LPGA HALL OF FAME NEWS Linda Vollstedt, Dr. Debbie Crews, and Kathy Murphy to be Inducted into the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame Three outstanding LPGA Professionals represent the Hall of Fame class of 2020 DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Nov. 6, 2020 – Linda Vollstedt, a member of the LPGA Professionals for over 38 years who served as President and Vice President of the Western Section from 1986-92; Debbie Crews, an LPGA Master Professional and Founder and CEO of Opti Brain; and Kathy Murphy, a Resident Golf Professional at Palm-Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. and Head Professional at The Plantation Golf & CC in Venice, Fla. have been elevated into elite company as 2020 inductees to the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame. Linda Vollstedt Linda Vollstedt first joined the LPGA Professionals as an officer in 1986 when coaches were not really recognized in the organization. Vollstedt fought hard to give recognition to the “coach,” as she believed that coaching was teaching and teaching was coaching. In her early years as an officer on the Executive Committee, Vollstedt pushed for more educational workshops and seminars and assisted LPGA Professionals National President Kerry Graham in developing the Women’s Golf Summits. From the beginning, one of her goals was to increase the membership to 1,000 and with the help of Dana Rader, who served on the Executive Committee with Vollstedt, membership has grown to now almost 1800 members today. Working closely with Kerry Graham, she was instrumental in securing the funds for the LPGA Urban Youth Golf Program, which eventually became the “First Tee” initiative. She was also instrumental in developing the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Program, which has impacted over half a million girls across more than 500 chapters. Vollstedt chaired and served on many committees, hosted the Sectional Seminar, and participated in promoting junior golf. In 1990, she established the ASU Jr Golf Camp for kids aged 10-18, where they would receive instruction, play golf, and learn life lessons. Vollstedt worked closely with Chuck Hogan and Lynn Marriott while she was the Director of Education at Karsten Golf Course. The group dedicated their time to discussing what ideas and materials could be used to influence the performance and well-being of our students. As a result of their work, Marriott went on to be a leader for the LPGA National Education Program. Along with her service to the LPGA, Vollstedt has also been involved with several other organizations promoting golf and sports for women. Being involved with the LPGA allowed her to have a successful career at Arizona State University as the head women’s golf coach from 1980-2001 where she received several prestigious LPGA awards such as the LPGA National Coach of the Year, which she won twice, and LPGA Sectional Coach of the Year. In 2001, she retired from coaching at ASU due to a career ending injury. However, her passion for the game and the love of the sport was still there. She insisted on continuing to give back, coming up with the idea to offer seminars for coaches. Thus, she got involved with “Coaching Fore The Soul”, which allowed her to continue to sharing her wisdom with others. On a national platform, both LPGA and non-LPGA members attended. In 2007, she was asked, along with Kathy Murphy and Debbie Crews, to write the curriculum for the LPGA Professionals National Education Coaching Program. Vollstedt is already a member of 9 Halls of Fame: International Women’s Sports Foundation (WSF); National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA); Arizona Sports HOF; Sun Devil Athletics HOF; Arizona Golf Association; Arizona State University Hall of Honor; Portland Interscholastic League (PIL); Phoenix Union High School (PUHS); and most recently the Pac-12 Conference Hall of Honor – becoming the first female coach to be inducted. Thanks to her lifetime of dedication and service to the game, she can now add LPGA Hall of Famer to the list. “I am truly honored to be selected into the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame and to be included in the elite company of those who have come before me and who have been such incredible role models. During my years of service, I have watched the LPGA continue to grow and offer not only education, but professional growth to women in the organization. My entire life has been dedicated to mentoring, teaching and coaching. I am full of gratitude and joy as I continue to mentor young women who are looking for success and fulfillment in their profession. I am forever grateful to the LPGA for shaping my career and allowing me to fulfill my destiny,” said Vollstedt. Dr. Debbie Crews Debbie Crews has been involved with the LPGA Education, Evaluation and Research programs since 1997 and with the LPGA Professionals since 1980. In 2011, she earned the distinction of Master Professional. Crews has also served on the National Education and Research Advisory Board since its inception and has been a lead National Education Program (NEP) instructor/evaluator since the late 1990s. She assisted with the development and testing of the National Evaluator testing form for teaching, coaching and managerial leadership and contributed to three revisions of the NEP Manual (1997, 2007, 2013). For more than 35 years, Crews has researched and studied the game of golf, writing for countless scientific journals and popular magazines (Golf Digest, Golf