New leaders emerge in Emerald Singles, Doubles at 2019 USBC Women’s Championships
Heather Mooney of Anaheim, California, rolled the best game (268) and series (677) of her career to take the Emerald Singles lead at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships, and Katherine Green of Nampa, Idaho, and Vicki Harris of Mira Loma, California, combined for a 1,152 score to secure the lead in Emerald Doubles.
Mooney rolled games of 188, 268 and 221 for a 677 series on June 23 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kansas, to take the top spot from Sheila Bussler of Brownton, Minnesota, who had held the lead since April 26 with 622.
Mooney also rolled sets of 547 in team and 483 in doubles to move into second place in Emerald All-Events with a 1,707 total. Jennifer Henn of Norfolk, Nebraska, leads with 1,751.
Mooney entered the 2019 event as a substitute and is eager to see if her score will hold up.
“This is amazing,” Mooney said. “I’m shocked that I bowled this well, and it made for a really good time. I’m shaking because I’m so excited, but this is huge for me knowing I have a chance to be part of history.”
In Emerald Doubles, Harris had games of 198, 240 and 181 for a 619 series, and Green added 192, 181 and 160 for a 533 set to take the lead June 22 with a 1,152 total. Sonjia Shoemaker of Battle Ground, Washington, and Debie Watkins of Vancouver, Washington, previously led with 1,118.
The pair noticed the display of last year's champions on one of the video monitors at Northrock Lanes and wondered what it would be like to see their names alongside the winning score. They hope to experience that feeling at the 2020 USBC Women's Championships in Las Vegas.
“This genuinely is beyond my wildest dreams,” Green said. “We looked up at the screens, seeing the pictures of last year's champions, and we kept joking about how cool it would be for us to see ourselves on the screens next year as defending champions. We're just two regular people, and that's why bowling the Women's Championships is great.”
Emerald Singles and All-Events consists of bowlers with entering averages of 160-174, while Emerald Doubles includes bowlers with combined entering averages of 320-349.
Texas pair takes Topaz lead
Ronda Conley of Mullin, Texas, and Norma Tucker of Cross Plains, Texas, teamed to claim the Topaz Doubles lead at the 2019 USBC Women’s Championships on June 21.
The pair posted a 907 total to surpass Teah Colvin of Riverton, Nebraska, and Mary Sawyer of Burr Oak, Kansas, who held the top spot with 874.
Conley led the effort with games of 150, 201 and 135 for a 486 series, and Tucker added 135, 150 and 136 for a 421 series.
Topaz Doubles consists of bowlers with combined entering averages of 259 and below.
A look ahead
The 100th edition of the USBC Women’s Championships will conclude its run in Wichita on June 30.
The 2019 event kicked off April 20 and lasted for 72 days. The USBC Queens also was held at Northrock Lanes in 2019, taking place May 15-21.
