Defending Champion Amleto Monacelli Takes

First Round Lead in PBA50 Northern California Classic

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (May 28, 2018) – Defending champion Amleto Monacelli began his PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV title defense by averaging 237.6 to take the first round lead Monday at Harvest Park Bowl.

The PBA Hall of Famer bowled a 1,901 eight-game pinfall total with games of 211, 225, 247, 278, 220, 194, 280 and 246 to take a 57-pin lead over three-time PBA50 Tour titlist Hugh Miller of Mercer Island, Wash., who finished the round with 1,844.

Monacelli beat Miller in the title match of the 2017 Northern California Classic, 229-198, to win his eighth PBA50 Tour title.

“I had to concentrate on throwing the ball soft but not too soft,” Monacelli said of his first round, “I had to be careful not to muscle the ball down the lane because I wouldn’t be able to get the ball reaction I wanted.

“It was important that I observed what the lanes were doing rather than trying to force the ball to do something that wouldn’t be successful,” the 20-time PBA Tour winner added.

The Venezuelan is coming off sixth and seventh place finishes in the last two PBA50 Tour tournaments and feels his game is where it needs to be to make a run at successfully defending his title.

“The last two tournaments I’ve only been a few good shots away from making the finals,” Monacelli said. “If I stay relaxed and continue to make a good read from the lanes it should be another good tournament for me.”

Rounding out the top five after the first round were four-time PBA Tour winner Dennis Horan, Oakley, Calif., 1,830; two-time PBA Tour winner Warren Nelson, Hemet, Calif., 1,821, and Skip Pavone, San Jose, Calif., 1,801.

The entire field returns for another eight-game qualifying round Tuesday which begins at 8 a.m. PT. Wednesday’s cashers and match play rounds will also begin at 8 a.m. After match play the top five players will be determined for the stepladder finals at 6:30 p.m.

PONIES WALK TO VICTORY

Ponies Walk to Victory in Series Finale, 3-2

BINGHAMTON, NY – Binghamton drew three walks in their two-run eighth inning, earning a 3-2 series-ending win against the Bowie Baysox on Monday afternoon. The Rumble Ponies scored first and last on Memorial Day, nabbing three of four from the Baysox in their only NYSEG Stadium set this season. 

Despite scoring first for the first time in five games, Binghamton played from behind for most of the game. The Rumble Ponies broke the seal in the bottom of the third inning when Levi Michael capped a stretch of three straight hits by singling home Tim Tebow. Tebow kick started the third-inning rally by singling up the middle against Baysox starter Jayson Aquino. 

The Ponies advantage was not long lived, as Baysox third baseman Ryan Mountcastle blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence in the top of the fourth inning to give Bowie a 2-1 lead. Mountcastle finished the series with a hit and an RBI in each of the four games, including two home runs.

Marcos Molina was nearly flawless outside of the two-run home run. He tossed a season-high 6-2/3 innings, with a season-best nine strikeouts. He allowed just four hits excluding the fourth frame.

Aquino, meawhile, outlasted Molina and became the second straight Baysox starter to last seven innings. He coughed up just five hits, striking out four with one walk.

Binghamton’s big eighth inning occurred with Luis Gonzalez (1-1) on in relief for Aquino. For the second time in the series, an eighth-inning leadoff single by Jose Garcia would prove to be an important one. Pinch running for Garcia, Champ Stuart swiped second base to put the tying run in scoring position. After Jeff McNeil’s groundout pushed Stuart to third, Peter Alonso’s two-out walk extended the inning. With runners on the corner, Kevin Taylor delivered a game-tying single, plating Stuart from third. After issuing his second walk of the inning to Jhoan Urena, Gonzalez dished out a bases-loaded five-pitch walk to John Mora, giving Binghamton a 3-2 lead.

Eric Hanhold worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up his team-leading eighth save of the season, while David Roseboom (1-0) kept the deficit at one for Binghamton by twirling 1-1/3 frames of scoreless baseball

Frazier Shines as RailRiders Bow to Chiefs, 14-4

4-for-5 day is the third by a RailRider in 2018

MOOSIC, Pa. (May 28, 2018) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders lost to the Syracuse Chiefs 14-4 Monday afternoon at PNC Field. The RailRiders drop three-out-of-four against the Chiefs over Memorial Day Weekend.

