included Bill O’Neill, Mike Fagan, Jason Couch, Tommy Jones and Chris Barnes.Ballard’s treatments have gone well, according to his wife and Ebonite Brand Manager Ed Gallagher, who has worked with Ballard for many years.“The cancer has almost completely dissipated,” said Ballard’s wife, United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer Carolyn Dorin-Ballard. “So the prognosis is very good and his doctors are thrilled with the way his body has accepted his treatments.”Ballard has been mum on the subject of his cancer and completely focused on the upcoming World Series of Bowling, saying that the expanded Ebonite International staff shouldn’t be a problem.“I have worked with many of these guys before, so hopefully the additional players will not be a factor,” Ballard said. The PBA has changed the coaching rules this year that will allow tour reps to talk to the bowler while they are bowling, he said.“Some like to talk, some do not,” he said. “It is my job to cater to the needs of the players; however, with a large staff, I will only have a certain amount of time for each player.” Ballard still battles with a sore throat, according to Gallagher, and to be sure he does not overtax himself, Hammer Brand Manager Jeff Ussery and Track Brand Manager Paul Figliomeni are on hand during the World Series to give Ballard a hand if needed .“I really want to thank Ebonite International for giving me this opportunity,” Ballard said. Thanks are not necessary, according to Gallagher.“We are thrilled he is feeling well enough to participate in the WSOB in Las Vegas,” the brand manager said. “After his bowling days were over, Del became one of the best, if not the very best tour rep any player could ask for. He is a great coach of the physical game, lane play, ball selection and tournament strategy, and last, but certainly not least, how to cope with different players and understand how they think. He brings instant credibility, as he has been through the wars and prevailed.”In addition to the players drawing strength from Ballard’s experiences on the lane, they are now drawing strength from Ballard’s latest battle.“The players feel so much inspiration from his progress, and that does not even address the skills he possesses as the premier Tour Rep,” Gallagher said.About Ebonite International Ebonite International is a privately-owned company that services bowling centers, distributors and retail outlets domestically and internationally. PBA WORLD SERIES OF
BOWLING RECAP: DAY FOUR

MR. CONSISTENT BILL O'NEILL SURGES INTO PBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD
The PBA World Series of Bowling is a combination of a series of sprints in the middle of a marathon. While players are trying to finish in the top 16 in each of the five daily 12-game qualifying rounds on five different PBA lane conditioning patterns, the real race is to finish high in the standings after 60 games for the 2010 PBA World Championship, the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour's first major championship of the 2010-11 season.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Bill O'Neill of Southampton, Pa., has demonstrated he isn't the most talented sprinter, but he's doing great in the marathon. O'Neill hasn't won a stage yet, but he has been the most consistent player in the field of 252, advancing to next week's match play finals in the all four animal pattern championships completed thus far: 15th in the Cheetah round, eighth on the Viper pattern, seventh on the Chameleon (where he is defending champion) and 13th in the Scorpion round. That performance has landed him in the lead for the PBA World Championship after 48 of 60 games.

