PBA stars Anthony Simonsen, Kyle Troup, Jakob Butturff and team captain Chris Barnes successfully defended the Weber Cup against a quartet of European PBA stars – Osku Palermaa, Jesper Svensson, Stuart Williams and captain Dom Barrett – in the 20th anniversary of the Ryder-Cup-style bowling event, but the first held on American soil.
Simonsen’s 287-278 win over Williams in the 32nd match finished off the 18-14 win by the U.S. One point was awarded in each singles, doubles and Baker team match bowled using the World Bowling “current frame” scoring system. The U.S. win evened the series at 10-10. The invitational event will return to Europe in 2020.
The Weber Cup was conducted over a span of four days on a single lane in a stadium-style setting at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
JAKOB BUTTURFF, LIZ JOHNSON TOP 2019 WORLD BOWLING TOUR POINTS LISTS
Points are earned in designated World Bowling Tour events held around the world. Seven additional events are on the men’s schedule in 2019 while women have eight more events, including this week’s U.S. Women’s Open.
Butturff heads the men’s qualifying list with 1,080 points, followed by PBA Tour rookie Mykel Holliman of Collierville, Tenn. (636 points); defending WBT Men’s Finals winner Jason Belmonte of Australia (600); Mitch Hupé of Canada (468) and AJ Chapman of Manchester, Iowa (444). The women’s top five are Johnson (1,224); Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, N.Y. (928); Tannya Roumimper of Indonesia (720); and Clara Guerrero of Colombia (696). Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, Calif., and Dasha Kovalova of Ukraine are tied for fifth with 600 points each.
Corey Umbrello of Westminster, Mass. rolled a clutch double in the 10th frame to defeat Ryan Graywacz of Canastota, N.Y., 227-224, to win the PBA Homefield Bowl Eastern Open presented by MOTIV in Yonkers, N.Y., Sunday.
Umbrello, who qualified first for the stepladder finals by 65 pins over Graywacz, opened in the ninth frame to give Graywacz an opportunity to close him out. But after throwing strikes in the ninth and 10th frames, Graywacz failed to throw the clinching third strike in a row and Umbrello then doubled to secure his first PBA title and the $3,000 first place prize.
Graywacz almost missed the stepladder finals, but defeated Michael Markis of Scranton, Pa., in a one-game roll-off, 206-176, to make it into the four-man finals. Graywacz, who also was looking for his first PBA title, then defeated Jonathan Van Hees of Charlestown, R.I., 213-190, and defending champion Anthony Pepe of Elmhurst, N.Y., 201-189, to advance to the championship match.
• John Janawicz of Winter Haven, Fla., defeated Kristijonas Sergejevas of Lithuania, 235-196, Sunday to win the fourth annual PBA Timmy See Memorial South Open presented by MOTIV at BreakPoint Alley in Tavares, Fla.
Janawicz, a 2018 USBC Hall of Fame inductee, qualified in the top position for the stepladder finals with a 17-game pinfall total of 4,238, and easily won the championship match after starting with four strikes while Sergejevas opened in the third frame and failed to throw consecutive strikes until the eighth and ninth frames.
In the opening match Anthony DeStasio of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., defeated Shawn Naumann of Orlando, Fla., 248-235. Sergejevas then defeated DeStasio, 257-224, to advance to the final match.
Janawicz earned $2,300 for the win but doesn’t get credit for a PBA title because he is not a PBA member.

Closing the extended holiday weekend July 5-7 will be the PBA50 Greater Freeport Midwest/Central Open at 4 Seasons Bowl in Freeport, Ill.; the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort Southwest Doubles presented by DV8 at FireLake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Okla., and the PBA/PBA50 Vanessa Brown Homes West Open doubleheader presented by Track at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto, Calif.
• How did PBA Hall of Famer Nelson Burton Jr. spend his 77th birthday on June 6? He bowled as a sub in the Wednesday Handicap Singles league at Stuart Bowl in Stuart, Fla., and rolled games of 279, 290 and 269 for an 838 series. He then added a 248 for a four-game series of 1,086 for a 271.5 average.
