August 10, 2020 PBA Summer Tour Moves to Coldwater for Bowlerstore.com Classic Presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair Penultimate PBA Summer Tour event will be held at Pla-Mor Lanes in Coldwater, Ohio Coldwater, Ohio—The fourth of five PBA Summer Tour events as part of the 2021 Guaranteed Rate PBA Tour season begins Saturday from Pla-Mor Lanes with a full day of qualifying. Three squads will bowl eight games each beginning at 8 a.m. ET and the event will culminate with the four-player stepladder finals Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. Every round of competition will be streamed live on FloBowling. Here are some of the top storylines heading into the 2021 PBA Bowlerstore.com Classic presented by Moxy’s Xtra Pair: Tommy Jones Defends 2019 Title Because the event was not held last season, 2019 champion Tommy Jones enjoyed an extra year as reigning champion in Coldwater. Jones has performed well on the 2021 Summer Tour, including a sixth-place finish in Jonesboro, Ark. this past weekend following a finish of fifth, with Shannon Pluhowsky, in the Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles. Coldwater and Major Champions Each of the three players to win at Pla-Mor Lanes since the event became a national PBA Tour stop are major champions. Rhino Page, who won in Coldwater in 2017, went on to win the U.S. Open for his first major two months later. Jakob Butturff, the 2018 winner in Coldwater, won his first major the following season in the 2019 USBC Masters. Jones was already a two-time major champion when he won the Bowlerstore.com Classic in 2019, but still found a way to make post-Coldwater history a few months later, bowling 300 in the title match to win the 2020 PBA Hall of Fame Classic during his own Hall of Fame-induction weekend. Total Pins and Frequent Cuts The second day of competition features a different format, which we’ll also see in the PBA Chesapeake Open, from the previous Summer Tour events. After eight games of qualifying, the top third of the field will advance to a four-game cashers round on Sunday. Following the cashers round, the top 16 will advance to bowl three more games, after which the top eight move on to bowl two more games. After the round of eight, the top four players based on 17 games of total pinfall will advance to the stepladder finals. Tackett Holds Narrow Advantage in Summer Tour Points Race Although he missed the cut, finishing 52nd in the PBA Jonesboro Open was just enough to keep EJ Tackett in front of the PBA Summer Tour points race with two events to play. Tackett is now a mere 30 points ahead of Anthony Simonsen, who finished third in each of the first two events and 13th in Jonesboro. PBA Lubbock Sports Open champion Shawn Maldonado is third and PBA Jonesboro Open winner Matt Russo is fourth. Butturff, who finished third in Jonesboro and won in 2018 in Coldwater, is in fifth. The best 10 players at the conclusion of all five events will receive a share of the $40,000 bonus prize fund, with the top player earning $20,000. August 8, 2021 Matt Russo Wins PBA Jonesboro Open for First Career PBA Tour Title Defeats No. 1 seed Mykel Holliman in championship match Jonesboro, Ark.—Twenty-four-year-old Matt Russo became the newest PBA Tour champion when he defeated Mykel Holliman, 225-197, in the championship match to win the PBA Jonesboro Open at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center. Russo qualified in the second position for the stepladder finals and eliminated seven-time PBA Tour champion Jakob Butturff in the semifinal match before besting Holliman. When Russo, who would finish the title match first, came up in the ninth and 10th frames, Holliman’s maximum possible score was 210. Russo spared in the ninth and struck on his first shot in the 10th, meaning he’d need count to clinch the victory. Russo struck two more times, emphatically posting a 225 for his first PBA Tour title. Holliman, the 2019 PBA Tour Rookie of the Year, was in third place after first-round qualifying, second after cashers qualifying and then won all eight of his matches to earn the top seed for the stepladder. His final match win, during position round, was against Russo to clinch the top seed. That match was Russo’s only loss in match play, who lurked near the middle of the pack, albeit well inside the cut, during qualifying before winning his first seven matches to claim the second seed. Russo’s first opponent on the stepladder, Butturff, eliminated 16-year-old Eric Jones in the opening match of the stepladder finals. Although he missed the cut to cashers qualifying, EJ Tackett earned enough points with his 52nd-place finish to retain the lead in the PBA Summer Tour points race with two events left to play. After finishing 13th in Jonesboro, Anthony Simonsen is now just 30 points back of Tackett. The 10 best players on the PBA Summer Tour will receive a portion of the $40,000 bonus prize fund, with the top performer earning $20,000. Ponies Shut Out Sea Dogs In Series Finale BINGHAMTON, NY – The Rumble Ponies (36-46) used strong pitching from starter Jose Butto to blank the Portland Sea Dogs (49-33) for the third time this series en-route to a 5-0 victory. Jose Butto (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings allowing a hit with no walks and eight strikeouts. Butto