2110 HAMMER OUTING CHAMPIONSHIP

LIBERTY--Keith Hamlin's expressed desire to hold an outing (now called the Hammer Outing) to share the many pleasant memories of past "Friends of the Links" was honored September 25 with the admittance (induction) of Harold Reynolds, Fred Stabbert Jr., Alice Steinberg and R. D. Yaun into that beautiful course in heaven with the mystical name Valhalla Course in the land of Asgard (the highest heaven obtainable and reserved for only the most noble men and women.
The Hammer Outing September 25 was blessed with some of the most beautiful fall weather one could ever wish for and was held at the Sullivan County Country Club in Liberty.
Family members of departed golfers now admitted to the Valhalla Course spoke of memories with Bruce Reynolds saying how his father came to the game of golf at the early age of 77 years and that his dad thoroughly enjoyed the game and that he played for many more years.
Fred Stabbert III joked about how his dad and the members of his golf foursome would haggle over who won and how they would divide the winnings of their round....which only amounted to a few nickles and dimes.
Ruby Steinberg relayed how golf was a man's game until Alice took up the sport and became an avid and proficient golfer and how they enjoyed the game together.
Rick and Dan Yaun, excellent golfers in their own right, said that R.D. Yaun was one of the first golfers in the area to have his own powered golf cart and how much they enjoyed riding in it. R.D. also taught the boys that golf was a sport that could be played for a lifetime and that many great friendships were born on the links.
The the lore and traditions of the annual Hammer Outing brings tournament golf to what could easily be called a look at a mystical golf course in Heaven where there is reality and faith combined for past "Friends of the Links."
The Hammer Outing is the realization of the thoughts and words of the late Keith "Hammer" Hamlin and the combined efforts of his family and many friends.
Keith was a well-known and highly respected contractor doing business as the Hamlin Construction Co. and loved the game of golf where he achieved the nick name of "Hammer" for the way he drove the ball down the fairway.
Having just completed it's fourth year of competition, the Hammer Outing is truly fulfilling Keith's desire.
The Hammer Outing as described in the Lore and Traditions of the Hammer Outing is an outing that takes place on the fields of play "that so many of us have walked, talked, and played upon together," and "shall be an outing of joy, not remorse, an outing of brother and sisterhood, an outing to renew old friendships."
As to the "past" Friends of the Link's the Lore and Traditions of this event tell the story of the man who asked his priest to find out if there was a golf course in heaven and the priest came back to him with good and bad news by saying there was a course in heaven and it was beautiful but the bad news was the man was teeing off at 7 a.m. the next morning.
The Lore and Traditions point out that it has been left to "The Hammer" to find that beautiful course in Heaven and that the mystical course is called the Valhalla Course..
Keith, as would be expected, has a high seat on the governing board (Ting) at Valhalla and has let it be known that he has made arrangements for his past "Friends of the Links" to be admitted, as member, at this enchanting Links course.
The use of the word "Ting" comes from the fact that leaders of the villages in ancient times in the Celtic lands, The Isles, and parts of Europe held meetings to resolve issues of the day and these meetings were called (Tings) or things.
Previous departed members of the links admitted to the Valhalla Course include Richard Benton, Bertram Eisenberg, Robert Mullen, Richard Altbach, John "Jack" Coughlin, Thomas Kelly and Andrew Rorhback.
At each future Hammer Outing an additional foursome will be called to the Tee Box and honored as such and these players will be drawn from the roster of "Friends of the Links" that was established at the 1st annual Hammer Outing held October 8, 2007.
The Lore and Traditions point out that the word Asgard is described as "the highest realm in Nordic Lore, where the Gods dwell, the word Ting is the Nordic term for a council and Friends of the Links are honorable men and women who have shared the pleasure of golf together on earth.
This tournament has a unique trophy called appropriately "The Hammer Trophy" which is awarded to the champions but is immediately returned to its resting place, secured and sealed and kept in the Liberty Sullivan County Golf & Country Club Pro Shop. The trophy symbolizes the powerful nature that was Keith's. He is called by all those who knew him as a true gentleman and outstanding businessman.
The trophy presentation follows strict guidelines with the Hammer of Thor being removed from its place of stature, by a worthy representative (Keith's widow Susan Hamlin, presently performs this honor) and the trophy is presented to the chosen captain and teammates of the victorious team. The team, as one, shall hoist the Hammer skyward together and it will be held skyward until a toast, to all that have departed to play on the field of Heaven, has been offered.
The trophy is then immediately returned by the champions' captain to its resting place where it is secured and sealed, only to be removed at the next Hammer Outing.
Since the tournament is played at the nine-hole (alternating tees for the second nine) Sullivan County Golf & Country Club course, there are more players then available slots and golfers are accepted in the order their RSVP's are received.
The tournament format states that golfers submit their individual application with their current handicap and that teams are then established by the "Ting" whereby each foursome will include an A, B, C and D player based on handicaps and there are no established teams allowed to enter this tournament. The Hammer Outing is for all golfers in the Sulivan County area and is not exclusive to Sullivan County Golf & Country Club members. This tournament uses the best ball format.
The Legendary Hammer of Thor was hoisted this year by the team consisting of John Dunnigan, Mike Watson, Howard Pellman and Ronald Menges.
There are always great minds behind outstanding events like this and several of the organizers include Keith's widow Susan Hamlin, his son David Hamlin and long time friend Robert "Rat" Ratner.
Golfing friends and families with names of departed golfers and those having memorabilia can send the information to thehammer@thehammerouting.com

Here & There Column 10-26-10

Outdoor Antenna's Or PC Channels?

