OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For June 5 - June 11, 2019)
Two bowlers reach milestones at 2019 USBC Open Championships
Jamie Brooks of McKinney, Texas, and Jerry Beavers of Oklahoma City each celebrated milestones this week at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships, where they reached 60 and 50 years of participation, respectively.
Brooks made his memorable march to the lanes at the South Point Bowling Plaza on June 5, making him the second bowler this year, and 27th in tournament history, to reach the 60-year mark.
His nine-game performance now has him on the verge of adding his name to the short list of bowlers who have toppled 100,000 pins at the USBC Open Championships.
The 84-year-old right-hander received a chevron, plaque and engraved money clip to commemorate his entrance into the 60-Year Club, and he's now 381 pins away from claiming the coveted crystal pin awarded to members of the 100,000-Pin Club.
Brooks entered the 2019 event needing 1,860 pins to reach the plateau and rolled consistent sets of 498 in doubles, 493 in singles and 488 in team for a 1,479 all-events total. His career pinfall stands at 99,619.
Beavers took the lanes June 7 and is one of 23 bowlers scheduled to compete for the 50th time during the 2019 event in Las Vegas.
For his accomplishment, the 77-year-old right-hander received a chevron, plaque and diamond lapel pin prior to the start of his team event.
He started bowling in 1964, when his friend, whom he worked with at the post office, asked him to join his league. His friend was Glenn Cox, a fellow member of the 50-Year Club, who added his own name to the list just 10 days before Beavers.
Beavers finished his 2019 Open Championships campaign with sets of 516 in doubles, 505 in singles and 485 in team for a 1,506 all-events total. In 50 years on the championship lanes, he has knocked down 83,813 pins for a 188.7 career average.
Georgia bowler rolls perfect game at South Point Bowling Plaza
Jason Vantroost of Oakwood, Georgia, rolled the 10th perfect game of the 2019 USBC Open Championships.
The 300 came in his first game of singles June 11 at the South Point Bowling Plaza, and he followed it with games of 183 and 255 for a 738 series. Mitch Beasley of Clarksville, Tennessee, leads Regular Singles this year with 812.
Vantroost, a 36-year-old right-hander, added sets of 537 in doubles and 506 in team for a 1,781 all-events total. This year's tournament marked his second Open Championships appearance. His debut came last year in Syracuse, New York.
Missouri first-timer leads Standard Singles in Las Vegas
Despite being a first-time participant at the USBC Open Championships, Cody Morrow of Eugene, Missouri, appeared calm and experienced in a moment many bowlers dream of when taking the lanes on the biggest stage in bowling.
The 32-year-old right-hander stepped up and delivered in his final frame of singles June 4 at the South Point Bowling Plaza, filling 20 pins to secure the lead in the Standard Division with a 690 series.
Morrow improved from one event to the next in his Open Championships debut and started singles with games of 248 and 216, meaning he'd need another 216 game to match Don Erickson of Renton, Washington, who previously topped the Standard Singles standings with 680.
Six consecutive strikes in the middle of the finale put Morrow in position for a run at the lead, before a missed single pin set the stage for his dramatic 10th frame. He rolled a 10 pin for a strike on the first shot of his final frame and then spared a 9 pin to finish his leading set with a 226 game.
Morrow's debut also included sets of 537 in doubles and 417 in team for a 1,644 all-events total.
The Standard Division is for bowlers with entering averages of 156-175.
Michigan bowler shoots 300, takes lead at 2019 Bowlers Journal Championships
After missing the cut to match play at the 2019 USBC Senior Masters, Michael Calvin of Warren, Michigan, made his way across town to bowl a squad at the 2019 Bowlers Journal Championships presented by USBC, where he hoped to end his week on a high note.
Using a subtle change in his hand position that helped him finish his Senior Masters experience with two big games, Calvin rolled the sixth 300 of the 2019 Bowlers Journal Championships at the South Point Bowling Center.
He followed the perfect effort Wednesday with games of 246 and 202 for a 748 series, propelling him to the top of the Senior Singles leaderboard. Jeff Richgels of Oregon, Wisconsin, previously held the lead with a 709 series.
The Bowlers Journal Championships is in its 73rd year as the premier side event at the USBC Open Championships, which is being held at the nearby South Point Bowling Plaza. Both the Bowlers Journal Championships and Open Championships kicked off in March and will conclude during the first week of July.
A look ahead
Two more bowlers will reach milestones this week at the USBC Open Championships.
Leo Plaia of River Ridge, Louisiana, and Mike Putzer of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, will become the newest members of the 50-Year Club on June 12 and June 14, respectively.
They are two of 23 bowlers scheduled to reach the milestone this year in Las Vegas.