allowed only two base-runners during his start with Kole Cottam reaching in the third inning on a hit-by-pitch and Grant Williams hitting a single to leadoff the sixth. Butto combined with the bullpen to throw the Ponies fourth shut-out of the season and third of the series. The Ponies started the scoring in the fourth on a Carlos Rincon solo home-run to take a 1-0 lead. Rincon finished 3-3 on the day to extend his hit-streak to 11 games. Binghamton would add on three more runs in the sixth inning courtesy of a David Rodriguez single, a Yoel Romero walk, and a fielder’s choice from Jake Mangum to extend the Ponies lead to 4-0. In the eighth inning, Yoel Romero doubled to score Matt Winaker and put the Ponies on top 5-0. Allan Winans, Colin Holderman, and Eric Orze pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to preserve the shutout. Sea Dogs starter Brayan Bello took the loss going five innings allowing four runs with three walks and 11 strikeouts. (August 7, 2021) – Three Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pitchers combined to strike out 14 Worcester Red Sox batters in a 2-1 loss on Saturday night at PNC Field. Going up against seven-time American League All-Star and MLB rehabber Chris Sale, RailRiders opener Brian Keller turned one of his best outings of the season. He tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out five and not allowing a walk. He was followed by Sean Boyle, making his Triple-A debut. Boyle turned in 4.0 scoreless frames, allowing four hits, striking out five and walking one. Before this year, the right-hander had never pitched in full season ball, and this season had only seven appearances above Low-A. The RailRiders offense sputtered against the Red Sox, garnering just two hits against Sale – a double by Thomas Milone and an Andrew Velazquez triple – and nothing else until the ninth inning. In the top of the ninth, Adam Warren (3-2) allowed a two-run home run to Tate Matheny after a 10-pitch battle to finally break the scoreless deadlock. Donny Sands led off the bottom of the ninth with a double against Zack Kelly, and scored on an Armando Alvarez groundout to cut the deficit to 2-1. August 7, 2021 PBA Public Relations Dom Barrett Leads PBA Jonesboro Open into Cashers Round Eight-time PBA Tour champion averages 227.88 to lead all qualifiers Jonesboro, Ark.—Eight-time PBA Tour champion Dom Barrett leads 39 players advancing to cashers qualifying in the PBA Jonesboro Open at Hijinx Family Entertainment Center. Barrett averaged 227.88 through eight games of qualifying and holds a 13-pin advantage over second-place Michael Davidson entering tomorrow’s five-game cashers qualifying round. Barrett, who owns two major championships among his eight titles, has won PBA Tour titles in five different countries, but has yet to claim a title on the PBA Summer Tour. Three of the five former champions in Jonesboro advanced to cashers qualifying: François Lavoie (22nd), Andrew Anderson (27th) and Tommy Jones (28th). Norm Duke, who won in 2019, did not compete. Defending champion Kyle Troup missed the cut to cashers qualifying, finishing 60th. Also missing the cut were the top two players through two events in the PBA Summer Tour points race. Reyes, Syracuse shut out Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 6-0, on Friday night Jesús Reyes pitched six scoreless innings for Syracuse on Friday night (Herm Card). Syracuse, NY - Syracuse Mets starting pitcher Jesús Reyes delivered his best start of the season, throwing six scoreless innings to lead Syracuse to a 6-0 win over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders at NBT Bank Stadium on Friday night. Reyes allowed just three hits while striking out three batters. Syracuse (25-50) struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Khalil Lee worked a leadoff walk, and then Cheslor Cuthbert reached on an error by Scranton/Wilkes-Barre pitcher Josh Maciejewski, who delivered a throw wide of second trying to retire Lee. After Martin Cervenka drew a walk to load the bases, Albert Almora Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to score Lee and put the Mets up 1-0. Syracuse added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Wilfredo Tovar led off with a double. After Travis Blankenhorn struck out, Patrick Mazeika delivered with an RBI single to make it 2-0 Mets. Lee followed with a walk, and then Cuthbert hit a single, scoring Mazeika to put Syracuse in front, 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, Travis Blankenhorn connected on a solo home run to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Mets. It was Blankenhorn's fifth home run of the season with Syracuse. The Mets extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth, starting with an Almora Jr. leadoff single. After Payton flew out, Tovar walked, and then Blankenhorn hit a one-run single, scoring Almora Jr. to increase the lead to 5-0. Mazeika followed with an RBI groundout to make it 6-0 Mets. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (47-25) was stymied by the Syracuse pitching staff. The bullpen followed Reyes with a three scoreless innings of its own. Yeizo Campos made his Triple-A debut and delivered two scoreless innings, allowing no hits and walking just one. Franklyn Kilome pitched the ninth, walking one and striking out one.
