Here & There Column 5-8-12

 Honesty Is Still Alive

Is honesty a real part of your life?
Many folks would say that honesty was instilled into their psyche as a child.
Mom was always a righteous person, had a good religious background and a definite moral compass that she passed along to family members by her words, deeds and examples.
Some in our society today don't get it when it comes to truth, justice and what is right.
The problem has always been the truth, if told, can often hurt people unnecessarily. There are some things that need not be told to protect someone from pain.
As a long time photo-journalism columnist I have taken the belief that what I convey to people is real and not tainted by ulterior motives or lesser truth as being aware of one's ego and motives is a useful tool in determining the reasons behinds one's actions.
You see, what honesty is, is often not obvious and needs some understanding. I think kindness is a consideration when answering a leading question. There is a give and take in all relationships and being honest can only improve your entire lifestyle.
A trend in society today seems to show a general lack of trust and honesty many times is imbued in our attitudes and this is all because we have chosen to be dishonest with our true feelings.
Honesty is the best policy and over the weekend of April 28-29 while traveling upstate to the NYS Elks Bowling Tournament, then visiting friends Sunday in Binghamton and shopping at the Johnson City Wegmans Supermarket we arrived home and several hours later learned what real honesty consists of.
After unpacking our clothes, putting away items you take on a trip, doing some laundry and putting the items away we purchased at Wegmans I asked my wife what was the brand name of one of the products we bought at Wegmans.
My wife paused and said that she did not remember putting that item away while unpacking the groceries. We looked around the house, searched the car and then my wife recalled that she thought she heard something fall and hit the ground when she was putting the groceries into the back seat of the car at the  supermarket parking lot but since she did not see anything laying on the ground by the car she closed the car door and we left the parking lot.
Being that the item we could not locate was valued close to the $20 range I called Wegmans to just ask if possibly the clerk set this item aside and did not put it into our shopping bags.
The customer service clerk replied back to me, Mr. Townsend you just are not going to believe this," and went on to say, "the item you are inquiring about apparently dropped out of your shopping bag in the parking lot and it was picked up by one of our customers and brought back into the store."
Well, I almost fell off the chair I was sitting in as the customer service representative told me all we had to do is bring in the receipt showing the item and that they had it recorded in their computer system and anytime I was in the store I could pick up the same item without any charge.
Now go ahead and figure this one .... I can truthfully say that honesty is still alive in today's society.

Golf Tip
By Robert Menges

  Play golf to stay young.
The tip: In today's day in age, with modern medicine and advances in science, people are living longer and healthier lives. So many senior citizens are exercising and eating right to maintain an active life. Research shows that playing golf can add years to your life and keep the mind sharp.
I believe there is no other way to enjoy nature then being out on the course. Seeing the animals, hearing the birds chirp, certainly gives a sense of appreciation of life. Most golf courses afford gorgeous views, vibrant color and good old fashioned fresh air. There is no better way to spend a few hours with a group of friends while walking, talking and laughing your way around the course                 Everyone knows what a mental game golf is. One of the best ways to keep the mind sharp is to have one use your mind for the technical side of golf. Golf is the perfect sport for this because you are getting mental stimulation, you are counting strokes and analyzing your next shot.
In your search for the fountain of youth, let golf help you find your way. By getting exercise, stimulating your mind and having social interaction, you can stay younger and live longer.
Robert Menges is the head golf professional at the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club, Mt. Hope Road, Swan Lake. He is available for private lessons and if you have a question or subject you would like covered, he can be reached at 845-292-0323 or via e-mail at menges@hughes.net

The Putting Tip
By Joe Bermel

We welcome back for the second year the world famous "Putting Doctor" Joe Bermel to our weekly column. Joe will entertain golfers about the importance of putting to the entire game of golf.
  Putting: A Pragmatic Approach:
How important is putting to the entire game of  golf.? We can not understate it. On average, 43% of the total score is putting. For a golfer to tangibly raise the skill level of their putting game, they must understand, and be committed to apply, all of the Keys To Good Consistent Putting.
Absolute Key # 1 is organization of your mind. What are we going to do and how are we going to go about doing it. A clear organized mind is paramount. Key # 2 is a specific, exacting, methodical PPR ( Pre-Putt Routine). A great PPR is always airtight. Key # 3 is that of a triangle. Your eyes see the distance between the ball and the hole. A signal is sent to your mind. Your mind sends a signal to the muscles in your fingers for the amount of acceleration for the desired distance you want the ball to travel. EYES, MIND, HAND.
Joe is available for private lessons, group, corporate, organizations and golf shows-tournaments. His special edition DVD "How To Putt Well" is available by calling 631-589-1384, at his web site www.ThePuttingDoctor.com or by email at joe@theputtingdoctor.com

