Binghamton Grabs Both Ends of Twin Bill

BINGHAMTON, NY – For the first time in seven tries this season, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies completed a doubleheader sweep. On Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium, the Rumble Ponies beat the Fisher Cats, 4-2 in game one, before taking the nightcap, 5-1. The pair of victories puts Binghamton six games over .500 for the first time this season. 

Game 1 – Rumble Ponies 4, Fisher Cats 2

Nabil Crismatt became the first Rumble Pony to toss a complete game this season, limiting the Fisher Cats to just two runs in his seven frames. Crismatt’s (7-2) only blemish came in the fourth inning, already ahead 2-0. He coughed up Gunnar Heidt’s first home run of the season, a two-run shot to briefly tie the score at 2-2.

Tim Tebow’s RBI single in the fourth inning pushed the Ponies in front for the remainder of game one. His knock helped push starter Randy Pondler out of the game.

Pondler (0-1) lasted 3-2/3 innings in his Double-A debut, striking out two with three walks. 

Crismatt would retire the final eight Fisher Cats and send Binghamton to a 4-2 game one victory.

Game 2 –Rumble Ponies 5, Rumble Ponies 1

A second-inning two-out rally was all the Rumble Ponies needed in the nightcap, behind the arms of five Binghamton relivers. 

With Corey Taylor starting the game, the Ponies flooded him with offensive support in the second frame. After a two single from John Mora, Joey Wong walked. With two aboard, Levi Michael singled to load the bases for Jeff McNeil. The Ponies second baseman sent Josh DeGraaf’s pitch over the right-field fence for Binghamton’s first grand slam of the 2018 season. 

DeGraaf (1-2) would hit Peter Alonso with the first pitch following the grand slam, igniting a series of ejections. DeGraaf and manager John Schneider were tossed by home plate umpire Chris Marco.

With two outs in the top of the third, Tyler Bashlor sailed an 0-2 pitch over Bo Bichette’s head. That resulted in the ejections of both Bashlor and Luis Rojas.

Ryder Ryan (1-0) tossed 1-2/3 scoreless innings in his NYSEG Stadium debut, before giving way to Joshua Torres.

Binghamton (31-25) embarks on a weeklong road trip beginning Tuesday at Harrisburg. First pitch at FNB Field is scheduled for 6:30, while The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show starts at 6:20 PM and can be heard on NewsRadio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn.

Crismatt Named League Pitcher of the Week

BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton Rumble Ponies starter Nabil Crismatt has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. In two starts from May 28 through June 3, Crismatt earned a pair of wins and compiled a 1.26 ERA over 14-1/3 innings. He tossed 7-1/3 innings of one-run ball against the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday before going the distance in a seven-inning complete game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday.

Crismatt is the third Rumble Pony to take home a weekly league honor this season. Peter Alonso and Jeff McNeil were previously recognized as Players of the Week..

The Rumble Ponies (31-25) open a three-game series on the road against the Harrisburg Senators on Tuesday at 6:30 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pregame show starts at 6:15 PM and can be heard on NewsRadio 1290 AM and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies channel on TuneIn.

Ryan Ciminelli Again Paces PBA Xtra Frame Greater Jonesboro Open Qualifiers

Defending champion Francois Lavoie sits in third heading into Sunday’s cashers round

JONESBORO, Ark. (June 2, 2018) – For the second year in a row, Ryan Ciminelli of Clarence, N.Y., led qualifiers in the PBA Xtra Frame Greater Jonesboro Open at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center into Sunday’s cashers round, averaging 225.75 for Saturday’s first eight games.

Ciminelli, a 32-year-old lefthander and seven-time PBA Tour title winner, rolled games of 253, 209, 190, 215, 233, 243, 228 and 235 for a 1,806 pinfall total, taking the qualifying lead in the final game by 12 pins over amateur Mykel Holliman of Collierville, Tenn. Defending Jonesboro champion Francois Lavoie of Canada was third with 1,782 pins as the top 35 top qualifiers advanced to Sunday’s five-game cashers round.

