More State Aid-4-Day School Week?

  There is expected to be an increase of some $805 million for local school districts and rumors are bouncing all over the place that school districts are reported to be studying possible moves  towards a four-day school week with time lost from the dropped day added to the remaining four days.

  Those supporting such a move say there are big dollar savings in areas such as utilities and transportation. 

  School districts make the move to a 4-day school week support facts that say this type of move will help close gaping budget holes and stave off teacher layoffs.

  Education experts point out that little research exists to show the impact on shortened weeks on learning.

  The four-day week proposals result in lengthening the remaining school days so that the present 8 to 2:30 day could result in an 8-4  school day four days a week. 

  Some schools are turning to the four-day schedule because they have just plain run out of options. 

  School districts say they no longer have the option of asking residents to pay higher taxes, they have been forced to cut staff and some have had to close schools.

  For those who have already made the move to a four-day school week these districts report savings of anywhere between $200,000 to $500,000 trimming costs for custodial, cafeteria workers, bus drivers as well as transportation expenses and utilities. 

  Teachers will still work the same number of hours over four days instead of five but cafeteria and custodial and drivers are often hard-hit.

  Four-day weeks have been in place for decades in states like Idaho, Wyoming, New Mexico and came about as a means to combat growing energy prices.

  One major negative factor in a four-day school week is in the area of child-care where working parents have had to revamp child-care plans.

  Officials in some districts say their students and teachers make good use of their day off.

  Teacher organizations and the American Federation of Teachers have been critical of the shift to a four-day school week saying these moves have a negative affect on teaching and learning. 

  In Albany the tentative (must be approved in the new budget) $805 million comes out to about 4 percent more then current levels and most districts should get more money depending on how the aid is determined either by a district need or by the restoration of past cuts.

  Meanwhile we think the jury is still out and we don't really think we will see any four-day school weeks anytime soon. 

                                                          

Bowling Highlights Column 3-30-12

60th Fox Tournament Scheduled

The 60th annual Fox Bowling Center Handicap-Scratch Tournament at Hancock, NY will begin on March 31 and will run through April 29. The tournament is open to men, woman and mixed team, doubles and singles events.
For Saturday events, March 31, bowling times are 12:30 and 4 p.m. and for April 7, 14, 21, 28, bowling times are 12:30, 4 and 7 p.m.
Sunday bowling times are April 1 at 1 p.m., no bowling on Easter April 8, April 15, 22, 29 bowling is at 1 p.m.
Each squad will feature a 50/50 raffle and prize money is paid high over average scratch in an individual series, each squad, any event.
First place team cash prizes based on 120 entries include handicap team $2,012, women only scratch $225 and men only scratch $1,000. First place doubles handicap is $500 and scratch and handicap singles is both $200.
The tournament also offers an optional event best two out of three games scratch (must be bowled in team event). First place for men is $250 and $75 for women. This event paid over $1,200 in prizes last year.
Total tournament prize money paid last year was over $15,121. Team event entry fee is $130, singles event is $26 per person and doubles event is $52 per person. The optional event is $3 additional per bowler.
All entries must be accompanied by total entry fee.

Bowlers: This week's tip is for any bowler who ends up out of balance at the foul line when delivering a bowling ball.
If you find yourself unable to finish your delivery in a strong , balanced position, it may be a result of your follow through,It is very important that when you follow through on your delivery, you do not reach out with your arm, but up with your follow through. The reason? If you reach out, the weight of the ball will pull your upper body forward and may cause you to lose your balance. However, if you reach up, you can stay planted in a strong , solid position to deliver your bowling ball with accuracy and leverage.

Concord Project Is For Real

Cross your fingers folks and lets make sure all the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed because this time it sort of looks real that something big will be happening on the 1,500 acres that make up the bulk of the former Concord Resort in Kiamesha Lake.
Entertainment Properties Trust (EPT) and Empire Resorts officials have given strong indications that the resorts rebirth could very well start this fall.
Emanuel "Manny" Pearlman, chair of Empire's board, which oversees Monticello Casino and Raceway has said that the property will also see a large component of non-casino development.
The relocation of Monticello's racino is the focus of the first phase of the $600 million project and ground breaking could take place this November on the 50,000 square-foot casino which plans to hold 2,000 NYS Lottery-run video gaming machines, an underground parking garage and neighboring 5/8-mile harness racetrack.
Of course if New York State voters in three years approve gambling there is strong speculation that a Casino will be a part of the new Concord.
It's been made very clear in the early stages of this proposal that it's not all about gaming but the fact that the developers want this site to become a vacation mecca.
The first phase of development also includes a redesigned Monster Golf Course and the first phase of a hotel would be erected as part of the casino.
Future phases include a family resort, second and third hotel, larger casino (if gambling is legalized), work-force and baby boomer housing, RV park, lake club, water park, spa, restaurants, movie theatre, nightclub, skating rink, event field and a village consisting of town-homes, a civic center and medical services.
True a lot of the future phases will depend on what the market dictates and how the economy improves but one can sense the truthfulness and sincere approach that Entertainment Properties (EPT) and Empire Resorts officials are making.
We have all heard for several years now the pie-in-the-sky pipe dreams about what would be developed on the former Concord property. If we were a betting man our money goes down on
this proposal becoming a reality that will bring much needed employment opportunities to Sullivan County.

