Local Bowler Makes PBA Debut

Twenty-six year-old Claryville bowler Shane Cunningham made his official Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) debut at the 69th U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, NJ the week of February 20-26.
Officially joining the PBA in January, Shane has been bowling for some eight years in several leagues at Kiamesha Lanes. He presently maintains a 211 average in the Wednesday Men's league and subs in the Tuesday Mixed Firefighters league and the Monday Men's league.
"I stated out bowling with the White Lake Fire Department team and also bowled with Dean Shattuck's team on Wednesday, Shane said.
Picking the PBA tournament with the toughest shot the association lays down is always an eye opener and when asked what the oiled 42 feet from gutter to gutter and 80% oil was like, Shane noted, "it was definitely eyeopening, a different experience and I definitely have to practice a lot more and will enter some upcoming Regional PBA tournaments."
His next PBA Regional tournament competition will include an event on the "White" pattern at Catskill April 20-22 and the East Regional Final with the same pattern May 4-6 at Rome, NY.
The bowling balls that Cunningham used in the US Open included three Hammer Taboo's.
Shane said that the tournament competition for him included Tuesday-Thursday rounds of 6 games per day for a total of 18 games. He didn't make the cut after Thursday's competition and said, "I averaged like 150."
Asked what got him into the game of bowling, Cunningham said he was inspired by "a family of bowlers including grandparents Claude and Ruth Hendrickson." He sadly announced that his grandmother passed away on the third day of his competition but that he was not informed about her death until after the competition was over.
Cunningham at the close of his competition also had the opportunity to meet the great legend in bowling, Carmen Salvino, who won 17 PBA tour titles. They shared a photo opportunity together with Mike and Mickey Luongo who now represent Storm and Roto-Grip in the Northeast. Salvino was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1975.
Four other Sullivan County bowlers, Dean and Kelly Shattuck of Monticello and Bob and Barbara Cady of Livingston Manor also attended the Thursday through Sunday portion of the U.S. Open.
Shane is married to Deb and they are parents to 8-month old daughter Zouey. He is employed as a correction officer with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department.

The Bowling Tip

Bowlers: This weeks tips is for all bowlers regardless of your level and it has to do with understanding the correct body position needed to execute a bowling shot and being able to duplicate it.
If you were to stand straight on the approach, facing the pins, letting the ball hang on your hand, you could not swing the ball straight without hitting your hip with the ball. This is impossible to do without swinging the ball around your hip because the ball is too big.
This "roundhouse swing" is not able to be duplicated shot after shot.
Therefore, you might be in a position to be able to swing the ball toward your desired target without any obstacles.
The tip: Get your head as far to the right (or left if left handed) and tilt our bowling shoulder slightly downward. Contrary to what some of your fellow bowlers might tell you, you must drop your shoulder toward the floor in order to avoid the "roundhouse swing". At the same time, slightly pen your hips and shoulder and you will be able to swing your arm straight toward your target time and time again.
Due to different physiologist, the exact position may vary slightly from person to person, but, when correctly positioned, you can use gravity to control the tempo of your swing.