With continual fee disputes between television broadcasters and cable or satellite providers the only one getting hit in the pocket is you and me who just wants to see our favorite TV programs.
If the Fox-Cablevision dispute proves anything, is is that consumers are clearly not being protected. Another looming showdown between Fox parent News Corp. and Dish Network could see the channel blacked out for those subscribers too on November 1.
An interesting advertisement we read recently pushed the sale of an outdoor rotating antenna which the ad said would give TV viewers the opportunity to watch your local channels in HD with no fees and no hassles and that this antenna had a 100 mile range.
Remember back so many years ago when everyone had some form of outdoor or indoor rabbit ears and we got none of the present day fee disputes which always results in us paying higher cable or satellite rates fees.
Online Internet advertising is pushing their buttons and urging TV viewers to watch online TV on our PC's with no subscriptions or monthly fees, no hardware to install, no bandwidth limits and that there are over 3,500 channels available.
Some folks have noted that they have connected their PlayStation's HDMI cable from their laptop to their TV's and watched Internet television on their TV sets.....if this is actually a working solution and you could watch those thousands of HD-PC channels on your TV.....then cable and satellite companies could be in big trouble.
But not to worry folks.......our sometimes dysfunctional government and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is being pressured to intervene and politicians are calling for binding arbitration or keeping the TV signal on until the dispute is settled. Legislation may be introduced that would require broadcasters to keep their signals on the air during a stalemate in negotiations....most likely all this will do is provide us with continual television programming but there most likely will still be increased fees coming out of our checkbooks shortly after any settlement is agreed upon.
The bottom line here folks is that television viewers always seem to end up on the wrong end of the stick when broadcasters get greedy.... increase fees to cable or satellite providers always result in continual increases in our cable and satellite fees.

Bowling Highlights Column 10-22-10

Hall of Famer Roger Staubach

Football Icon To Speak To BPAA

The Bowling Proprietors Association of America (BPAA), the bowling industry's premier trade organization, announced last week that NFL Hall of Famer Roger Staubach will serve as keynote speaker June 29 at the 2011 International Bowl Expo at the Gaylord, Texan, in Grapevine, Texas.
The announcement was made at the East Coast Bowling Centers Convention held last week at the Trump Taz Mahal in Atlantic City, NJ
The Atlantic City convention also highlighted a year of significant accomplishments for the bowling industry. Fueled by increased interest from women and younger bowlers and the rising popularity of family entertainment centers, the industry recorded its fourth consecutive year of growth highlighted by a 2.7 percent increase in consumer participation with more than 71.1 million having bowled between March 2008 through March 2009.
The BPAA also reported that, during the same period, bowling generated a $10 billion impact on the U.S. economy.
PBA BOWLING

