The Fox Bowling Center will hold its annual Junior/Bantam Youth League Bowling Tournament tomorrow, Saturday, March 24. Squad times will be 11 a.m. and noon. This family fun tournament will cap off another great year of youth bowling. Trophies for the season and the tournament will be handed out. The youth bowler may bowl with a friend or mom or dad. Now you've got to like traditional German food to even consider going into a Brauhaus.
Shirley and I on our travels to the Section 9 boys basketball finals at SUNY New Paltz were attracted to the Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant on Route 44/55 and 299 as we turned off of 44-55 to travel on 299 into New Paltz.
We both agreed that this would be our stop on the way back home after the game was over.
With a little Omp pa spirits in our mind and heart following the Livingston Manor Central School Wildcats win we headed for the Brauhaus.
One can generally tells if a restaurant is serving good food by the number of cars in the parking lot but many cars did not deter us and as we entered the door and was greeted by the hostess she politely informed us that there was a 45-minute wait.
We looked at each other and said we'll wait.
A little over a half-hour went by and we were visiting with some of the guests waiting for their table when we were notified of an open table. Everyone we talked to said the wait would be worth it.
A Brauhaus would not be a Brauhaus with the traditional separate bar room with many flavors or German brew on tap.
The restaurant has the look and feel of a traditional Brauhaus and when you order your rouladen, sauerbraten , kassler ripchen, knackwurst, bratwurst and bockwurst and schnitzel platters brimming over with red cabbage, sauerkraut and spaetzle you'll know your eating the best.
Try some of the pumpernickel and a glass of wheat beer and there is no way you are leaving hungry.
Fraulein Emma, dressed in traditional German garb served us some of the most delicious sauerbraten I have ever tasted......wow the flavor was outstanding.
For a culinary adventure you will never forget stop in at the Mountain Brauhaus Restaurant.

Eddie Lake Scores Two 300's

Forty-eight year old Monticello kegler Eddie Lake is on a roll lately and he credits his accomplishments to a new bowling ball.
Ed recorded his 14th career 300 this past Monday, March 12 on lanes 9 and 10 bowling a 300 in the first game and followed it up with a 203 and 227 for a 730 series.
His13th career 300 game was rolled on February 27 in the same Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lane on lanes 5 and 6 where he scored a 300, 205, 236, 741..
He presently has a 227 average in the Monday Men's league, a 232 average in the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league and a 231 average in the Friday Mixed Doubles league.
And for both of these perfect game scores Lake wasn't using his old Hammer bowling ball but instead he recently switched to a new Hammer Epidemic drilled by Tom Palmer at Kiamesha Lanes. Eddie still talks about his old Hammer and bowls with it occasionally. He still believes in the fact that some of the old bowling equipment can still do the job..
About two years ago Lake had been without his now 24-year-old Hammer bowling ball as it was being repaired by Mickey Luongo down at Mike's Pro Shop in Middletown. He got the repaired ball back and in two weeks the old Hammer resulted in revising the Eddie Lake "300 game Express" as he smashed the maples for his ninth career 300 game on December 29, 2008.
Lake said the new Hammer ball has helped him scores two recent 800 plus series, He also missed another 300 game two weeks ago when he recorded a 299, leaving a four pin on the last ball.
During the 2007-08 bowling season Lake recorded four 300 games. Eddie had a 300 on January 21, 2008, scored another 300 in the second game of a match November 9, 2008 in the Friday Night Mixed league making it his third perfect 300 game that season.
Eddie on October 1 and October 2 , 2007, made bowling history in Sullivan County by bowling 300 games on consecutive nights. Lake on Monday October 1 in the Monday Men's league smashed the maples for a 223, 300, 277, 800 series. The next night, Tuesday October 2, while a substitute bowler in the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league he scored a 207, 300, 235 for a 732 series. Both leagues are at Kiamesha Lanes.
His high 856 series was bowled in 2004 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
In this past Monday night's match his brother, Rick Lake banged out a 770 series with single games of 258, 248 and 264. The Monday Night Men's league Team Lake team consists of Ed, Rick, Roy Sweeney and Mickey Lake.
Considered one of the premier bowlers in the tri-county area Lake is single and comes from a well known Sullivan County bowling family with brother Ricky and his mother and father Mickey and Joan Lake.