The Chiefs jumped on the board early as Jacob Wilson smacked a single to right center bringing homeIrving Falu from third. The RailRiders answered quickly when Mike Ford was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Ryan McBroom hit a sacrifice fly to deep center and Rey Navarro blooped a single over the shortstop to give Scranton/Wilkes-Barre a 3-1 lead after one inning of play.

In the top of the fifth inning, Oliver Pérez relieved Justus Sheffield. The Chiefs ended their scoring drought when Falu walked with two outs, stole second, then advanced to third on a throwing error by Wilkin Castillo. José Marmolejos flared an RBI single over third base to give Syracuse their second run of the game.

The Chiefs took the lead in the top of the sixth. An overthrow by Castillo allowed Jones, the tying run, to score from third. Tuffy Gosewisch then doubled to left-center to score the go-ahead run. They tacked on a few more in the top of the eighth when Móises Sierra singled, Wilson doubled and Hernandez blasted a three-run homerun. Then, in the top of the ninth, Falu, Sierra, and Hernandez each had two-run homeruns, and Decker had an RBI single extending the Chiefs' lead to 14-4. The RailRiders scored a run in the bottom of the ninth when Frazier singled then eventually came around to score on a wild pitch.

For the RailRiders, Sheffield had a solid outing throwing four innings allowing only one run on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Over his four Triple-A starts, the lefty has allowed three runs over 16.1 IP, good for a 1.65 ERA. Frazier had a strong performance going 4-for-5 with two stolen bases -- just the third four-hit game of the season by a RailRider (4/23 vs. Columbus; 4/8 vs. Syracuse)

The RailRiders pile on the bus and head to Louisville for a three-game series beginning Monday night. LHPJosh Rogers (4-3, 2.80) gets the ball for SWB against LHP Cody Reed (0-3, 4.45) for the Bats. The team will then make its way to Indianapolis for another three-game match-up before returning back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre June 5^th to take on the Durham Bulls. SPIEDIES TO BATTLE PORK ROLL

Spiedies to Battle Pork Roll in Sandwich Showdown

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Double-A Subway Series will experience a special twist this year as the Double-A Mets and Double-A Yankees will battle as the Binghamton Spiedies and Thunder Pork Roll in a one-of-a-kind Sandwich Showdown. The Spiedies and Pork Roll will meet on June 8 at ARM & HAMMER Park in Trenton, NJ and June 28 at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, NY.

Binghamton’s spiedies moniker pays homage to the popular local sandwich that originated in Italy and has been a culinary tradition in the area for decades. The Pork Roll is based off “Taylor Ham,” which was started in 1856 by John Taylor in Hamilton Square, NJ. After competition entered the market, Taylor Ham was designated as Pork Roll.

The Spiedies logo features grilled chicken spiedie cubes that have been placed on a wooden bat skewer and served on an open face roll. The team’s jersey features a black top with Spiedies written across the front in Lupo’s Spiedies font, along with a red and white checkerboard border along each sleeve.

Taken from the Garden State staple, the Pork Roll logo features a cartoonish piece of pork roll wearing a backwards navy blue cap. Navy jerseys match the Pork Roll cap, with Pork Roll written across the front in pork roll shaped letters.

MOOSIC, Pa. (May 27, 2018) –  MOOSIC, Pa. (May 27, 2018) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Syracuse Chiefs 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. The victory was the first in the series for the RailRiders.

The Chiefs struck early in the top of the first after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Irving Falu, who then smacked a single that brought in three runs. Chance Adams tossed the shortest outing of his career going two thirds and allowing three runs on one hit, three walks, and a hit batter. J.P. Feyereisen relieved Adams throwing two innings allowing no runs on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the second Ryan McBroom smacked a two-out double and Rey Navarro singled to right to drive in McBroom for the first RailRiders run, making it 3-1.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre continued to battle back as L.J. Mazilli smashed a solo home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the third. Two innings later Clint Frazier came through with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score Mazzilli tying the game for the RailRiders.

