Juanita Weber, Matriarch of PBA’s Most Famous Family, Dies at Age 89

 Juanita Weber, wife of the late Professional Bowlers Association legend Dick Weber and matriarch of the PBA’s most famous family, died at a St. Louis assisted living center late Monday night. She was 89.

Juanita Weber, born on August 28, 1930k, had been in declining health for some time. She was the mother of long-time PBA Midwest Region manager Rich Weber, daughter Paula Darmon, Director of PBA50 and PBA Regional Tours John Weber and 37-time PBA Tour champion and Hall of Famer Pete.

Juanita and Dick Weber had met in a bowling center when both were teenagers. According to the story she later told her children, Juanita went to the bowling center with a girl friend to watch a guy named Curt Heady bowl league. Her father, she had said, didn’t want her going to the “bowling alley” back then because “nice girls don’t hang out in bowling alleys.”

According to her story, her future husband approached her and said, “Don’t I know you?” That inconspicuous beginning grew into something much more serious after Dick bowled in the American Bowling Congress Championships Tournament, won some money and returned to Indianapolis with marriage on his mind. They were too young to be married without parental consent but got permission and were married in Indianapolis on Dick’s birthday, December 23, 1948.

Dick and Juanita moved to St. Louis shortly thereafter, where Dick joined the famous Budweisers of St. Louis and launched one of the most successful careers in bowling history.

Juanita also bowled. “I never bowled a 300 game, but I did win a state title,” she had said.

But her greatest claim to fame was her behind-the-scenes role as advisor and manager one of the most decorated families in bowling history. The legacy she leaves behind includes son Richard (Sue) Weber, Jr., daughter Paula (Jeff) Darmon, son John (Chris) Weber and son Peter (Renee) Weber; grandchildren Lisa, Brian, Nicole, Ashley-Marie, Nick, Ryan, Joshua, and Stacy; great-grandchildren Avery, Austin, Isla, Kaisen, Kamila, Leo, Hattie and Eli; and sister-in-law Sharon (Jim) Nizzola.

In keeping with family tradition and her wishes, Juanita Weber will be cremated. No funeral services will be held. The family asks that any memorials in her honor be donated to the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, 621 Six Flags Drive, Arlington, TX 76011.

Renegades Announce Complete 2020 Promotional Schedule

Combining annual fan favorites, new themes and giveaways, the 2020 season will have something for everyone this summer at Dutchess Stadium.

WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY – The Hudson Valley Renegades, Short Season Class-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, announce their complete 2020 promotional schedule. This year’s calendar highlights six giveaways, a post-game concert, a wine and craft beer fest, 11 fireworks shows and the coveted Bobblection event; a staple and exclusive giveaway of the Goldklang group, which has correctly predicted the winner of each election since its inception. 

Individual game ticket sales begin on Saturday, April 11 at 10:00 AM, and the first pitch at Dutchess Stadium will be thrown just 74 days later on June 24. The Magic is Back on Opening Day, a game you won’t want to miss!  It will feature all of the excitement of Opening Day along with a 2020 Magnet Schedule giveaway!

Giveaways

The first giveaway for 2020 will be on Opening Day, Wednesday, June 24 for the first 2,000 fans through the gates. Those fans will receive a 2020 Magnet Schedule. To celebrate the first Friday night fireworks, display on June 26, the first 2,000 fans that night will also receive a 2020 Magnet Schedule.

Throwing it back 25 years, Rick Zolzer was the first PA announcer to ever be ejected from a Minor League Baseball game. The Renegades are commemorating that event on Thursday, August 6 by giving away 1,000 “Zolz Ejection” Bobbleheads!

Meet and greet the 2020 Renegades team on Sunday, August 16 after the game to have them sign their baseball card. The first 1,000 fans in the ballpark will receive a complete team card set.

