RailRiders Roll to Fifth Straight Win

Brady Lail Fires Quality Start for Seventh Victory

 

Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) raced out to a 5-0 lead and held on to drop the Buffalo Bisons 5-3 on Saturday night at PNC Field. The win was the fifth in a row for the RailRiders (89-52). SWB finishes 16-5 against the Bisons (66-76), winning eight straight and 15 of the final 16 meetings in the series.

Brady Lail (7-6) limited the Bisons to three runs on seven hits across seven innings, tying for his longest out with SWB in 2016. James Pazos struck out the side in the eighth and Dietrich Enns finished the win with a scoreless ninth for his first Triple-A save.

The RailRiders scored five runs in the first two innings against Bisons starter Casey Lawrence (5-6). Donovan Solano singled home Mason Williams and a throwing error by Domonic Brown from right field allowed Cesar Puello across. Chris Parmelee lifted a sacrifice fly to left that plated Solano for a 3-0 lead.

Buffalo closed the gap to two runs with three in the fourth. A fielding error by Pete Kozma allowed Brown to score and a two-run double to right-center by Jio Mier trimmed the lead to 5-3. Lail pitched out of the jam with two fly outs and the Bisons were held scoreless the rest of the way.

OFF THE RAILS:

The 89 victories by SWB are the most in the Yankees era of the franchise. The 2002 Red Barons (91) were the last team to win 90 games in the International League. The RailRiders can tie the franchise record by winning their final two regular season games.

 

Solano finished 2-for-4. His 161 hits are the most in the International League and his .318 ranks fourth best. Solano needs three singles to break the franchise record of 122 by David Doster in 2002.

 

The RailRiders’ bullpen has hurled 25.2 consecutive scoreless innings while striking out 46 in that span.

SEAWOLVES WIN OVER B-METS 2-0

B-Mets Out-Dueled by SeaWolves, 2-0

BINGHAMTON, NY- The Binghamton Mets were shut out for the second consecutive game as they were blanked by the Erie SeaWolves, 2-0, Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton loaded the bases in the ninth but stranded all three men.
The B-Mets were shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since July, 2006.
The game remained scoreless until the fifth, when Christin Stewart launched a leadoff homer to right. It would be the only run allowed by B-Mets starter Nabil Crismatt and it gave Erie a 1-0 lead.
Crismatt (0-1) was strong in his Double-A debut. He struck out seven and allowed one run on five hits over six innings, but was tagged with the tough-luck loss.
Erie added to its advantage in the seventh. Dominic Ficociello led off with a single and took second on an Austin Green single. Kody Eaves then singled to right, scoring Ficociello to extend the SeaWolves lead to 2-0.
Tyler Alexander (2-1) earned the win for Erie with six shutout innings. He walked three, struck out five and retired the last ten men he faced.
Victor Cruzado walked, Boyd doubled and Raywilly Gomez walked to load the bases with two outs in the ninth inning but Maikis De La Cruz grounded out to short, ending the ballgame.
Boyd went 2-for-3 with a walk and a double and Gomez was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday. RHP Rafael Montero will start for Binghamton against RHP Thad Weber for the SeaWolves. Moosic, Pa. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) received an exclamation point to a thrilling rally in front of a sellout crowd on Friday night at PNC Field. Chris Parmelee launched a towering homer down the right field line in the last of the ninth for an instant 2-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons.

The RailRiders (88-52) claimed their seventh straight win over the Bisons (66-75) and have won 14 of 15 meetings against the Blue Jay’s top affiliate.

J.R Graham (1-2) earned his first Triple-A victory in his debut with SWB. The right-hander fired a perfect top of the ninth, striking out one. Chris Smith (0-1) shouldered the defeat after allowing an inherited runner to score the tying run in the eighth and surrendering Parmelee’s game-ender in the ninth.

Trailing 1-0 in the eighth, Pete Kozma worked a leadoff walk against reliever Wil Browning and stole second on the first pitch to Jonathan Diaz. With two strikes, Diaz laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Kozma to third. After Smith relieved Browning, Mason Williams lifted a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game.

OFF THE RAILS:

Starter Bryan Mitchell allowed one run on four hits across 5.1 innings while striking out six against no walks.

