Donald Durland

Durland Scores 7th Career 300

Ever since he recorded his first-ever 300 game during the 2005-2006 season as a youth bowler in the Saturday Morning Youth leagues at Kiamesha Lanes Sullivan County bowlers have watched the steady growth of Wurtsboro bowler Donald Durland.
This now very proficient 20-year-old kegler recorded his seventh career 300 game while subbing October 24 in the Friday Mixed Doubles league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Bowling with Glen Fraser, Kearstin DeGraw and Nancy Fraser, Durland used a Hawg by Hammer bowling ball to record scores of 206, 227, 300, 733 on lanes 5 and 6.
All 12 strikes were in the pocket.
His sixth-career 300 game came on July 30 in the Wednesday Night Mixed Summer league at Colonial Lanes in Chester. On that night he scored a 708 series, which included the 300 and games of 223 and 185 with a Hammer Vibe bowling ball.
In that summer league Donald averaged 200 and bowled with the Killer Angels II team consisting of his mother, Debbie Durland (one of the premier women bowlers in the Tri-County area), Tom Cooney and Pat Cooney.
Durland must like subbing in the Kiamesha Lanes Friday Mixed league because his fifth 300 game was bowled on April 4 of this year in that league using an Ebonite Maxim plastic bowling ball.
His high series of 796 off single games of 268, 249 and 279 was bowled earlier this year in the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
He has been bowling since the age of 5 and averages 216 in the Wednesday Men's league and 214 in the Monday Men's league, both at Kiamesha Lanes.

The Bowling Tip

This tip is for all bowlers regardless of age or level of play.
So very often today bowlers find themselves off balance at the foul line.
While there are many reasons for this, what you may not realize is that most bad finishes are a result of a bad start.
The tip: Check your first step and see if it's too long. This will cause you to push the ball away too far and then your feet will have to play "catch up" to keep you from falling down.
Try a smaller first step next time......it may help.

Ed's Outlook

Tri-County NY USBC Association Manager Michele Bensley is wanting to let league bowlers know that the association computer recently died and a new computer has been purchased but that the USBC Winlabs Program is not yet in total operation so she is far behind and about 30 leagues are waiting for processing. So if your looking for awards or membership cards if will probably be about 2-3 weeks....be patient while she is getting this program up and running.
The Brittany Miller Foundation team tournament and auction will be held at Kiamesha Lanes on Sunday, Novermber 16 at 12 noon. The tournament is both a fund raiser with a prize fund as 1st, 2ed and 3ed place teams will win prize money.
The Brittany Miller Foundation is a Pediatric Cancer Fund.
Four person Mixed teams or any configuration will receive 100 percent handicap based on 220 and you must have verifiable sanctioned averages to win.
The prize fund is based on 16 teams and a second squad at 3:30 will be created if necessary.
There will be raffles and door prizes plus refreshments. Make the "baby split" and win $2 and make any bigger split and win $5. These must be observed by a tournament director.
Entry fee is $100 per team and entry forms are available at Kiamesha Lanes.

Duke Makes History at PBA World Championship
Duke becomes first player in PBA history to win three consecutive Majors

Norm Duke became the first player in PBA history to win three consecutive Majors as he captured the PBA World Championship at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan., last Sunday afternoon, which marks the first event of the 50th Anniversary Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season. Prior to today’s win over 2007-08 PBA Player of the Year Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Tex. (259-189), Duke had won the 2007-08 Denny’s World Championship and the U.S. Open. Today marked his first PBA World Championship title in his 27-year career.
“That (making history) hasn’t hit me,” Duke said. “I was focused on winning the World Championship. When I heard that, it kind of choked me up. It’s a dream and I want to thank my family for standing by me the whole time.”
Duke, of Clermont, Fla., started with the first seven strikes in the championship match, leaving a 10-pin in the eighth frame. Duke shot 259, claiming the title, along with a two-year exemption and $50,000. Meanwhile, Barnes looked shaky as he opened two of the first five frames, never recovering, shooting 189 in the title match.
“The guys are getting real good at being able to all play all parts of the lane. Chris (Barnes) is exceptional playing in and out,” Duke said. “He did a good job of being able to leapfrog between the two. I was fortunate. I was the one who got the strikes.”
Duke now holds 30 total PBA career titles, with six Major wins lifetime. Today marked his 100th singles television appearance. He advanced to today’s final by defeating Wichita resident Sean Rash 236-215 in the first semifinal of the day. Duke struck out in the 10th frame forcing Rash to strike out to tie; however, Rash left a 9-pin in the 10th frame.
Barnes advanced to today’s title match by defeating Steve Jaros (Yorkville, Ill.) 202-181. Jaros had an early lead, but Barnes continued his trend of coming back from a deficit, striking out in the 10th frame to lock out Jaros to advance. Barnes took home the second-place prize of $25,000.
The PBA World Championship took place in Wichita, Kan. at Northrock Lanes. The Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour continues October 28 - November 2 at the Pepsi Viper Championship in Omaha, Neb. 2009 PBA Women’s Series Kicks Off This Week in Omaha
Series grows from four to seven events and includes diverse field