Saturday, August 22 is Strike Out Cancer Night. Northern Westchester Hospital and the Renegades are teaming up to give away 1,000 Save Second Base T-Shirts. The T-shirt giveaway will be a one-size offering, in Adult X-Large.

Stay cool but still in style with a Renegade logoed bucket hat, presented by M&O Sanitation on Sunday, August 23. This will be a conversation piece to wear whenever you leave the house, so make sure you are one of the first 1,000 fans in line at the gate.

Specialty Events

The Renegades kick-off their inaugural year as part of MiLB’s Copa de la Diversion program to assume the identity of Fenomenos Enmascarados (“The Masked Phenoms”) for four games this season.  In celebration of all of the Hispanic communities throughout the Hudson Valley and the Lucha Libre culture, the Renegades staff are striving to provide fans a rich blend of outstanding spirit and showmanship at the ballpark.

The Renegades will wear their new alternative uniforms on Tuesday, July 7 for a Soccer themed night, Saturday, July 18 to celebrate Carnival, the Latino culture’s version of Mardi Gras, Friday, August 14 for a Caribbean Night and Sunday, August 30, a night to celebrate Mexican Heritage.

Wear your crowns or throw on your mask and capes for Princess and Heroes Night on Sunday, July 19. There will be a specialty princess tea party and hero meet and greet before the game. Specialty ticket packages will be available for purchase which will include a tiara and wand or hero cape.

The Renegades are taking a play out of the hockey arena and attempting their first ever Teddy Bear Toss on Saturday, July 25. Fans are asked to bring as many, new stuffed animals to throw on the concourse at a designated time during the game to then be collected and donated to Toys-for-Tots.

The Renegades have partnered with Benmarl Winery to host a Wine Fest on Wednesday, August 5. The Craft Beer Guild of the Hudson Valley is back again for the Third Annual Craft Beer Fest at Dutchess Stadium in conjunction with Country Night on Saturday, August 15. The Renegades are thankful to all of the essential workers who went above and beyond their calls of duty during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  As a thank you, we will be hosting an Essential Workers Week from August 11-16, highlighting businesses and employees from around the Hudson Valley.

USBC COLLEGIATE CONCURS WITH DECISION OF MAJOR ORGANIZATIONS REGARDING ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY

ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress Collegiate Division will not extend eligibility for student-athletes who had their 2019-2020 bowling postseason cut short because of COVID-19 public health concerns.

The decision by USBC Collegiate follows the decision of major collegiate athletic associations, including the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), to grant an eligibility waiver only to student-athletes in spring sports.

USBC Collegiate announced the postponement of the Intercollegiate Singles and Team Sectionals on March 12. After determining there was no available timeframe to conduct the collegiate postseason events, USBC announced the cancellation of the Intercollegiate Team and Singles Championships on March 18.

TWELVE YOUTH BOWLERS RECEIVE GIFT FOR LIFE SCHOLARSHIP

ARLINGTON, Texas – Twelve United States Bowling Congress Youth members have been selected by the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee to receive a Gift For Life Scholarship.

The Gift For Life Scholarships are presented annually to youth bowlers who currently are in high school and can demonstrate financial need. Applicants are selected based on submitted applications, must have a grade-point average of 2.5 or higher (based on a 4.0 scale) and provide at least two letters of recommendation.

Each award winner receives a $1,000 scholarship managed through the SMART program.

The Gift For Life Scholarship recipients for 2020 are:

• Katelin Bostian, Salisbury, North Carolina – A senior at Jesse C. Carson High School, she is ranked eighth in her class of 274. She has volunteered at numerous events through Key Club, which she serves as treasurer, and is the president of the International Thespian Society.
   
• Denver Boxleitner, Cape Coral, Florida – The Island Coast High School junior is a member of the varsity bowling and tennis teams. She has volunteered with Take Stock in Children and the Northwest Cape Coral Regional Library.
   