Lavoie defeated Ciminelli, 224-152, to win the 2017 Greater Jonesboro Open title.

The top 35 qualifiers will bowl in Sunday’s five-game cashers round at 8:30 a.m. The top 16 after 13 games will bowl an eight-game match play round at noon, and the top four after 21 games will compete in the stepladder finals Sunday at 3:45 p.m. All times are Central. All of Sunday’s action will be streamed live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel. INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 2, 2018) –  The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre lost 8-0 to the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field Saturday night.  Clay Holmes pitched seven shutout innings, limiting the RailRiders to six hits over seven shutout innings, striking out eight.

Indianapolis took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starting pitcher Justus Sheffield.  Kevin Newman doubled and Max Moroff walked.  With two down, Jacob Stallings plated both with a broken-bat single.  After an Eric Wood single, Kevin Kramer’s sixth home run of the year, 371 feet to right-center, pushed the Indians lead to 5-0.

Sheffield (0-2) settled in from the second through the fifth, walking one and retiring 11 straight to close his outing before walking the final batter he faced.

In the sixth, Sheffield walked the leadoff batter and was lifted.  Reliever Brady Lail allowed three consecutive singles, including a RBI knock by Kramer to extend the edge to 6-0.  Indianapolis added one more run on a double play for a 7-0 lead.  The Indians added a run on a sac fly in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Clay Holmes (3-3) earned the victory and was backed up by scoreless innings from Josh Smoker and Johnny Hellweg.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s Brandon Drury singled in the fourth to extend his on-base streak to 25 straight games.

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre concludes their six-game road trip on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m.  Josh Rogers (5-3, 2.48) will start for the RailRiders against Tyler Eppler (4-2, 3.14) and the Indians.  Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is back at PNC Field on Tuesday, June 5, to begin a 10-game, nine-day homestand against Durham, Louisville and Rochester.  Tickets are available online at swbrailriders.com

McNeil’s Walk Off Highlights Twin Bill Split

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Rumble Ponies topped the Fisher Cats, 6-5, before dropping the nightcap 3-0, Saturday at NYSEG Stadium. Jeff McNeil finished off Binghamton’s two-out seventh-inning rally in game one, before New Hampshire starting pitcher T.J. Zeuch stole the show in game two. Binghamton and New Hampshire have split their 16 meetings this season.

Game 1 – Rumble Ponies 6, Fisher Cats 5

Trailing 5-4 entering the ninth inning, the Ponies completed a comeback by having four straight batters reach with two outs. After Kevin Taylor and Jhoan Urena popped out to begin the frame, Matt Oberste pinch hit for John Mora, drawing a two-out walk. Following a Levi Michael single, Joey Wong drew a walk against Kirby Snead, allowing McNeil to the plate with the bases loaded. His seeing-eye single through the left side plated a pair, sending Binghamton to a 6-5 walk-off win.

New Hampshire was first on the board in game one, scoring two runs off of Josh Prevost in his Double-A debut. The 6-foot-7 right-hander settled in, though, tossing 4.2 innings of three-run baseball in his first-ever Eastern League start.

Fisher Cats starter Jordan Romano had his nine-start winning streak snapped with a no decision. He lasted five innings, allowing four runs (two earned) with four strikeouts.

Joshua Torres (5-0) helped preserve Binghamton’s one-run deficit by tossing 1-1/3 scoreless innings. 

Snead (2-2) recorded only two outs before giving up the game-winning hit.

Game 2 –Fisher Cats 3, Rumble Ponies 0

New Hampshire wasted no time getting on the scoreboard again, doing so in the opening frame. After Jonathan Davis started the game with a single, Bo Bichette followed by doubling, giving the Fisher Cats a quick 1-0 edge. Bichette was thrown out at third attempting to stretch his double into a triple. 

The Fisher Cats continued to batter Marcos Molina, scoring twice more in the fourth inning. Connor Panas made it 2-0 by singling home Harold Ramirez, before Parker Cantwell’s sacrifice fly scored Juan Kelly from third to make it 3-0.