Bowlers: This week's tip was suggested by a league bowler and applies mostly to those bowlers who are using modern bowling balls.
You may not know that the modern bowling ball is porous with several different densities and has numerous chemicals in the cover stocks.

As these balls change temperature, the cover and core will expand and contract. Due to the different materials used for the core, inner core and cover, this fluctuation occurs at different rates.
Leaving the ball in a car when temperatures are severe, very hot or very cold, the expansion and contraction causes severe stress on the cover. This stress us even greater when a cold ball is used to bowl while it is still cold. This may cause the ball to crack.
So the tip is not only educational but let it serve as a reminder to take care of your bowling ball investment--avoid the experience that the above mentioned bowler went through--and if you carry your balls to and from the center, don't leave them in your car. National Tourney Starts Thursday

The 2012 NJCAA Division III National Tournament returns to Sullivan County Community College (SCCC) March 15-17 and once again a lot of pats on the back go out to the outstanding efforts made by representatives of SCCC and other community folks who have worked hard to bring a Men's College Basketball National Championship Tournament to Sullivan County.
The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III National Championships will be hosted at SCCC in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse beginning this Thursday March 15 and will go through Saturday March 17.
Eight of the best NJCAA Division III men's basketball teams will compete for the National championship and at the time of this writing one additional division had yet to be decided. The seven teams to date include The Bronx Community College Broncos, SUNY Delhi Broncos, Milwaukee Area Technical College Raiders, Cedar Valley College Suns, Central Lakes College Raiders, Brookdale Community College Blues and the Roxbury Community College Tigers.
In an upset that hits particularly close to home, the D-III National Tournament hosts, the SUNY Sullivan Generals, were beaten in Region XV seminfinal play by Nassau Community College on March 3 and will not be a part of this tournament.
Sullivan County is once again putting it's best foot forward for this event and we say a great big welcome to all eight teams, their coaches and their fans who should give a nice boost to our local economy this weekend.

Tri-Valley Competition Night

TRI-VALLEY COMPETITION NIGHT

GRAHAMSVILLE--The Tri-Valley Junior Class of 2013 are repeat champions of the 36th Annual Tri-Valley Competition Night held Friday March 9 in the high school gym.
The same class won the Competition Night championship as Sophomores last year.
The annual event filled the gym with a standing-room only crowd and featured all four high school grades 9-12 along with Bill O'Morrissey as Master of Ceremonies, Kathi Smith and Kevin Giroux as score keepers and Jeanne Fiedler, Derek Adams, Tyler Eckhoff, Mellonee Cappiello, Beth Rice, Karen Andrews, Cory Turner and Christopher Smith serving as referees and judges.
Events consisted of the Obstacle Course, Crab Soccer, Cage Ball, Relay, Tug of War, Brain Teaser and Lip Sync(skits).
The Class of 2015 has 87 members, Class of 2014 has 94 members, Class of 2013 has 81 members and the Class of 2012 has 97 members.
Points for each class was awarded for spirit week and participation, decoration and lip sync (skits), point for all events, sportsmanship points and the canned food drive challenge.
In the Obstacle Course event the Seniors won 2 points, Juniors 3, Sophomores 5 and Freshman 1. The Crab Soccer event saw 5 points go to the Freshman Sophomore class, 1 to the Sophomores, 3 to the Juniors and 1 to the Seniors. The Freshman class won 5 points in the Cage Ball event, 3 points to the Sophomore Class, 1 to the Junior class and 1 to the senior class.
The Relay Race was won by the Senior Class with 5 points, Junior Class 1 point, Sophomore Class with 3 points and the Freshman Class with 2 points. The Tug of War event went to the Senior class with 5 points, 3 points to the Junior Class, and 1 point each to the Sophomore and Freshman Class.
In the Decoration category the Junior class again prevailed with 10 points, Seniors 5, Sophomores 1 and Freshman 3.
The Lip-Sync (skits) event went to the Juniors with 10 points, Seniors 5, Sophomores 3 and Freshman 1. Spirit week points was won by the Freshman 4, Seniors 3 points, Juniors 1 point and Sophomores 2 points. Sportsmanship points saw the Freshman and Sophomores with 5 points each and the Juniors and Seniors with 4 points each.
In the Brain Teaser event 5 points went to both the Juniors and Seniors with 0 points to the Freshman and Sophomores.
Total points which include participation and canned goods donations gave the overall championship to the Junior class with 46 points, second place to the Senior class with 43 points, third place to the Freshman with 31 points and fourth place to the Sophomores with 26 points.