Agapito-Walsh Score 300's

Seventeen-year-old Rock Hill bowler Pedro Agapito III recorded his first career 300 March 13 in the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league and the next day (March 14) 20-year-old Eddie Walsh scored his third career 300 in the Wednesday Men's league, both at Kiamesha Lanes.
Pedro is in his Junior year at Monticello Central School and has been bowling for some eight years both in the Saturday Morning Youth leagues at Kiamesha and now in the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday adult leagues also at Kiamesha Lanes.
Agapito rolled his perfect game on lanes 13 and 14 using a Storm Virtual Gravito Nano bowling ball.
He has scored a number of 299 and 279 single games and his highest series to date is a 796.
Pedro started his night off with a 279 single with his 300 coming in the third game for a 771 series. He presently maintains between a 225 and 230 in the four leagues he bowls in.
Agapito is pointing his bowling career and his major goal of becoming a member of the Professional Bowlers Association and competing on the PBA tour.
He first wants to compete on the college level and has been attracted to Union College in Barbourville, KY where Head Bowling Coach Brad Piper is already showing an interest in him.
A trip to the college and some bowling competition is planned in the near future.
Petro bowls on the Rock Hill Fire Department team in the Tuesday league.
He is the son of Kim Gallagher and Pedro Agapito.
Wurtsboro bowler Edward Walsh notched his third career perfect game March 14 on lanes 9 and 10 using a Roto Grip Mutant Cell Pearl bowling ball.
His 300 came in the first game of the night and he followed it up with a 237 for a 713 series.
Presently Ed bowls in the Monday Men's league with a 212 average, the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league with a 211 average and the Wednesday Men's league with a 201 average. His second career perfect game came on December 14, 2010 in the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league at Kiamesha Lanes.
The 2010 perfect game was his first in a sanctioned Men's USBC league as his first 300 came in 2006 while bowling in the Jr.-Major Saturday morning Youth league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Edward has been bowling for some 13 years and came up through the ranks of the Saturday Morning Youth leagues at Kiamesha Lanes.
He is a 2009 graduate from Monticello Central School.
Eddie is single and the son of Leanne and Edward Walsh.
Walsh is also considering bowling in college competition at Union College.
He is employed part time by Kiamesha Lanes and also works with his father's company, Thompson Sanitation.

The Fox Bowling Center will hold its annual Junior/Bantam Youth League Bowling Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, March 24. Squad times will be 11 a.m. and noon. Danke Schoen & Thank You Too

Now you've got to like traditional German food to even consider going into a Brauhaus.
Shirley and I on our travels to the Section 9 boys basketball finals at SUNY New Paltz were attracted to the Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant on Route 44/55 and 299 as we turned off of 44-55 to travel on 299 into New Paltz.
We both agreed that this would be our stop on the way back home after the game was over.
With a little Omp pa spirits in our mind and heart following the Livingston Manor Central School Wildcats win we headed for the Brauhaus.
One can generally tells if a restaurant is serving good food by the number of cars in the parking lot but many cars did not deter us and as we entered the door and was greeted by the hostess she politely informed us that there was a 45-minute wait.
We looked at each other and said we'll wait.
A little over a half-hour went by and we were visiting with some of the guests waiting for their table when we were notified of an open table. Everyone we talked to said the wait would be worth it.
A Brauhaus would not be a Brauhaus with the traditional separate bar room with many flavors or German brew on tap.
The restaurant has the look and feel of a traditional Brauhaus and when you order your rouladen, sauerbraten , kassler ripchen, knackwurst, bratwurst and bockwurst and schnitzel platters brimming over with red cabbage, sauerkraut and spaetzle you'll know your eating the best.
Try some of the pumpernickel and a glass of wheat beer and there is no way you are leaving hungry.
Fraulein Emma, dressed in traditional German garb served us some of the most delicious sauerbraten I have ever tasted......wow the flavor was outstanding.
For a culinary adventure you will never forget stop in at the Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant.