Magazine) and being featured on “Scientific American Frontiers,” NBC Dateline and ESPN. Her research also includes several studies with Mayo Clinic on the “yips” in golf. Most recently, she updated and helped create the online version of the Sport Psychology and Neuroscience sections of the program. LPGA section seminars included five “Horses and Courses” (2008-2011) and three “Research Application” seminars (2009, 2018). Crews received the LPGA Ellen Griffin Rolex Award in 2011, the LPGA Central Section Professional of the Year Award in 2012, and the LPGA Western Section Teacher of the Year Award in 2000. She was named a member of the LPGA Top 50 Teachers List in 2008, 2009, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Crews also chaired the World Scientific Congress of Golf for 10 years, where she initiated the research journal “International Journal of Golf Science”. Debbie has worked with golfers from all the tours as well as up and coming amateurs and professionals. “The LPGA Professionals has been very good to me over my career,” said Crews upon hearing the news of her induction. “They are clearly among the top professional organizations I have collaborated with and learned from. To receive the honor of becoming a member of the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame makes me ecstatic. Entering the Hall of Fame with my two best friends Kathy Murphy and Linda Vollstedt is a dream come true. Thank you for believing in me all these years!” Kathy Murphy Kathy Murphy is an LPGA Master Life Professional whose career includes Resident Golf Professional at Palm-Aire Country Club in Sarasota, Fla. and Head Professional at The Plantation Golf & CC in Venice, Fla. where in 1989, she hosted the LPGA Professionals National Championship. Following her time as a club professional, Murphy dedicated herself to the business of teaching and coaching golf. She has been a teaching professional at the Stratton Mountain Golf School in Vermont, Bonnie View Country Club in Baltimore, Md., the Bumble Bee Hollow Golf Center in Mechanicsburg, Pa. (owned and operated by 2009 Hall of Fame Member Lorraine Klippel) and the ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. (where she worked alongside 2016 Hall of Fame Member Lynn Marriott). During her time in Phoenix, Murphy became instrumental in the development and curriculum of the LPGA Global Education and Certification Programs. As Lead Instructor, she assembled and directed a team of professionals in developing curriculum and materials. She also personally conducted over 100 education and training programs around the country and in South Korea. Murphy served for as Chairperson of the Research/Education Advisory Board for ten years, where she met with teachers, LPGA Evaluators and researchers from within and outside the industry to ensure that the LPGA’s education programs remained relevant to members and contributed to the growth of new golfers. Murphy has contributed to the promotion and growth of junior golf, beginning as a Board Member of the Greater Sarasota Golf Association and then as a contributing writer for the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf program, as well as Phoenix Director of the LPGA*USGA Girls Golf Future Stars Program. Murphy served as an officer in the Southeast Section and President of the Northeast Section, as well as presented at numerous LPGA Sectional and National Seminars. She has been recognized for her teaching and leadership skills by Golf Digest, Golf Magazine, Golf for Women Magazine and other various publications including the USGA Journal. “It has been my sincere privilege to participate in the LPGA for more than 40 years – energized by and grateful for the vision of our LPGA Founders, the many dedicated colleagues and enthusiastic students I have met along the way,” said Murphy. “Entering the LPGA Professionals Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of my career and an honor that I will always cherish. Besides being motivated and inspired by all the amazing women who have previously been inducted into the Hall of Fame, I couldn’t be happier and more excited to share this honor with my mentors and valued friends, Linda Vollstedt and Dr. Debbie Crews. MAGE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

PBA West/Northwest Regional Director Gary Mage Announces Retirement Josh Blanchard Named as Successor New York, NY – Gary Mage, who has served as PBA West Regional Director since 2004 and the Northwest Regional Director since he founded it in 1979, has announced his retirement from the PBA after 40+ years of service. Mage’s retirement comes at the end of the 2020 season after a life-long career in the bowling industry and just shy of a milestone 75th birthday, which he’ll celebrate in January. “I’ve been a bowling center owner, pro shop operator and touring player, so I brought a lot of experience to different areas of the sport into this position,” Mage said. “You have people you’ve built relationships with over a span of many years. It’s hard to let go, but it’s time.” In 2004, Mage became Western Region Manager, taking the reins from Mike Friedrichs, and assumed management of the new Northwest Region when it separated from the Western Region in that same year. Mage has since managed both regions with assistance from his wife Toni. Mage will be succeeded by Josh Blanchard, a three-time PBA Tour champion. “After many years serving the PBA as the Northwest and West Regional Director I am very happy that the PBA has chosen Josh Blanchard to take my