The groundbreaking 2010-11 Professional Bowling Association (PBA) Tour season, which makes its debut on ESPN on Sunday, Nov. 28, promises to build on those major highlights with plenty of compelling innovations. The PBA's 52nd season includes 21 original telecasts, beginning with the second annual PBA World Series of Bowling. Several firsts, such as live multi-day coverage for two major championships (PBA World Championship and U.S. Open) and the inaugural PBA Playoffs series to conclude the season, are helping the PBA redefine bowling on television in 2010-11. The signature event of the upcoming TV season is the PBA¡¦s return to ABC Sports after 14 years on Saturday, Jan. 22, for the live finals of the record-setting $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions. The Tournament of Champions telecast, which will award the richest prize ($250,000) in pro bowling history, also will be the first PBA finals aired in high-definition. Our TV season is built around capturing and delivering the drama of our major championships which shape the history of our sport,¡¨ said PBA CEO and Commissioner Fred Schreyer with a nod towards last season's most significant events and their notable champions, namely: ¡´ The storybook finish of laid off autoworker Tom Smallwood capturing the PBA World Championship. ¡´ The historic first-ever win by a woman registered by Kelly Kulick at the PBA Tournament of Champions. ¡´ The latest addition to the legendary career of 50-year-old all-time titlist Walter Ray Williams Jr. at the USBC Masters. ¡´ The glimpse into the future provided by Tour young gun Bill O'Neill at the Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open. "ESPN and ABC are once again going to be an important part of the PBA's growing history,¡¨ Schreyer said. The PBA previously aired on ABC for 36 straight years until 1997, and has been a staple on ESPN since the network's inception in 1979. ESPN also has announced a new three-year extension of its PBA coverage through 2013. Returning as the PBA¡¦s broadcast team will be play-by-play announcer Rob Stone and color analyst Randy Pedersen, a 13-time titlist on the PBA Tour. This season will be Stone¡¦s fourth and Pedersen¡¦s ninth in the broadcast booth. Every finals telecast (except the PBA Playoffs) will employ a stepladder elimination format. Each live event will bring the fans closer to the action with interaction via Facebook, plus ¡§PBA Talk Back¡¨ technology which allows glimpses into the players¡¦ minds in the heat of competition. ¡§PBA players throughout history have consistently delivered compelling storylines and our television formats produce countless pressure-filled shots every show," said PBA COO and Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark. "This season's television production will build anticipation for those moments that set bowling apart from any sport by presenting the true personalities of the best players in the world and capturing every nuance of the shots that will define their careers." Action on the lanes will begin with a 14-day World Series of Bowling and PBA World Championship at South Point Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., Oct. 25-Nov. 6. The multi-stage World Series and its deep field of 256 PBA members and international stars, will culminate with five separate five-man stepladder finals on Nov. 5 and 6, taped for delayed telecast on ESPN. The Cheetah, Viper, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championships (representing each of the PBA's primary lane oil patterns) will air on five consecutive Sundays at 1 p.m. Eastern on ESPN, starting Nov. 28. Also, a unique ¡§USA vs. The World¡¨ team competition will be the final taped telecast from the WSOB and air Sunday, Jan. 9, also at 1 p.m. Eastern. The ¡§live¡¨ portion of the television season gets underway Jan. 14-16 when the top eight PBA World Championship qualifiers ¡V based upon 60-game totals on the five PBA oil patterns contested during the qualifying rounds of the World Series ¡V return to South Point for three days of live television coverage. The eight finalists will be placed into an eight-player stepladder, with the seventh and eighth seeds meeting in the first match and the winner facing the sixth seed on Friday night's hour-long show. Saturday's one-hour telecast will find Friday's survivor facing the fifth seed, with that winner taking on No. 4. The PBA World Championship will conclude on Sunday, Jan. 16, with a four-player stepladder finale. Following the PBA World Championship, all PBA regional, senior, Women¡¦s Series and National Tour champions in PBA history are eligible to gather at Red Rock Lanes on the north side of Las Vegas for the historic $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions beginning Jan. 16, and culminating with the four-player stepladder finals televised live Saturday, Jan. 22, on ABC at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. After the TOC, the PBA exempt Tour players head to Northern California for the One A Day Earl Anthony Memorial at Earl Anthony¡¦s Dublin Bowl in Dublin, Calif., beginning Jan. 24 and featuring a five-player stepladder final on Sunday, Jan. 30, on ESPN2. The season's third major championship is back in Nevada, as the USBC Masters conducted by the National Governing Body will bring a field of amateurs and professionals together in the spacious National Bowling Stadium beginning Feb. 6. The USBC Masters¡¦ four-player stepladder finals will air live on Sunday, Feb. 13. In between the live events, the third annual Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational, named after the NBA star and avid bowler and benefitting his CP3 Foundation, will air on "Super Bowl Sunday," Feb. 6 on ESPN. In addition to Paul, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Ludacris and Hines Ward have participated in the event the past two seasons, matched up with PBA Tour stars in a doubles competition. The PBA next travels across the country for the season¡¦s fourth major championship, the 68th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open, at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J., Feb. 22-27. The U.S. Open, which features the most demanding lane conditions in bowling, will be the second event featuring three days of live TV coverage leading to the championship on ESPN on Feb. 27. Unlike the PBA World Championship's extended stepladder presentation however, the U.S. Open will feature coverage of the traditional match play rounds on Friday, Feb. 25, and Saturday, Feb. 26, leading into Sunday's four-player stepladder final. "We are particularly excited to bring the match play rounds of the U.S. Open to a national audience," Clark said. "Never before has the 'position round' been seen on TV, and anyone who has witnessed one live knows the TV audience is in for a treat. Something unpredictable will happen that night that fans have never seen before, and will be talking about long after." The third edition of the GEICO Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship follows the U.S. Open, March 1-6, at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, N.Y. This exempt Tour event finds all of the players using identical limited-technology bowling balls, this season emblazoned with the logos of the top national charities under The Bowling Foundation's umbrella. The TV season will conclude with another new addition, the Dick Weber PBA Playoffs, March 8-14 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis. PBA Playoffs qualifying is already underway in PBA Regional competition and will feature not only the top 72 players who earn seeds through performance on the National Tour, but qualifiers from Regional play that will lead to two televised bracketed regional championship rounds and an eliminator TV round. Those three 90-minute telecasts will be taped on March 14 for delayed airing on ESPN beginning Sunday, March 27, and the live bracketed finals is April 17 on ESPN, also from Woodland Bowl.
Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