Molina (1-5) coughed up three earned runs in his 4-1/3 frames, walking five with just one strikeout

The three runs proved plenty for T.J. Zeuch. In just his sixth Double-A start, the 22-year-old tossed a seven-inning complete game, allowing just three hits with four strikeouts. After the first inning, Zeuch (3-2) did not allow more than one baserunner to reach in any frame.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (June 1, 2018) –  The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre shutout the Indianapolis Indians 4-0 at Victory Field on Friday evening.  Chance Adams struck out seven over five and two-thirds and Mike Ford drove in a pair to back the starter in the series opener.

In the top of the first, Clint Frazier scored on a two-out single from Ford off Indians starting pitcher J.T. Brubaker.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre added a pair of runs in the fifth against Brubaker with Ford doubling in Frazier and Kyle Higashioka providing run-scoring single, plating Brandon Drury, to give the RailRiders a 3-0 lead.

Billy McKinney led off the top of the eighth with a solo home run off Dovydas Neverauskas.  It was McKinney’s third home run over the last four games and extended the advantage to 4-0.

Adams (2-2) allowed a single in the first, third and two more in the fifth, but only faced three batters with a runner in scoring position.  Cale Coshow and Cody Carroll completed the shutout bid; the fourth this season by the RailRiders and second on this road trip.  Brubaker (2-2) allowed the first three runs and took the loss; the sixth straight for Indianapolis.

Drury, Ford and Higashioka collected six of the nine hits in the game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Drury extended his on-base streak to 24 consecutive games.

Game two of this series is scheduled for Saturday at 7:05 p.m.  Justus Sheffield (0-1, 1.65) will start for the RailRiders against the Indians and Clay Holmes (2-3, 5.05).

NHRA DRIVERS ENJOY AN AFTERNOON OF BOWLING WITH SEAN RASH

Known for piloting their top fuel dragsters and funny cars at more than 300 mph in National Hot Rod Association competition, Kalitta Motorsports drivers JR Todd, Richie Crampton and Shawn Langdon also have been known to get their competitive juices flowing as avid league bowlers.

The three NHRA stars, who will be competing this weekend in the JEGS Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., spent Thursday afternoon with 12-time PBA Tour winner Sean Rash at Parkside Lanes in Aurora, Ill., getting a few tips from the former PBA Player of the Year in hopes of improving their games.

All three drivers bowl in a “Racers” league for drivers and crew members at Brownsburg Bowl in Brownsburg, Ind., where several NHRA teams are based, during the off season.

“I grew up a block away from Durbin Lanes in Lawrenceburg, Ind., so it was only natural to hang out there,” said the 36-year-old Todd who holds a 180 average. “At first I went there to play the video games but then I thought I should give bowling a try. After a while I really got into it and eventually joined a junior league and was in a junior travelling league when I was in high school.  It was a lot of fun so I’ve stayed with it ever since.

“I’m definitely into it (bowling),” he added. “I catch it on TV whenever I can.”

Todd must have been a quick learner as he proceeded to post games of 217 and 220 during an informal match between the three drivers and Rash.

“When I found out about us being able to bowl with Sean I was pumped about it,” Todd added. “You don’t want to miss an opportunity to get some tips from one of the best in the sport.”

Rash also had admiration for the drivers. 

“I’ve had quite a few 300 games in my career,” said Rash, who is the only player to bowl two 300 games in televised PBA Tour finals. “But I wouldn’t mind going 300 mph like these guys do one day.”

Also on hand was FOX NHRA pit reporter Amanda Busick who was taping a bowling feature for the FOX telecast of the Route 66 Nationals this weekend. PBA will join NHRA as part of the sports lineup on the FOX family of sports networks in 2019.

The bowling feature is scheduled to air on FS1’s Route 66 Nationals coverage Sunday between 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. ET.

So far this season Todd has won twice in NHRA’s funny car division and Crampton has one win in top fuel.