 

The RailRiders’ 88 wins match the 2008 then-SWB Yankees total from their IL North championship year. The 2002 Red Barons (91) were the last team to win 90 games in the International League. SWB can tie the franchise record by winning their final three regular season games.

 

Parmelee homered on the first pitch in the bottom of the ninth. He also had a walk-off jack against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs in an 8-7, 10-inning win on June 7. The walk-off win was the 10th of the season for SWB.

PROFESSIONAL WOMEN'S BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP

TEN PLAYERS REMAIN IN CONTENTION AT 2016 SMITHFIELD PWBA TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. – Bryanna Coté of Red Rock, Arizona, earned her spot in the 2016 Smithfield Professional Women's Bowling Association Tour Championship by beating Kelly Kulick of Union, New Jersey, in the title match of one of the final events of the season.

On Friday, Coté advanced to the second round of the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship, taking place at Uptown Alley, by once again dispatching her Team USA teammate in thrilling fashion.

Coté was one of six players to advance to the second round at the season’s final major Friday. The opening round consisted of best-of-five, single-elimination matches.

Coté fell behind early in the match, dropping the first two games against Kulick, but quickly responded with two consecutive wins to even the match. In the deciding game, neither player could pull away. In the end, it was Coté who threw the first strike in the final frame to seal the Game 5 victory, 236-215. Cote will face left-hander Cherie Tan of Singapore on Saturday at 9 a.m. Eastern.

“I wasn’t throwing it very well the first couple of games,” said Coté, who recently won the PWBA Lexington Open to earn a spot in the Tour Championship. “I wasn’t really comfortable where I was on the lane, so I actually decided to go farther right where I’m more comfortable playing. My husband, Randy, and I decided to go there, and it worked out. Both Kelly and I had struggles with carry and getting the ball to read. The right lane was really tight. I finished on that lane, which I wasn’t looking forward to, but I just told myself to execute the best I could. I know Kelly was fishing during the fourth game to find something, and she did, so it really could’ve gone either way.”

The bracket-style event continues Saturday with six more single-elimination matches, after which the four finalists will be set for Sunday’s championship round.

The semifinals and title match of the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network on Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern.

Saturday’s second-round matchups include: Shannon Pluhowsky of Dayton, Ohio, vs. Amanda Greene of Romney, West Virginia; Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, against 2015 PWBA Rookie of the Year Stefanie Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas, and defending champion Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, taking on Singapore’s New Hui Fen. 

The event’s 16 players qualified for the Tour Championship by either winning a title during the 2016 season or earning enough competition points to earn a spot in the bracket.

All 2016 PWBA Tour champions (who were members at the time of their victory) received an automatic invitation to the Tour Championship, and the remainder of the 16-player field was filled out through the PWBA points list.

The top two players on the season point list, reigning PWBA Player of the Year Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, New York, and Colombia native Rocio Restrepo, now from Louisville, Ohio, automatically were seeded into the semifinals, while McEwan and Pluhowsky received first-round byes for the Tour Championships as the third and fourth players on the points list.

The remaining 12 invitees battled in the first round of matches Friday.

B-METS LOSE 7-0

September Mourn: B-Mets Drop Finale, 7-0

ALTOONA, PA – The Binghamton Mets racked up 11 hits, including four from Amed Rosario, but failed to push a run across in a 7-0 loss to the Altoona Curve on Thursday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field. Binghamton closed a 2-6 road trip with their ninth shutout loss of the season.
Elvis Escobar put the Curve on top right off the bat. Altoona’s leadoff hitter deposited Joe Shaw’s third pitch of the night beyond the right-field wall for his second homer of the season at Double-A.
Shaw settled down after the long ball and threw five innings in his Double-A debut. Edwin Espinal touched the righty with a sacrifice fly in the third and Jin-De Jhang added another sac fly in the fifth.
The B-Mets failed to provide the newcomer with any offensive support against Curve starter Alex McRae. The visitors’ best change came in the third. Binghamton loaded the bases, but Dominic Smith and Matt Oberste, their four and five hitters in the lineup, flied out to end the threat.
Altoona tacked on four more runs against B-Met relievers Logan Taylor and Luis Mateo. Stetson Allie hit his second homer in as many games and Espinal capped a nine-RBI series with a two-run double.
McRae (8-6) stranded nine runners, including a half-dozen in scoring position, over six scoreless innings to collect the win. The righty scattered eight hits, walked one and struck out three in his second win against the B-Mets.
Shaw (0-1) allowed three runs on six hits over six innings. He walked three and racked up six strikeouts, including five against the last nine batters he faced.
The B-Mets (62-74) return to the Southern Tier for their final series of the season. Binghamton starts a four-games set against the Erie SeaWolves on Friday at 7:05 PM. SWB Earns Home Field Advantage for Governor’s Cup Semifinals