Amy Paes Scholarshuip Games

Scholarship Games Are Fun For Everyone

GRAHAMSVILLE-- The Amy Paes Scholarship Basketball games provide a lot of enthusiasm and pride for the four sixth grade teams in their "Moving Up" competition.
The event took place Saturday, March 10 in the Tri-Valley Central School main gym.
They are now considered graduates from the Saturday BearCub Basketball Program and many look forward to Tri-Valley's seventh grade modified basketball. The Saturday BearCub Program is under the guidance and management of Scott Mickelson.
In the girls competition between the Red team and the Blue team the Red team coached by Chris Gozza pulled out a 10-8 victory over the Blue team coached by Gary Buley.
The boys Blue team coached by Jonathan Edwards defeated the Red team coached by Greg Botsford 18-12.
Scott Mickelson made two special presentations during this event to Jonathan Edwards and Erin Smith for their "years of service and dedication to the BearCub Basketball Program," and that the plaques presented to them were given "with deep appreciation and heartfelt gratitude and your commitment to this program is an inspiration to us all."
Girls team players included Lily Gozza, Taylor Cox, Alexis Walter, Angelina DiToro, Gillian Matthews, Julie Helthaler, Elise Yamen, Fiona Luiso, Anna Hendrickson, Maggie Jane Mitchell, Jaclyn Musa, Morgan Shamro, Dominque Johnson, Brianna Jackson, Nicole Scuderi and Nirvana Blake.
Sixth grade boys team players included Frank Vurkio, Patrick Coombe, Anthony Santiago, Anthony Scuderi, Mikhail Vainblat, Connor Campbell, Brennan Healy, Dustin Rogers, Bruce Lynch, Joseph Edwards, Ryan Banks, Matthew Monforte, Michael DeWitt, Dev VanSleet, Chase Botsford, Kyle Krier, Jack Eddings, Patrick Krummack, Jared Palmer and Devon Dulaff.
Volunteers assisting with this scholarship event included refs Erin Smith, Sabrena Smith, Kainan Justiniano, Ashley Exner, announcers Greg Swarthout, Steve McInerney, Jonathan Edwards and scorekeepers Cory Turner and Kevin Giroux.
The Tri-Valley Alumni/Faculty (odd numbered year graduates vs. even numbered year graduates) game turned out to be quite a shooting exhibition by 2006 graduate Ian Exner and 2003 graduate Kyle Humphrey as the two led the Red team to a 124-70 victory over the Blue team. Exner ended up with 35 points and Humphrey with 34 points with both players showing outstanding three-point scoring skills along with fast-break scoring abilities.
Participants in the Alumni/Faculty game along with Exner and Humphrey were Kyle Walter, Scott Michelson, Cory Turner, Alan Moss, Branton Smith, Brent Lawrence, Greg Botsford, Joe Lee, April Meade, Tim Martin, Mike Moss, Michael Kaplan, Chris Gozza, Fred Moore, Lacey Moore and Craig Terbush.
The proceeds of $671 from this event went to benefit the Amy Pres Scholarship Fund.