WES MALOTT’S SANTE FE HIGH SCHOOL FUND-RAISER TOPS ITS GOAL

Ten-time PBA Tour champion Wes Malott set out to raise $5,000 to benefit the families’ of victims of the recent high school shooting tragedy in Santa Fe, Texas, and as word got out to the bowling community, help came in from all directions in the form of product donations from bowling product manufacturers, signed merchandise from his fellow PBA competitors and, most important, cash.

Malott held a raffle drawing during his annual Malott’s All-Stars Youth Championships tournament over the weekend in Austin, Texas, awarding prizes to multiple winners during a Facebook Live event, and announced his fundraiser had surpassed $8,000.

PBA REGIONAL UPDATE: CHRIS WARREN TIES FOR OVERALL REGIONAL TITLES LEAD

Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., defeated Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio, 267-256, in the PBA50 Vanessa Brown Homes West Open Sunday at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto, Calif., to tieDale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., for the all-time lead in overall PBA Regional titles won.

Warren, 54, won his fifth PBA50 Regional title to go with 47 standard regional titles to bring his overall titles total to 52, moving into a tie with Traber who has 39 standard and 13 PBA50 regional wins. Both are one ahead of PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, who has 51 titles. Warren also picked up a $1,500 first prize.

In the PBA50 semifinal round, Warren eliminated Craig Miller of Tracy, Calif., 241-186, and Kretzer defeated Ty Dawson of Sunnyvale, Calif., 236-181.

In the standard regional as part of the weekend, 40-year-old Warren Crawford of McKinleyville, Calif., in his first year of PBA membership, defeated Wayne Garber of Modesto, 245-214, to win the Vanessa Brown Homes West Open, presented by Track. In addition to the $2,000 first prize, Crawford picked up his first PBA Regional title.

Crawford defeated Scott Boyle of Salida, Calif., 229-180, in the semifinal round while Garber advanced to the title match by defeating Russ Oviatt of Chandler, Ariz., 236-227.

● Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill., defeated Dave Beres of Waukesha, Wis., 185-165, to win his 43rd PBA Regional title in the PBA Celeste Walker Midwest Open, presented by American Family Insurance, at Strike N Spare II in Lockport, Ill., Saturday.

The title was Jaros’ first since 2010 and earned him a $1,800 first prize. Despite the lengthy gap between titles, the mostly-retired Jaros still ranks third on the all-time standard PBA Regional titles list behind leader Chris Warren (47) and Pete Weber (46).

Jaros defeated amateur Kyle Anderson of Lockport, 254-213 and Beres edged Anthony LaCaze of Elgin, Ill., 244-181, in the semifinal round to set up the championship match.

● Brent Tishuk of Belvidere, N.J., defeated Adam Chase of North Babylon, N.Y., 221-180, to win his first PBA title in the PBA Colony Park Lanes Eastern Challenge in York, Pa., on Saturday. PBA Challenge events are open to any member or non-member who has never won a PBA event.

Tishuk, a second-year member, had not finished higher than fourth place in PBA competition prior to this event. He was nursed his way through a muscle pull sustained earlier in the day to defeat Chase, an eight-year member who had two career runner-up finishes prior to this event. Tishuk earned $1,500.

● Kicking off the June PBA Regional calendar over the June 8-10 weekend will be the PBA Tumwater Northwest Open presented by DV8 at Tumwater Lanes in Tumwater, Wash., and the one-day, reduced entry fee Elkhart Central/Midwest Open presented by 900 Global on June 10 at Country Club Lanes in Elkhart, Ind.

● The June 15-17 PBA Regional calendar includes the Timmy See Memorial Tavares South Open presented by MOTIV at Break Point Alley in Tavares, Fla.

● PBA Regional activity over the June 22-24 weekend will be the Homefield Bowl Eastern Open presented by MOTIV in Yonkers, N.Y.; the Pro Bowl West Central/Midwest Challenge presented by Storm in Fort Wayne, Ind., and the Grand Casino Hotel & Resort Southwest Doubles at FireLake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Okla.

● Facebook fans can now add a PBA-themed frame to photos, thanks to a new feature added by PBA. Three Facebook photo frame options are available.