  Ed's Outlook

We are seeing more and more the promotion of "Golf Packages" throughout various sections of  New York State and South Carolina and sometimes get concerned that no efforts are being put forth to sell Sullivan County golf with hotel/motel and dining facilities all pitching in and working together to get golfers to visit and golf in our beautiful golf paradise.
Golfers can go to South Carolina in the spring and fall and find packages that offer golf, cart, two in a room motel accommodations and breakfast and dinner for between $70 and $80 a day.
We have started to see some dinner and golf and lunch and golf packages offered in Sullivan and Delaware counties but there has to  more of an effort to get motel/hotel owners, restaurants and golf courses all working on the same page for a total golf package that will attract golfers to our county courses from May through October.
The golf economy here could stand a booster shot and we believe golf packages would help.

Mickelson Perfect Game

JOEY MICKELSON PERFECT GAME

Tri-Valley Central School ace right-hander Joey Mickelson only needed 66 pitches to record a perfect no-hit game Monday afternoon on the Fallsburg Central School varsity baseball diamond as the Bears defeated the Comets 13-0. Mickelson, pitching here in the sixth inning,  struck out eight in becoming the 12th player in New York State High School Baseball Records to retire every batter, giving up no walks and not allowing a runner to reach first base. He also helped himself at the plate by getting two hits and four RBI's. With the win Tri-Valley improved their record to 8-2. In the background to Mickelson's right is first baseman George Baggata.

Fire Dept's Hold Recruitment Drives

Sullivan County Fire Departments held open house and recruitment drives during the latter part of April in an attempt to stop a trend that has seen a decline in folks volunteering to become members of  fire departments.
Fire department officials have indicated that volunteerism might be up during a down economy but volunteer fire departments are suffering.
When asked what the major obstacles are in getting folks to become volunteer firemen is increased training requirements, more duties, squeezed family lives and less-flexible employers.
Officials indicate that recruitment at times is a problem while others say that its hard to keep people once they've joined.
There is also losses when folks get to a certain age that they just don't feel comfortable fighting fires and performing all the important jobs firemen do.
Firemen leave because they have to work longer hours at their regular jobs as employers downsize, others have lost their jobs and some are moving out of the area  they serve.
Officials also point out that in the past 20 years the number of volunteer firefighters has declined around 8 percent and volunteers make up a large percentage of the firefighting forces.
Some Fire Departments have had to come up with novel approaches to rounding up and retaining new recruits.
The National Fire Protection Association gives strong indication that the volunteer fire service finds itself  at a serious fork in the road and that the number of volunteer firefighters in the United States is at a two-decade low and recruitment efforts are being hampered by numerous socioeconomic factors.
An important figure that sometimes is not noted is the factor showing serious concern in the number of firefighters per 1,000 residents they protect.
We can certainly be very proud of all our local fire departments in the efforts they put forth and the excellent protection they give us......but.......please.......if you can help then go and volunteer so that these great services can continue.
God Bless all our volunteer firefighters.

                                                                       The Bowling Tip
                                                         By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: One of our previous tips was designed to help you achieve the correct body position to properly execute a bowling shot and be able to repeat it.
This week we will cover the release......information that will help bowlers on all levels.
A properly executed release is possibly one of the most misunderstood parts of a bowling shot. Most bowlers tend to muscle the ball through the release zone, either accelerating or decelerating on the downswing. The proper release for all bowlers, whether you are six years old with a conventional grip or an accomplished bowler with many years experience, should be executed by letting gravity bring the ball from the top of the swing through the release zone with no interference from your arm or shoulder muscles.
If your ball fits properly, the gravity will take it off your hand at the right time providing your body is in the proper position. Any rotation on the ball should come from your hand only, not your arm.
Using the proper technique will allow you to get as much rotation on the ball as desired.
Note, however, if your ball does not fit properly, it will require excessive grip pressure to hold on to which will make the release harder to execute.
Gravity can be your best friend or worst enemy depending on how you use it.

Jon is definitely on a roll.