The RailRiders took the lead for the first time in the series in the bottom of the sixth inning on a lead-off solo shot by Brandon Drury. However, Syracuse responded quickly, tying up the game in the seventh after a throwing error by Navarro allowed a run to score for the Chiefs.

In the top of the seventh, Drury gave SWB their second lead of the game with an RBI infield single. Shane Robinson added another RailRiders run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. They tacked on one insurance run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single by Wade.

Raynel Espinal earned the win for the RailRiders throwing two innings allowing one run on four hits, and Cody Carroll notched the save going 2.0 innings allowing no runs on no hits. Mazzilli had a successful day at the plate going 3-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Wade extended his hit streak to seven games and Drury added to his on-base streak, now at 20 games.

The RailRiders continue their four-game series with the Chiefs on Monday afternoon at PNC Field. VALLEY FORGE INVITATIONAL RESULTS

RIDDERSTRÖM SHOOTS COURSE RECORD TO WIN VALLEY FORGE INVITATIONAL

POTTSTOWN, Pa. — Entering today’s final round, Louise Ridderström (Stocksund, Sweden) was three shots off the lead, but a competitive course record 8-under par 63 at Raven’s Claw Golf Club this afternoon propelled her to victory at the inaugural Valley Forge Invitational. 

“It’s pretty amazing,” Ridderström said smiling after her first Symetra Tour win. “Even before the round, I knew I had a chance. After I made a birdie on No. 9 and I was 5-under after nine holes, I was like, ‘I have a pretty good chance now.’ In the same way, I was trying to think just stick to what I’m doing.”

Ridderström finished at 16-under par overall and the 8-under score today was a career-low round, besting her previous mark of 6-under set in the second round yesterday. 

With friends by her side and the Swedish Women’s National Team coaching staff in attendance, Ridderström turned in a round for the ages. However, it all came back to one message she recited to herself throughout the final round.

“Winning is hard, but if it’s your turn, then it’s your turn. I was telling myself that all day,” said Ridderström, who won by four strokes. “My one and only goal today was to concentrate on myself and try to hit the best shot that I could possibly hit every single shot. It was just one shot at a time and I think I stuck pretty well to that.”

Exactly one week ago, a fellow Swede in Jenny Haglund (Karlstad, Sweden) won the Symetra Classic in Davidson, N.C., at River Run Country Club. On the bag for the sudden-death playoff was Ridderström. 

The experience may have just provided the motivation she was looking for. 

“Of course, and it made me so happy to see her win,” Ridderström said. “She is a good friend and we also drove all the way from Davidson to here. We talked and I told her it was so amazing because she won a Ladies European Tour (LET) event just a few weeks ago, too. She was like, ‘If I can do it, you can do it too.’ Seeing her win was very inspirational.”

It’s no coincidence then that Haglund was one of the first players standing on No. 18 green today waiting to congratulate Ridderström, and douse her with water. 

“I saw her on top of the leaderboard the whole day,” said Haglund. “That was really exciting and I’m really happy for her. She’s working extremely hard, so it’s great.”

Two weeks off now sit in front of Ridderström, who will travel back to Sweden to attend her sister’s high school graduation. In that time, the winning feeling and how her game has developed is sure not to go anywhere.

“I don’t get to see them very often and to see my sister graduate means a lot to me,” Ridderström said. “I’m not going to lose the momentum. If anything, this gave me more confidence and even more desire to go out and practice and get even better. Now I know it’s possible to win.”

WEARN FINISHES TIED FOR SECOND

For 36-hole leader Laura Wearn (Charlotte, N.C.), today’s final round in the inaugural Valley Forge Invitational was a tough pill to swallow. 

Wearn carded a 1-under par 70 and finished tied for second with Min-G Kim (Cheongju, Republic of Korea) at 12-under par overall, four shots back of winner Louise Ridderström.

“Obviously there is disappointment, not necessarily in where I finished, but I was hoping to play well today,” said Wearn. “I don’t think I had my best game, but Louise went out there and won it. Congratulations to her, she had an awesome tournament. She’s a great person and a great player.”