The tip this week is for all bowlers but will be especially beneficial to youth and beginning bowlers.
Many bowlers worry too much about their steps and footwork, giving very little thought to their upper body position.
In the past, most new bowlers were told that you must use a four-step approach and push the ball away on the first step. This advise was generally imparted by someone with the word "COACH" lettered on their shirt. Unfortunately this advise is pure rubbish.
First of all, all bowlers have different body types, different flexibility and different lengths to their arms and legs. So how is it possible that everyone can effectively use the exact same four step approach? They can't.
If you look back at the legends of the game, did any two bowlers have exactly the same style? No.
The most important thing is to get the bowler's body in the correct position.....head over the ball with the bowling shoulder tilted to the ball side. In this way, the feet will go where they must so that you do not fall down.
The bottom line is if you are someone who works with new or youth bowlers, you must understand that everyone has different physiology so you need to help them get their body into the correct position and not focus on how many steps they take (or how these steps are taken) to get to the foul line.

The Professional Bowlers Association has announced that 13-time PBA Tour titlist Randy Pedersen, Senior Tour standout Dale Eagle and former PBA lane maintenance director Len Nicholson have been elected to the PBA Hall of Fame Class of 2011.> > All three will be inducted during ceremonies Saturday, Jan. 22 at Red Rock Resort in Las Vegas following the ABC Sports telecast of the PBA Tournament of Champions.> > Pedersen, 48, is currently the color analyst for Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour telecasts on ESPN but he earned entry into the Hall based on his accomplishments on the lanes. The Clermont, Fla., resident won the 1987 PBA National Championship for his lone major title and was ranked 35th on the PBA’s list of 50 greatest bowlers as part of the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2009. He had 34 top-five finishes in 561 Tour tournaments bowled during his career, finishing in the top 20 in earnings six times and the top 20 in average eight times.> > “When Fred (PBA Commissioner and CEO Fred Schreyer) called me with the news, I had to put the phone down and give a great big yell,” Pedersen said. “It’s very humbling and gratifying. When I first started out on tour in 1981, I never imagined something like this could happen.> > “During the journey, my first thought was winning titles and making money. I never started thinking about the Hall of Fame until I was on the downside of my career. Maybe it’s always in the back of your mind, but when I was in my heyday, the focus was always on winning.”> > Eagle, 64, is the second player elected into the Senior section of the PBA Hall of Fame, following John Handegard, who was inducted in 2009. The Frisco, Texas, resident has 11 career Senior Tour titles which ranks tied for third all-time. In 171 PBA Senior Tour tournaments he has finished in the top five 40 times. He also won 10 Senior Regional titles and three PBA Tour titles.> > “It’s something I’ve been waiting for for 47 years,” said Eagle, who is still active on the Senior Tour. “When I was a teenager I dreamed of being a great bowler. Bowling and the PBA have been my life and to be recognized as a great player has made my dream a reality.”> > Inducted into the meritorious service category, Nicholson’s career was devoted to the science of bowling lane maintenance and for more than 20 years the Tucson, Ariz., resident was the PBA Tour’s lane maintenance director. Revamped Xtra Frame Makes
Debut in Time for PBA
World Series of Bowling