We Respect The Amish Lifestyle

During a recent visit to the Lancaster, Pa. Amish country it became very evident to me that the Amish lifestyle appears difficult for non-Amish folks but certainly simple to understand.
A buggy ride with a Mennonite driver and a walk through an Amish home gave me a great respect for the Amish people and I came away with a little bit of the peace, tranquility, and contentment found among the Amish.
An Amish woman cutting up some beans said quietly to me that tourists, although sometimes bothersome, are very good for the economy.
An important role in the Amish life style is the separation between church and the state and the Amish live by basic rules which includes no permanent physical attachments to the outside world.
That means no telephone wires, no electrical wires and no water or gas lines connected to their residence or work place. Simply stated there is no TV or Radio in use by the Amish. They do read their own published newspapers.
I liked the part when told that the kitchen is the center of the family activities.....we have lost so much when it comes to family activities and today its everybody doing their own thing without family unity.
You certainly do not find the Amish worried about gasoline prices as their horse drawn buggies eliminate that concern and their sources of energy include water wheels, windmills and the diesel engine run by propane which is used mainly for their milking machines, the milk cooler and the pump for water.
Their washing machines are run by a gasoline engine and ironing by the use of a Coleman iron which runs on white gas.
Propane is also used to light their lamps. The kitchen in the winter is heated by a wood or coal stove. In the summer a gas stove (bottled gas) is used for cooking. There is running water in each home and bottled gas is used to heat the water.
Amish do not build expensive church buildings and worship services are held at their homes in districts made up of approximately 25 families with Sunday worship services lasting from 8 a.m. to noon followed by a meal. The services move to a different families home each week.
Amish are very religious and follow the Bible teachings as literally as possible and apply it to every facet of their lives. The Amish are a non-resistance group and practice non-resistance daily.
Education is only through the eight grade as Amish believe that education is only necessary to the point of being a good farmer, wife, mother or housekeeper. One room school houses is the norm here and they pay school taxes but do not accept any help from the government.
In the Lancaster area large farms dot the landscape which includes the growing and selling of tobacco, considered their main cash crop.
Large gardens feed the Amish family and some will rent a stand in a market place and sell fresh fruits and vegetables and many hand crafted articles.
Not many in our modern lifestyle would be able to adopt to the Amish way of life and one has to admire how well they do without all the modern conveniences available to us today.
Asked what motivates what they do we were told the Amish have a strong belief in the bible verse, 1 Thess, 4:11 which reads, "And that ye study to be quiet and to do your own business, and work with your own hands."

Bowling Highlights Column 3-2-12

Palmer Scores 17th Career 300

Tri-Valley Central School District Superintendent Tom Palmer scored his 17th career 300 game on February 17 in the Kiamesha Lanes Friday Mixed league.
Palmer, 47, noted that this is his first league 300 as his previous perfect games were all scored in tournament competition.
The 300 game was bowled in the third game of the night. His first two games were 205, 236 for a 741 series,
This 300 was scored using a Hammer Taboo bowling ball.
Palmer has been bowling for some 47 years with a considerable amount of amateur tournament competition.
His previous high series was an 821.
He presently maintains a 217 average in this the only league he bowls in.
Tom's Friday Mixed league team is Krist Office Supply with team members Laura Palmer and Gene and Judy Kelly.
Tom and Laura have four children.

The Bowling Tip

Bowlers: This week's tip is a reminder that although there are so many aggressive high performance bowling balls available, the main component of the sport is having a sharp game and becoming a good shot maker.
Lane conditions today have become very soft and that combination with today's bowling balls has led to high scoring conditions.
These conditions make the majority of today's bowlers very complacent about working on their physical game and what hopefully will save bowling are the Sport Bowling Leagues.
These leagues make bowlers learn how to adjust to varying lane conditions and understand how to use today's bowling balls becomes only part of the equation.
For those bowlers who want to maximize their potential in this sport, I cannot stress enough the importance of finding a qualified and certified bowling instructor. Finding an instructor who uses video technology to completely analyze your game will be very helpful.
The knowledge you gain from a Certified Instructor is knowledge that will be useful to you and will stay with you throughout your bowling life.

Manor Wildcats Wins Championship

Championships continue to roll in for the Livingston Manor Central School varsity boys sports teams as the Wildcats captured the Section 9 Class D boys baseketball title Saturday evening, March 3 at SUNY New Paltz defeating John A. Coleman Catholic 70-52. Livingston Manor the No. 1 seed in Section 9 now advances to the Section 1 championship game at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Westchester County Center in White Plains. Coleman Defeats Lady Bears

The prediction that the John A. Coleman Catholic girls varsity basketball team was a well oiled machine proved to be correct Friday night Feb. 3 at SUNY New Paltz in the Class C final as the Stateswomen defeated the Tri-Valley Lady Bears 56-28. Coleman's height advantage and stingy defense proved to be just too much for Tri-Valley. Coleman's tough defense contributed to many of the Bears turnovers. Tri-Valley finishes the season with an 18-2 record losing only this game and a regular season loss to Tuxedo. A good season Tri-Valley and great coaching by John Tenbus.