The women take the stage on the PBA Tour this week as the 2008-09 PBA Women’s Series kicks off at the Pepsi Viper Championship at Thunder Alley in Omaha, Neb., Oct. 29-Nov. 2.

The PBA Women’s Series will feature a diverse field including veterans Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Tennelle Milligan, fresh, young faces in Adrienne Miller and Trisha Reid, and international stars Clara Guerrero and Shalin Zulkifli, of Colombia and Malaysia, respectively.

“I think everyone can identify with at least one woman on the tour,” Zulkifli said. “We all have so many different styles and come from different backgrounds.”

The 16 exempt-bowler field was determined at the 2008 PBA Women’s Tour Trials, which were held in conjunction with the 2008 Women’s U.S. Open, a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) event. The top 12 women advanced through the PBA Women’s Tour Trials, while the four winners of last season’s events --- Diandra Asbaty, Dorin-Ballard, Joy Esterson and Shannon Pluhowsky --- received automatic berths.

The 2008 PBA Women’s Series, which is sponsored by the USBC, marks the only opportunity for women to bowl on Tour since the Professional Women’s Bowling Association (PWBA) folded in 2003. Five of the current PBA Women’s Series players were PWBA Alum ---- Dorin-Ballard, Milligan, Brenda Mack, Michelle Feldman and Shannon O’ Keefe.

The PBA Women’s Series, which debuted in 2007, proved to be so popular that the PBA increased the series to seven events as part of the 50th anniversary PBA Tour season.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Dorin-Ballard said. “I think going from four events to seven is definitely a step in the right direction.”

The championship match of each event will be televised live on ESPN as part of the regular PBA Tour telecast. Each PBA Women’s Series event, which will run concurrently with seven Lumber Liquidators’ PBA Tour events, including this week’s Pepsi Viper Championship, will feature a $51,100 prize fund, including a $10,000 top prize.