Back in 2000 when former Microsoft executives Chris Peters, Rob Glaser and Mike Slade purchased the Professional Bowlers Association, one of their visions was to deliver the best in professional bowling to the world via the Internet.

That decade-old vision, introduced as PBA's Strikepass in its formation days, took a giant step forward on Oct. 18 when a new-and-improved version of PBA's Xtra Frame joined forces with NeuLion to launch the newest generation of bowling on the Internet..

The most important thing to note is that Xtra Frame will have a new Internet address: www.xtraframe.tv. The former site (pba.com/xtraframe) is no longer functioning.
KELLI BRISCOE JOINS
INTERNATIONAL BOWLING
MUSEUM/HALL OF FAME AS CURATOR

Kelli Briscoe, an avid historian with extensive museum and journalistic skills, is the new curator of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (IBM/HF).

Briscoe, who in May earned a Master of Arts degree in ancient/medieval history from Southern Methodist University, started in her new position Oct. 18.

“We are delighted to have a person with Kelli’s background and talent with us,” said IBM/HF Chairman Pat Ciniello. “She’s going to help us maintain and preserve our extensive collection while making the IBM/HF a great place to visit.”

Briscoe most recently was administrative editor for Studies in the Novel at the University of North Texas in Denton. She previously was managing editor of Travelhost, Inc., in Dallas. Immediately before that, was a researcher/writer for Dallas’ Museum Arts, Inc., and a contract curatorial assistant for Fort Worth’s American Airlines C.R. Smith Museum.

Earlier in her career she was a writer and editor for a number of Texas-based publications including managing editor of Southwest Airlines Spirit Magazine. She also was a web editor for a hospital cooperative.

“While I was working in journalism, I always had a passion for history so I went back to school to get my masters,” Briscoe said. “I didn’t know what to do with it but while I was in school I got the job at the C.R. Smith Museum putting together a timeline of the history of American Airlines. I also worked on updating the archives.

“I loved it. I realized this is what I wanted to be. Working with archives fit in well with my degree.”

After her contract ended, she worked for Museum Arts where she was involved with Denton’s African-American Museum, a Houston bible museum and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. So she was overjoyed when the IBM/HF opportunity arose.

“It was everything that I had done at the C.R. Smith Museum,” she said. “It’s great what they’ve accomplished here to get this place open. I was amazed. Now I feel I can help get everything ready for the future.”

Among Briscoe’s goals are to centralize the IBM/HF’s artifacts, create temporary exhibits and help promote the facility to families and youth both in and out of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Briscoe and her two children live in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Hurst.

Seniors Not Bored With This Election

Election day 2010 is November 2....just two weeks away and one perspective voting group is saying their vote does matter and that they are not bored with this midterm elections.
We have been out there talking with the "folks" and they are saying that the November 2 election is shaping up as one for the record books.
Older voters say they are going to vote heavy this election and that politicians are going to see what they are calling "the older Americans clout."
The majority of older voters we have had conversations with estimate that eight out of 10 voters over age 50 will cast ballots on November 2.
It's interesting to chat with some of the older voters who make it quite clear that they are mad with Congress and congressional incumbents.
Also high on the list of many of the older senior citizen voters is their anger about New York State taxes and how government in Albany is fractured and needs to be replaced.
The "senior" folks don't mince any words when they talk about their dissatisfaction with health care, Social Security, taxes and Medicare.
The 80 percent of 50 plus Americans planning to vote could determine what happens to our taxes, the fate of Social Security and who will be running Congress come January 1.
Outspoken seniors label our economy as the worst recession since the Great Depression and incumbent Washington politicians are allowing the largest tax increase in history.
One senior AARP group we sat in with during a discussion on New York State government noted the following:
1. Twenty years without a budget approved on time.....not acceptable.
2. Spending more than we have coming in.......our senior group can't live that way why should our government?
3. Take control of our government away from the 3 men in a room (governor, senate leader and speaker of the assembly) and give it back to the people.
4. It's time we do what the state of Nebraska has done, form a unicameral house (1 house instead of a state assembly and senate) who do nothing more than fight each other and the taxpayer and folks always end up losing.
The seniors we talked with surely did not show any sign of memory loss and they very well could be a major factor in the November 2 elections.