• Lyndsey Capps, Colorado Springs, Colorado – The Doherty High School 10th grader is taking honors courses in algebra, engineering, English and history. She has been a 4H member since 2014, volunteered with Care and Share, sorting canned food, and the annual Alzheimer’s Walk. She also served meals through her church.
   
• Rhett Fullhart, West Point, Iowa – A senior at Holy Trinity Catholic High School, he is involved in the chess, music and theatre clubs, and competes in bowling, golf, baseball and trap. He volunteers at the local food pantry and through his church.
   
• Ryan Hanzak, Concord Township, Ohio – A junior at Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, he is a member of the bowling, golf and basketball teams, and a school ambassador. He volunteers through his church, worked at the local library book sale and ran a clothing drive.
   
• Victoria Hoffman, Stillwater, Oklahoma – A Stillwater High School senior, she served as committee chair for Stillwater Makes a Change, a student-led group that raised more than $350,000 for a local nonprofit organization. She made state band, and was in Unified Peers, Beta Club and Key Club.
   
• RJ Hooper, Enid, Oklahoma – The Enid High School senior’s community service includes working with Mission Enid, which included building multiple handicap ramps, clearing limbs after ice storms, and doing home repairs for low-income families. He is in the school orchestra and competes in bowling and track.
   
• Waylon Metts, Louisville, Kentucky – The St. Xavier High School senior earned the rank of Eagle Scout last fall after completing his project with Norton Children's Hospital. He is a National Honor Society member and a four-year member of the bowling team.
   
• Tyler Seeley, Parker, Colorado – A senior at Legend High School, he is in the bowling and calculus clubs, and in the school orchestra. He volunteered with the Parker Task Force, assisting in the food bank warehouse, and did meal prep for Feed My Starving Children.
   
• Trinity Stuart, Westminster, Colorado – A senior at Jefferson Academy, she has taken honors courses in English, biology, algebra, history and chemistry. She is a member of the golf and bowling teams and has volunteered with the Kiwanis Pins for Kids benefit and the Beat The Amateur scholarship fundraising golfing event.
   
• Ashton Wardrup, Santa Fe, Texas – A senior at Santa Fe High School, he has volunteered with Special Olympics and has been involved with the Texas and Greater Houston USBC Youth Leaders. He is a four-year member of the high school bowling team.
   
• Brandon White, Canton, Illinois – The senior at Canton High School, who recently completed his Eagle Scout project, has worked numerous community service projects through the Boy Scouts. In addition to league bowling, he is a four-year member of the varsity soccer team.

Each year, two of the Gift For Life scholarships are reserved for the children of fire department, emergency rescue or police personnel. This year, the fathers of Hoffman and Fullhart both serve as police officers.

SYMETRA TOUR STATEMENT ON UPCOMING SCHEDULE
 

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – As the Symetra Tour continues to monitor and assess the global outbreak of COVID-19, the next five events on the Symetra Tour schedule are postponed: the IOA Invitational in Milton, Ga., from May 7-9; the Symetra Classic in Davidson, N.C., from May 13-15; Zimmer Biomet Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez in Opelika, Ala., from May 20-23; The CDPHP Open in Albany, N.Y., from May 29-31; and Four Winds Invitational in South Bend, Ind., from June 12-14.

Meanwhile, two events have been rescheduled. The IOA Championship presented by Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, originally scheduled for March 27-29, will now be played from Aug. 21-23 in Beaumont, Calif., and the Four Winds Invitational will now be played from July 31 through Aug. 2 at Blackthorn Golf Club. Furthermore, the Windsor Golf Classic, originally scheduled for April 2-4 in Windsor, Calif., will remain postponed until 2021.

“The Symetra Tour is only as good as its partners,” said Mike Nichols, the Chief Business Officer of the Symetra Tour. “We are grateful for IOA, Morongo Casino Resort & Spa, and the City of Beaumont, as well as the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi and its Four Winds Casinos for working with us to find times that work to bring professional golf to their respective regions. They’ve kept the dream alive for players, as there’s no ‘Road to the LPGA’ if there’s no competition. We couldn’t be more thankful for their loyalty to the Symetra Tour and complete dedication to women’s professional golf.”

