WORLD BOWLING TOUR LEADERS RETAIN THEIR POSITIONS AFTER THAILAND
The three leading men and three women in World Bowling Tour competition points retained their positions after the PBA-WBT Thailand Open. Two events remain on the WBT schedule heading into the WBT Men’s and Women’s Finals in Kuwait on Thursday, Nov. 7.
Based on points earned in 2019 WBT events, Jakob Butturff (1,240 points), AJ Johnson (1,088) and Kyle Sherman (1,076) lead the men’s competition with Mitch Hupé (960) and Kris Prather (952) in fourth and fifth places, respectively. Danielle McEwan (2,192), Liz Johnson (2,084) and Tannya Roumimper (1,720) lead the women’s standings followed by Clara Guerrero (1,248) and Marie Jose Rodriguez (1,184).
In addition to the points leaders, World Bowling’s Asian, European and Pan American zones will each invite one man and one woman to bowl in the WBT Finals following the PBA-WBT Kuwait Open, Oct. 31-Nov. 6, at Kuwait Bowling Center in Kuwait City. The Kuwait Open is the final WBT Finals qualifying event. The other remaining qualifying tournament on the 2019 schedule is the U.S. Open, Oct. 23-30, at Victory Lanes Family Entertainment Center in Mooresville, N.C.
FUTURE DOCTOR REID COLLIS FULFILLS DREAM, EARNS PBA MEMBERSHIP CARD
Reid Collis, who developed his love for competitive bowling as a member of the Canterbury High School bowling team in Fort Wayne, Ind., is now closing in on his dream of becoming a doctor…and a professional bowler…according to a feature story by Elizabeth Wyman published recently in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette (https://www.journalgazette.
Collis, who is currently attending Washington University’s medical school in St. Louis, earned his PBA membership card after competing in a “PBA qualifier league” in St. Louis over the summer. While balancing his demanding medical school schedule with his long-time desire to become a PBA member, Collis isn’t sure how much bowling he’ll be able to do. But he’s hopeful.
“I've dreamed about (getting the PBA card) for a long time, and obviously, my passions are medicine and becoming a doctor in the future,” Collis told Wyman, “but it's always been something I've loved to do ever since I was a student at Canterbury and bowling on the team there.”
Collis has two more years of medical school, his residency and possibly a fellowship before fully completing school. He has yet to decide what his focus in medicine will be. He competes in PBA tournaments when he can, but most take full weekends, and sometimes that's not in his schedule. But his love for the game remains.
“It’s just been a passion of mine that I haven't been able to explore as much as I wanted to with how busy I've been,” he said. “I'm definitely looking forward to competing in more tournaments in the future and hopefully winning one of these days.”
Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio defeated Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp., Mich., by 130 pins to win the PBA50 Mel Westrich Memorial Central/Midwest Open for the fourth consecutive year at Delphos (Ohio) Recreation Center Sunday.
Kretzer finished the 20-game event with a 9-3 match play record and a total of 4,742 pins, including match play bonus pins, to earn his fifth PBA50 Central Region title of the year and his 15th career PBA50 Regional title. He also earned $1,500.
• John Furey of Howell, N.J., earned his second PBA Regional title when he defeated PBA Hall of Famer Danny Wiseman of Baltimore, 224-190, in the title match of the PBA Bowlers Discount Eastern Open presented by Radical at Terrace Lanes in Frederick, Md., Sunday.
Furey, whose previous win came in 2012, started the championship match with five strikes while Wiseman struggled with pin carry on the left lane. Wiseman closed the deficit to 22 pins late in the game. When Furey failed to clinch the win with a double in the 10th frame, Wiseman had a chance to strike out to force a roll-off, but he failed to strike on his first shot and Furey was assured of the $2,500 first prize.
In the semifinal matches, Furey defeated Matt O’Grady of Rahway, N.J., 242-191, while Wiseman eliminated Jake Rollins of Glen Rock, N.J., 245-167.
• Doug Becker of Clermont, Fla., defeated Greg Thomas of Irmo, S.C., 237-204, to win the PBA50 J&L Sports Spartanburg South Open at Paradise Lanes in Spartanburg, S.C., Sunday.
Becker, who won $2,000 along with his 10th regional title, never trailed after starting the title match with four strikes on the heels of rolling the only perfect game of the event in the semifinal round to eliminate PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Oxford, Fla., 300-256. In the other semifinal round, Thomas defeated Greg McMahan of Dandridge, Tenn., 247-196.
• Dave Axon from Belleview, Neb., and Mike Dias of Lafayette, Colo., won joint PBA50 Southwest/Midwest Regional titles in a doubleheader weekend of one-day tournaments at Junction City Bowl in Junction City, Kan.
On Saturday, Axon defeated Joel Carlson of Omaha, Neb., 245-204, to win his fourth PBA50 title and a $1,200 check. Axon qualified fourth, receiving byes to the best two-of-three-game semifinal round where he defeated defending champion Ricky Schissler of Brighton, Colo., 2-1.
On Sunday, Dias, a former Junction City champion, won five of his first seven matches in the eight-game round robin match play finals to overtake Schissler for the lead by 14 pins heading into position round. Dias held a nine-pin lead in the seventh frame and an open frame by Schissler in the ninth allowed Dias to claim his fourth Junction City title and the $1,200 victor’s check.
• Dave Arnold of Elk Grove, Calif., posted a 7-3 match play record and a 18-game total of 4,085 pins Sunday to win his 15th PBA Regional title in the 17th Annual Double Decker Lanes West/Northwest Open presented by Roto Grip at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park, Calif.
Arnold, a three-time PBA Tour title winner, won his last Tour title in 2001 and his last regional 12 years ago in 2007. The 55-year-old defeated Chris Warren of Grants Pass, Ore., and Joe Petrovich of Tracy, Calif., who tied for second place, by 58 pins for the win. Arnold earned $2,000.
• On the PBA Regional calendar for the Oct. 11-13 weekend are the PBA50/PBA60 Park Centre Lanes Central Doubles presented by Columbia 300 in North Canton, Ohio, and the PBA Japan Region’s Sound Bowl Cup Scorpion Open in Ryugasaki, Japan.
• PBA Regional tournaments scheduled for the Oct. 18-20 weekend include the PBA50 Timber Lanes Open in Oxford, Pa.; the PBA50 Waxahachie Southwest Open at Hilltop Lanes in Waxahachie, Texas; the PBA and PBA50 Northwest/West Opens presented by Dick’s Pro Shop and Boulder Falls Inn at Linn Lanes in Lebanon, Ore.; the Greater Jackson Central Open at Jax’s 60 in Jackson, Mich., and the Bowl-A-Vard Lanes Midwest Open in Madison, Wis.
• Closing out the October PBA Regional calendar will be the South Point West Challenge presented by MOTIV and the South Point Member/Non-Member Doubles presented by Hammer at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