Bowling Highlights Column 10-15-10

New York Gets
1 PBA Tour Stop

The Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) 2010-2011 tour season has only two East Coast stops and New York State's Cheektowaga (Buffalo) is again back on schedule.
The AMF Thruway Lanes at Cheektowaga was knocked off the regular tour season in 2009-2010 but this year the popular center will host the Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship (formerly held on Long Island) from March 1 through Sunday March 6.
The only other East Coast PBA tour stop this season will be the return of the 68th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open to the Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, NJ from Feb. 21 through Sunday Feb. 27.

ROSTER ADJUSTMENTS ANNOUNCED FOR PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING
A series of late injury and work-related issues have resulted in several adjustments to the lineup for the PBA World Series of Bowling, which gets underway Oct. 25 at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.

Players who have withdrawn include Steve Harman, Indianapolis; Tom Hess, Urbandale, Iowa; Allan Pomatto, Goose Creek, S.C.; Ronnie Horton, Christiansburg, Va., and Yosif Fatah, Bahrain.

Replacing those players from the “first-come, first-served” waiting list are Jim Tomek Jr., Camp Hill, Pa.; Don Allen III, Vancouver, Wash.; Jerry Johnson Jr., Las Vegas; Kevin Croucher, Grants Pass, Ore., and Jeff Voght, Canojahaire, N.Y.

Harman, who has also resigned his Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exemption for the 2010-11 season due to personal reasons, will be replaced on the exempt roster by Nathan Bohr, Wichita, Kan., who was next in line on the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour points list. Bohr had already entered the World Series.

PBA REGIONAL ROUNDUP powered by Xtra Frame:
LOSCHETTER, HESS POST SECOND REGIONAL VICTORIES OF THE SEASON
Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt player Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, defeated amateur William Osborn of Muncie, Ind., 254-224, to win the PBA Central Region’s Boss Plows/Mid-States Truck Open at Do-Ri-Me Lanes in Richmond, Ind., on Oct. 10 for his second PBA Regional title of the season and the eighth of his career. He earned $2,400 along with his title.

Loschetter edged former PBA Tour exempt player Dave Traber of Hebron, Ill., 195-184, and Osborn defeated Jeff Roche of Dearborn, Mich., 246-186, in the semifinal round to set up the championship match. Seven-time PBA Tour titlist Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill., and former exempt tour players Brian Himmler of Cincinnati and Tim Mack of Indianapolis lost in the Round of 16.

In the joint PBA Midwest/Southwest Regional Barney’s Open at Enterprise Lanes in Springfield, Mo., Tom Hess of Urbandale, Iowa, defeated Marc Heninger of Tonganoxie, Kan., by 13 pins to win $2,600, his second regional title of the season and the sixth of his career. Hess finished with a 10-2 match play record and a total of 4,629 pins for 20 games, including match play bonus pins. Heninger was 6-4-2 in match play and finished with 4,616 pins.

A pair of non-members won in the PBA East and West Regions. Jimmy Plessinger of York, Pa., defeated Tommy Gollick of Oberlin, Pa., 256-200, to win the East Region Leisure Lanes Open and $2,500 in Lancaster, Pa. Plessinger, a PBA member from 2004-07, was bowling in his third regional event this season as a non-member, but he won’t be credited with a PBA title because of his amateur status.