After 18 holes today, Wearn saw four bogeys, three birdies and an eagle on the scorecard. However, following the first two rounds, it was not the performance she was looking for. 

“I guess some days you just don’t have your best game,” said Wearn. “I tried to be patient, so hopefully next time I’m in this position I can have a better result. The putts didn’t drop and I didn’t hit the same shots I hit the first couple days.”

Even so, there is plenty of positives to take from her week at Raven’s Claw Golf Club, especially heading into the week off for the Furman University alumna. 

“I felt like I was struggling coming into this event,” Wearn said. “To post 12-under is a big confidence booster, motivating me to work harder. Hopefully I can have some good results the rest of the year and finish well.”

VOLVIK RACE FOR THE CARD UPDATE

After the Valley Forge Invitational, there was some changes to the Volvik Race for the Card top-10, including newcomer Louise Ridderström who catapulted up the standings from No. 24 to No. 7 with the win. 

The victory earned Ridderström a $15,000 winner’s share, to move her to $23,064 earned in six events.

“To win and find myself in the top-10 on the Volvik Race for the Card all in one day is spectacular,” said Ridderström. “Now I will need to focus even more to improve my game and hopefully improve my spot in the rankings.”

Meanwhile, Nos. 1-4 did not change. Jenny Haglund maintained her position in the top spot by finishing tied for fourth today at 11-under par overall to receive $4,169. The rest of the group in order pits Dottie Ardina (Laguna, Philippines), Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Illinois) and Vicky Hurst (Melbourne, Florida). 

Furthermore, Stephanie Meadow (Jordanstown, Northern Ireland) and rookie Pajaree Anannarukarn (Bangkok, Thailand) flipped positions, with Meadow moving up to No. 5 and Anannarukarn moving down to No. 6.

Meadow went 7-under par in today’s final round to finish tied for eighth at 10-under par overall, while Anannarukarn ended tied for 34th at 3-under overall.

“It’s great momentum for the rest of the year because I didn’t put it together the first two days, but I did the last,” Meadow said. “I’m happy to move up one place and will now get some rest to be rejuvenated for the June stretch.”

Finally, behind Ridderström from Nos. 8-10 is Lauren Kim (Los Altos, California), Charlotte Thomas (Guildford, England) and Linnea Ström (Hovas, Sweden), respectively.

MOOSIC, Pa. (May 25, 2018) –The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Syracuse Chiefs 10-3 on Saturday afternoon at PNC Field.
 
Adam Warren made a rehab start walking two batters, hitting another two, and allowing a Jason Wilson bases clearing triple before recording an out. Warren threw 30 pitches and was relieved after completing 0.2 innings by Cale Coshow, but the Chiefs had grabbed a 4-0 lead.
 
The RailRiders responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first when Clint Frazier bashed a one-out triple and Brandon Drury knocked him in with an RBI single cutting the deficit to 4-1.
 
Erik Swanson took over for Coshow, throwing 5.0 innings allowing two unearned runs on four hits, one walk, and one strikeout. The runs came home following a bases-empty, two-out error to extend the inning. It was Swanson’s second outing since being called up from Double-A Trenton last week.
 
In the bottom of the third Scranton/Wilkes-Barre loaded the bases thanks to a one-out walk by Frazier and singles by Drury and Ford. A sacrifice fly to deep left field from Kyle Higashioka scored the second RailRiders run.
 
The Chiefs ended their five-inning scoring drought in the top of the sixth when Bengie Gonzalez reached on an error by Rey Navarro. Gonzalez then stole second and was knocked in by Hunter Jones’ double. Irving Falu followed Jones with his own RBI double before Swanson retired Matt Reynolds for the third out of the frame.
 
Syracuse added four runs to their total in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by Yadiel Hernandez, a groundout by Gosewisch, and a two-run homerun by Gonzalez. Chris Smith, Josh Edgin and Jimmy Cordero finished off the win in relief for the Chiefs, combining to throw 3 innings, allowing one run on two hits.
 
Frazier had a solid night at the plate for the RailRiders going 2-for-4 with a walk and two runs scored. Drury was also 2-for-4. With the hits, Drury extended his on-base streak to 19 games, tied for the second-longest active streak in the International League.