2008 MISS SULLIVAN COUNTY PAGEANT


MONTICELLO--The Miss Sullivan County Pageant played forth in splendor last Saturday afternoon in the Monticello High School auditorium and crowned a new Miss Sullivan County Teenager, Miss Sullivan County Pre-Teen and Young Miss Sullivan County.
Twenty-four young ladies competed for the three crowns in almost three-hours of competition before a crowd consisting of parents, grand parents, relatives, friends and many pageant supporters.
Seven girls competed for the Young Miss title, 8 girls in the Pre-Teen title and 9 young ladies in the Teenager competition.
Crowned Miss Sullivan County Young Miss was 7-year-old Angel Noelle Hermann, a student in the Sullivan West School District, crowned Sullivan County Pre-Teen was 12-year-old Sarah Carr from the RJK Middle School and crowned Miss Sullivan County Teenager was 15-year-old Ariana Kaminski from the Tri-Valley Central High School.
The three replace 2007 Pageant winners Young Miss Sullivan County Alyssa McCave, Miss Sullivan County Pre-Teen Tasha Curry and Miss Sullivan County Teenager Lauren Katz.
Pre-teen first runner-up was Marina Braddock, second runner-up Alexis Kearns and third runner-up was Brianna Worden.
Teenager first runner-up was Devinne Depuy, second runner-up Jamie Matero and third runner-up was Tabitha Curry.
The five judges were Elizabeth Klimchok, Jane Lawski, Shannon Brown, Michelle Siegel and Joanne McPhillips.
The theme of this years pageant was "Going Green" and each of the teenager contestants was asked the question of what going green meant to them.
Pageant directors include Christina Buckler, Maurice Gerry and Amy Bernhardt.
The pageant has been a popular event in Sullivan County since 1975 when it crowned their first Miss Teenager Debbie Chassis George. Pageant Director Christina Buckler won the pre-teen event in 1994 and Miss Sullivan County Teenager in 1997.
The pageant events included the presentation of all contestants in the opening number, introduction of the three judges, presentation of Young Miss contestants in casual wear, presentation of Pre-Teen contestants in casual wear, presentation of Teenager contestants in casual wear, presentation of Young Miss contestants in formal wear..
Following the intermission there was the presentation of Teenager contestants in formal wear and one minute speech.
There was then the presentation of the Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality Awards, the farewell speech of Young Miss Sullivan County 2007, the crowning of Young Miss Sullivan County 2008, the final question for the teenager finalists, the farewell speech of Miss Sullivan County Pre-Teen 2007, the crowning of Miss Sullivan County Pre-Teen 2008, the farewell speech of Miss Sullivan County Teenager 2007 and the crowning of Miss Sullivan /County Teenager 2008.
Mistress of Ceremonies was Christina Buckler.
Maurice Gerry, as always did an excellent job in directing many of the Pageant activities and thanked parents, relatives and friends of the Miss Sullivan County Pageant for their support and generosity in making this event a reality each year.
The pageant has been described by the directors of the event as a learning experience for all contestants and the girls gain self-confidence, make new friends, share experiences and the very fact that they are competing makes everyone a winner.
Gerry added that he looks forward each year to the "new crop of Sullivan County girls that I get to meet....they are a credit to our community and to all the girls I wish you every happiness, continued success and the joy of knowing you were part of the 2008 Miss Sullivan County Pageant."
He gave special thanks to all of the staff, associates, volunteers and friends and especially thanked assistant directors Christina Buckler and Amy Bernhardt. for "helping to make this pageant a success."

Our Financial Mess & The Elections

Sooner or later I knew that our coffee Klatsch would bring up the topic of what happened on wall street and what our presidential candidates are saying.
Understanding that our Klatsch is not political.....we do have four members who are Republicans, three who are Democrats and one Independent.
In our attempt to properly analyze the financial collapse we all were in one accord when we concluded that the answer for the financial panic and collapse lies both with America's financial elite and the political elite of both Democrats and Republicans.
What we also felt was quite scary is the fact that these same so called elites are now working to see how much of our wealth is needed to bail us out.
The Klatsch members totally endorsed their opposition to this bailout of some of America's biggest corporation by you and me (the American taxpayer.
This whole mess was generated by the greed and arrogance of those who sought to make a quick buck and Wall Street played a significant part.
Calling a spade a spade we feel that the members of Congress should bear a large share of the blame and now they are pretending to come to our rescue. Think about that will you....and lets not forget that warning signs were given by a number of concerned members of Congress but this was over shadowed by Fannie and Freddie who spent millions lobbying Congress over the past decade.
As we poured our second cup of home made java and bit into our freshly baked donuts several of our members spoke out about a high number of the "elite" media who desperately seek to avoid the guilt of the left for the current crisis.
We agreed that this entire economic downfall is both the fault of Republicans and Democrats in Washington but that the liberal left media has made Barack Obama look better with these issues then John McCain.
Obama promises to change America and strongly opposes Bush's tax cuts for the rich and instead will offer tax cuts for the working families. He is pledging quality and affordable health care for all while McCain asks who is going to pay for this?
We all agreed that Obama is an attractive, intelligent and eloquent candidate but several in our Klatsch felt that this is where it ends and his associates are great cause for concern.
McCain says Obama will increase taxes and is urging voters to hold onto their wallet. He says voters could not rely on Obama's promise of tax cuts. The Republican candidate supports an energy abundance plan and a promise of a $5,000 per-family health-care tax credit tax to help pay for their health insurance.
Our Klatch unanimously agreed that tax proposals must be studied so taxes do not increase, health care should be within every ones reach, the Wall Street crisis should results in intense investigations and penalties, fines and even prison terms for those who brought this great country down on their knees, there must be concrete plans to develop an energy abundance plan, that Americans are sick and tired of big government and big cronyism, that our nation must remain strong in their efforts to fight terrorism, that small business and free markets are better than bureaucrats and socialism, that the majority of Americans are fed up with the corruption, dishonesty and arrogance of Washington and that all of us are eager to have someone honestly address the concerns we are faced with today.