The Symetra Tour team is in consistent communication with tournament title sponsors and the venues to find suitable weeks in the latter part of the season to reschedule postponed events. More information will be shared as plans are finalized.

Finally, the LPGA and Symetra Tour Qualifying Tournament timeline is being restructured. Stage I will no longer take place Aug. 20-23 at Mission Hills Country Club and Shadow Ridge Golf Club in Coachella Valley, Calif., and will instead be contested on the Bobcat and Panther Courses of Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., from Oct. 12-15. Details are being finalized to add a third course to this location and the competition format will remain the same.

Stage II will no longer take place in its originally scheduled time frame, as Stage I now fits in the calendar on those dates. It will be rescheduled for November on two courses at a to-be-announced location, with no change to the format. Additionally, the third annual LPGA Q-Series presented by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina will not be held at Pinehurst Resort and will be rescheduled at a different venue for December. The format will be altered and span only one week, featuring 90 holes of competition on two courses and a cut after 72 holes.

At this time, criteria for all three stages essentially remains the same as in previous years. An entry open date of August 1, 2020 has also been set for both Stage I and Stage II. If there are further adjustments to the LPGA and Symetra Tour schedules, there may be additional changes to the qualifying tournament.

KENTUCKY YOUTH BOWLER NAMED CHUCK HALL STAR OF TOMORROW

ARLINGTON, Texas – Ryan Gatton of Owensboro, Kentucky, has been selected as the 2020 Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Award winner by the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee.

The annual award recognizes star qualities in a United States Bowling Congress Youth member, including distinguished bowling performances on the local, state and national levels, academic achievement and community involvement. Applicants must be a male high school senior or college student.

Gatton receives a $6,000 scholarship as this year’s award recipient.

“Receiving this award is proof that my hard work has paid off and I am honored to have been chosen,” Gatton said. “I have worked extremely diligently in both bowling and academics to get to where I am now, and this award is a vindication of that. It is special to me because bowling and school have been huge parts of my life and to receive a scholarship for those two things that I love to do is amazing.”

A senior at Apollo High School, Gatton has a 4.0 grade-point average (4.27 weighted) and has taken Advanced Placement courses in biology, environmental science, calculus, statistics, English language and English Literature, history and European history, in addition to dual-credit classes.

He was recognized as an AP Scholar in 2018 and received the AP Scholar with Distinction Award for the 2018-2019 school year. He also was the recipient of the 2019 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.

His volunteer projects as a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club include serving at the Cliff Hagan Boys and Girls Club. For the last four years, he volunteered at the Special Olympics Bowling regional event.

A bowler since age 4, he previously served as a youth board member with the Owensboro Bowling Association. He reached a personal goal by rolling a 300 game in March of 2019.

Gatton helped start the bowling program at Apollo High School and was team captain for the 2019-2020 season. A Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Academic All-State selection each year, he was named the 2019-2020 Midway University/KHSAA Male Bowling Student-Athlete of the Year.

He plans to attend Western Kentucky University in the fall and major in education.

“Many teachers have had a huge impact on my life, so I plan to pay that forward,” Gatton said. “I plan on becoming a high school English teacher.”

The International Bowling Campus (IBC) is the headquarters for the bowling industry and directly serves the more than 69 million bowlers in the United States. The IBC houses the resources of the United States Bowling Congress, the governing body and membership organization for the sport; the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America, representing the business interests of bowling centers; IBC Youth Development; Strike Ten Entertainment, the marketing arm for the industry; the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame; the International Bowling Pro Shop and Instructors Association; the International Bowling Media Association; the Bowling News Network; the Billiard and Bowling Institute of America; and the International Training and Research Center.