 

Buffalo, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) earned their second consecutive International League North Division Championship with a 6-1 victory over the Buffalo Bisons on Thursday night at Coca-Cola Field. The title was the 11th in the history of the SWB franchise. The RailRiders (87-52) have won nine straight in Buffalo and 13-of-14 against the Bisons (66-74) overall.

Phil Coke (5-3) earned the win with a quality start. The southpaw limited Buffalo to a run on seven hits across six innings. He walked two and struck out six.  SWB scored four on eight hits off Jason Berken (0-2) over his 5.1 innings.

Chris Parmelee opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo homer to left. The shot was his 10th with SWB. The RailRiders plated three on five straight hits, including singles by Cito Culver, Mason Williams and Cesar Puello.

Jesus Montero plated the Bisons’ only tally with a single off Coke in the third. Run-producing hits by Rob Refsnyder and Donovan Solano capped the scoring in the eighth.

OFF THE RAILS:

The 87 wins by SWB match the 2010 then-SWB Yankees total from their IL North championship year. The 2008 club set the Yankees-era high mark with 88 wins. The 2002 Red Barons (91) were the last team to win 90 games.

 

With two perfect frames by Tyler Webb and a scoreless inning by Johnny Barbato, the SWB bullpen has not allowed a run in 20 consecutive stanzas. They have compiled 36 strikeouts in that span.

 

Williams finished 3-for-5 with an RBI. Williams is 7-for-14 (.500) over his last three games played with two doubles and six RBI.

 

The RailRiders will host Game Three of the Governor’s Cup semifinals against the Wild Card on September 9 at 6:35 p.m. If necessary, they will also be home for Game Four (Sept. 10) and Game Five (Sept. 11). Playoff tickets are on sale.

Records Fall in RailRiders’ Rout of Bisons

Jordan Montgomery Sets New SWB Scoreless Innings Streak Record

 

Buffalo, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) walloped the Buffalo Bisons 14-2 on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park and either matched or broke franchise records along the way. The RailRiders (86-52) have won eight straight in Buffalo and 12-of-13 against the Bisons (66-73) overall.

Jordan Montgomery (5-1) hurled 5.1 scoreless frames to establish a new club record for scoreless innings pitched. His 29.2 frames surpassed the run of Tim Mauser from May 15 - June 1, 1991. Montgomery’s final line included two runs on six hits, no walks and three strikeouts over six innings. Richard Bleier held the Bisons scoreless over the final three stanzas for his first save with SWB.

Donovan Solano finished the night 4-for-5 and equaled franchise marks for a single game with three doubles and five runs scored.

The RailRiders scored eight runs on nine hits off Bisons’ hurler Scott Diamond and chased the left-hander with nobody out in the third. Rob Refsnyder singled home two to highlight a four-run second inning and Mason Williams plated two with a hit as part of a four-run third.

Kyle Higashioka mashed his 10th homer with SWB in the fifth off reliever Chad Girodo. The two-run shot put the RailRiders up 10-0.

SWB scored two runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Cito Culver brought in runs with a hit in each frame.

OFF THE RAILS:

SWB lowered their magic number to clinch the International League North Division down to two. A combination of a RailRiders win and a Lehigh Valley IronPigs loss on Thursday night would lock up a share of the division crown.

Matt Dominguez ended Montgomery’s scoreless innings streak with a bases-loaded, two-run single in the sixth. The runs were the first for Buffalo in 36.1 innings against SWB.

With Bleier’s outing, the RailRiders’ bullpen has fired 17 straight frames without yielding a run while striking out 33 in that span.

The RailRiders 18 hits and 12-run margin of victory matched season highs.

SWB had four hitters finish with three or more hits, including: Solano, Higashioka, Jake Cave and Culver.