There Is No High School Bowling in Sullivan County

Bowling was the largest-growing high school sport in the 2007-08 school year, continuing a decade-long trend, according to the most recent National Federation of State High School Associations participation survey.....but to this date there is no high school bowling leagues in Sullivan County.
New York State is the top participating state with more than 8,000 bowlers competing in high school programs.
Sullivan County does have several active Saturday youth leagues for pre-teens and teenagers but no high school bowling leagues.
More than 52,000 students competed at the 4,656 schools offering high school bowling competition in 2007-08, representing a 16 percent increase from the 45,064 bowlers who participated during the 2006-07 school year.
"The sustained growth of high school bowling is great news for the bowling industry as it increases the number of competitive opportunities and enhances bowling's image," said United States Bowling Congress Director of Youth Development Brian Graham. "Over the past 10 years, we have witnessed significant growth at the high school level and we expect to see this trend continue."
In the last decade, bowling participation has nearly tripled. During the 1998-99 school year, 17,930 students competed in bowling at 1,633 schools.
In 2007-08, varsity programs were offered in 20 states and 52,226 students participated in the sport. The sport also passed the 25,000 mark for both boys and girls participation with 26,652 boys participating at 2,298 schools and 25,614 girls participating at 2,358 schools.
"USBC is excited to continue our partnership with the NFHS to encourage the growth of high school bowling throughout the country," said USBC High School Manager Breanne Eoff. "Bowling is a great addition for any high school. It reaches a wider range of student-athletes than traditional high school sports and teaches teamwork, preparation and commitment."
States offering varsity bowling for boys and girls in 2007-08 were Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. Iowa and Washington offered girls varsity programs only, South Carolina had private school varsity programs, and Minnesota offered adaptive bowling for students with physical or cognitive disabilities.
The USBC High School program works to continue this upward trend by guiding all levels of high school bowling, providing rules and instructional opportunities. USBC High School offers a free membership program, which enables coaches to nominate outstanding bowlers to the national Dexter/USBC High School All-American Team, and provides high-score recognition to student-athletes. Coaches also receive resource materials such as the USBC Coaches Guidebook and USBC High School guide.
Bowling not only offers inexpensive start-up and maintenance costs but also allows students an opportunity to become involved with their high schools, lays the foundation for a lifetime sport and helps athletes earn scholarships and bowl in college.
The United States Bowling Congress High School program actively offers guidance to all levels of high school bowling by providing rules, instructional opportunities, awards and industry resources to ensure the success of high school bowling nationwide. USBC High School is a resource for school administrators, high school state athletic associations, state proprietor associations and industry member organizations in the creation and maintenance of high school bowling programs.

EBONITE INTERNATIONAL WELCOMES CHRIS HANS

Chris Hans has been appointed the new Ebonite International, Inc. district sales manager (DSM) for the Mid-Atlantic region (MD, DE, WV, VA, NC and southern PA), announced Scott McMillan, national field sales manager for the company. Hans will serve pro shop and distributor customers in the territory previously served by Shawn Morris, now the company’s southwest region DSM. “Chris understands both the consumer and the business side of the pro shop business which is an added benefit for our customers because he knows what it is like to be on both sides of the game,” said McMillan. “His vast knowledge will allow him to provide the best service possible for our brands while also putting his equipment, sales, financial and marketing expertise to work for his customers.” Hans joins the company from AMF Bowling Centers, Inc. where he has served as the league marketing manager overseeing promotions in more than 300 bowling centers. Also a former pro shop owner and operator as well as bowling center manager, Hans was an Ebonite regional amateur staff member from 2000-2006 and an Ebonite Demo Day operator in 2002 and 2003.