Likewise, 18-year-old amateur Lanndy Carnate of Glendale, Ariz., was a winner in the PBA West TKR Open at Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson, Ariz., on Oct. 10, but his 265-205 victory over two-time PBA Tour winner Michael Haugen Jr. of Carefree, Ariz., doesn’t count as a PBA title. Carnate won $2,400.

Carnate defeated former exempt tour competitor Dave Wodka, Chatsworth, Calif., 247-215, and Haugen edged another former exempt tour player, Ben Laughlin of Phoenix, 225-206, in the semifinal round.

On the schedule for the Oct. 15-17 weekend are regional events in the East Region at Varsity Lanes in Bowling Green, Ohio; in the Midwest at Maple Lanes in Waterloo, Iowa; in the South at NAS Freedom Lanes in Jacksonville, Fla., and a doubles event in the Northwest at Stardust Lanes in Walla Walla, Wash., as the two-month chase for eight additional PBA Playoffs qualifying positions in six regional areas continues. Qualifying tournaments in the PBA East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and combined West/Northwest Regions will continue through Nov. 30.

WOMEN’S PRO BOWLING TO
BE HONORED AT ARLINGTON’S
BOWLING MUSEUM AND HALL OF FAME

The new International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (IBM/HF) is proud to announce that it will be adding a new exhibit to the museum which pays tribute to the history of women’s professional bowling. The exhibit will be unveiled during the International Bowl Expo and USBC Convention, which will be held, in Arlington, TX during the last week in June 2011.

“We are so excited about Bowl Expo, as well as the USBC convention, coming to Arlington, Texas. Those who attend this first-ever-event will get a first-hand look at the IBM/HF, International Training and Research Center, as well as the offices of the International Bowling Campus,” stated IBM/HF chairman Pat Ciniello. He went on to add, “The new exhibit will display rare photographs and artifacts – from those who made professional women’s bowling a reality, to the great women bowlers who competed on tour.”
A committee has been formed to develop the contents of the exhibit, as well as to raise funds in order to build it. Jim Goodwin, President of the Bowling News Network and publisher of Stars & Strikes Bowling Newsmagazine has been named chairman. Goodwin worked with the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour and the Professional Women’s Bowling Association for 20 years. Public relations expert Joan Romeo, owner of The Marketing Team agency, will be handling the fund-raising and promotions aspect of the project. Joan’s two daughters, Robin and Tori, are former pro tour players. Robin is in the PWBA and USBC Halls of Fame.
Former LPBT & PWBA Tour Director and Historian Fran Deken will be an invaluable member of the team in recording the history and making sure all the right people are honored. Former PWBA owner and museum trustee John Sommer, who operated and financed the LPBT and PWBA for 22 years from 1981-2003, will contribute his time, effort, and expertise to the project. Deken and Sommer are also members of the PWBA and USBC Halls of Fame.
50 Years of Women’s Pro Bowling will occupy a prominent place within the new museum, and become a permanent part of bowling’s incredible history for all visitors to explore year round. The IBM/HF occupies 18,000 square feet of the International Bowling Campus, which is also the home for the United States Bowling Congress, the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America, the International Training and Research Center, and many more related organizations that make up bowling’s headquarters.

Ebonite’s new Game
On goes distance

Come early November, when the weather starts to become crisp and the leaves begin to change into the warm jewel-toned colors of fall, Ebonite bowling will introduce its newest mid-performance bowling ball, Game On.The Game On is a follow-up to the brand’s Game Plan and will be the receiver every football coach dreams of: one who can go 110 yards untouched every time into the end zone. The Game On will give bowlers length down the lane with strong backend performance on light to medium-oiled lanes.“The Game On is a great addition to the Ebonite product line,” Ebonite Brand Manager Ed Gallagher said. “The Game On exhibits motion that we need, a ball that is very clean through the front part of the lane, and has great backend reaction.”The 15 pound Game On has an RG rating of 2.51, a differential rating of 0.058, an intermediate differential of 0.001 which is a very low mass bias. When it comes time to add to your offensive line this fall, be sure to put Ebonite’s Game On on your roster. The Game On will be released world-wide Nov. 9, 2010.— Ebonite Bowling Balls & Bowling Equipment - Ebonite is a brand of Ebonite International, Inc.