place, said Mage. “It’s my belief that Josh has the talent to move the regional program forward and build a program that will be successful for many years to come.” Blanchard, who just recently announced his own retirement from full-time PBA Tour competition will take over regional tournament operations on Nov. 9. “It is a privilege to follow in the footsteps of Gary Mage,” said Blanchard. He isn’t easily replaced, but I hope to continue many of the long-standing events he developed over his tenure.” As the new tournament director, Blanchard will be responsible for PBA regional operations in the West and Northwest including developing the schedule of tournaments, pro-ams, and overseeing onsite tournament logistics. “I look forward to working for the bowlers and providing the best events possible for the PBA and its members in the West and Northwest Regions,” added Blanchard. The PBA thanks Mage for his years of hard work and dedication to the organization and wishes him all the best in his future endeavors. While Mage will be missed, the PBA Is very fortunate to have found the perfect fit in Blanchard to fill the position bringing nine-years of full-time touring experience and determination to grow the sport for the next generations of bowlers. AJ Johnson, Nick Pate, Tom Smallwood, Brad Miller Fill Out PBA Playoffs Round of 16 Johnson and Smallwood cruise, Pate and Miller grind into next round Centreville, Va. – AJ Johnson opened his 2020 PBA Playoffs by rolling the highest score on the right-bracket Round of 24 telecast, defeating Kyle Sherman, 223-166. Johnson took an early lead that only grew as the one-game match went on. “You can never be up by too much,” said Johnson. “There’s a respect level and we’re good friends, but I wanted to beat Sherman and never let up. I kept the pressure on and kept throwing great shots.” Johnson, who is seeking his first PBA Tour title, has spent a fair amount of time bowling on TV lately as his PBA League expansion team, Las Vegas High Rollers, advanced all the way to the Elias Cup Finals before finishing second to the Portland Lumberjacks in late September. “I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable on TV,” said Johnson, who will face 2019 PBA Playoffs runner-up Bill O’Neill in the next round. “When the lights come on, it’s game time. I’m starting to come into my own, finding what works and letting myself be me.” In another resounding Round of 24 victory, three-time PBA Tour champion Tom Smallwood began his match with the first three strikes and PBA Hall of Famer Chris Barnes couldn’t keep up, falling by a score of 215-180. “Barnes struggled a bit to start and I threw three pretty good shots for a three-bagger, so I had a 30- or 40-pin lead through the fifth frame,” said Smallwood. “I wasn’t trying to coast, but it kind of looked that way. I had a really bad shot for an eight count and then a couple nine counts. But if you wait around for a Hall of Famer, he’s going to catch you.” Barnes was one of three PBA Hall of Famers, along with Tommy Jones and Norm Duke, to qualify for the 2020 PBA Playoffs. All three were eliminated in the opening round. Smallwood draws 13-time PBA Tour champion EJ Tackett in the Round of 16. The key to Nick Pate’s 207-202 victory over Darren Tang may have been the first frame, when Pate converted a 2-4-10 split. “If I get seven and two there,” said Pate, who followed the conversion with two consecutive strikes, “it’s a 279 max instead of 290. That’s 11 pins. I expect to make that split, and I did, and I was able to settle down and throw some good shots.” Tang started the game with the front three, but after opening in the fourth, neither player was able to put a double on the board. Pate came up in the 10th frame needing a mark and count to win. “I threw one and thought I missed it inside, but it just laid there,” said Pate of his strike in the 10th. “After that, I needed good count and got it. I didn’t throw that many good shots, to be completely honest, but it was a clean game.” Pate advances to face Kyle Troup, who has already won three times on the 2020 PBA Tour. The final match of the telecast was decided by eight well-placed strikes by Brad Miller—four in the front of the game and four in the back. In between, Tom Daugherty caught up and passed Miller, when he chopped a three-pin spare attempt in the eighth frame. After Daugherty failed to strike in the ninth, leaving and sparing a single pin, Miller had a chance to clinch the victory. “When I went up in the ninth frame,” said Miller, brushing aside the chopped spare in the eighth, “I told myself there’s no way I’m leaving a 10-pin. I’m going to get after it, be as aggressive as I possibly can, as long as it doesn’t leave a flat-10.” Miller struck in the ninth and on all three shots in the 10th to lock out Daugherty, 215-195, advancing to the Round of 16 against 10-time PBA Tour champion Jesper Svensson. “A couple breaks went my way,” conceded Miller. “I had a trip-four. When you stay aggressive and actually throw it with confidence, good things like that can happen. I feel very comfortable here with this whole setup and it’s just kind of going my way.” Round of 16 competition airs Sunday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. ET on FS1. The PBA Playoffs concludes with the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship match on Nov. 8 beginning at 2 p.m. ET on FS1. The final event of the 2020 PBA Tour season, the winner of the PBA Playoffs will receive a PBA Tour title, $100,000 and an official WWE championship title.
