Rochester, N.Y. – Closed by one of the franchise’s most dominant relief performances of all-time, the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) beat the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) on Sunday, 3-1, and secured the franchise’s seventh playoff appearance in a decade as the Yankees’ top affiliate. Reliever Jonathan Holder closed the game by striking out 12 of the 13 men he faced including 11 in a row for a storybook save. The RailRiders’ (84-51) pitching staff combined for 22 strikeouts while the Red Wings (76-60) scored just one unearned run.

In his first outing after he was activated from the Yankees’ 60-day disabled list and optioned to SWB, Bryan Mitchell overcame a slow start to strike out eight over 3.2 innings at the start. He allowed one unearned run thanks to his own throwing error in the first inning.

Former Red Wing Chris Parmelee tied the game with a solo homer in the fourth.  He gave his club the lead with a single to center in the sixth and scored when the next pitch was tripled to right by Donovan Solano.

Tyler Webb (4-3) recorded the win with 1.1 scoreless innings of relief and Holder earned his sixth save.

The series concludes at 7:05 p.m. on Monday night as right-hander Brady Lail (6-5, 4.79) faces Tyler Duffey (0-0, 1.72).

The team returns home on Friday, Sept. 2 to host the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto Blue Jays). The Glow-in-the-Park Friday will see the team sport its neon green and black jerseys. And the first 2,500 fans will receive a Friday Night replica jersey courtesy of PNC Bank. Game 12 of the 2016 Legends Series will have former Yankee Graig Nettles in attendance thanks to Maines Food and Party Warehouse and Mohegan Sun Pocono. It will be Penn State Night at PNC Field with a post-game Jack Williams Tire and Auto and Yokohama Tire Fireworks Show. B-METS LOSE 5-0

B-Mets Stranded at Bay in Bowie, 5-0

BOWIE, MD – The Binghamton Mets left 10 runners on base in a 5-0 loss to the Bowie Baysox on Saturday night at Prince George’s Stadium. The B-Mets went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position in their eighth shutout loss of the season.
Glynn Davis opened the scoring for the Baysox by belting a two-run homer off B-Mets spot-starter Logan Taylor in the second inning. Bowie stretched their lead with a three-spot in the fifth against B-Met relievers Alberto Baldonado and Luis Mate.
The five-run cushion proved to be plenty for Bowie starter David Hess (5-12). The righty snapped a six-game winless slump with the victory. Hess scattered six hits and stranded eight runners over six scoreless innings to earn his second win since June 7.
Binghamton had several chances against Hess, but failed to break through with a timely hit. Maikis De La Cruz struck out to leave the bases loaded in the second and fanned again in the fourth to leave two more aboard.
Major League rehabber Brian Duensing tossed two scoreless innings before Bobby Bundy fired a perfect ninth.
Taylor (4-2) walked four and surrendered two runs on four hits in the loss, his first defeat as a starter this season.

Moosic, Pa. – The Rochester Red Wings pushed across a run in the top of the 11th inning and held on to defeat the SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/ New York Yankees) 5-4. The Red Wings (76-59) have won three straight against the RailRiders (83-51) and lead the season series 8-7.

Jake Reed (1-1) took home the win with two scoreless innings and Edward Mujica held the RailRiders off in the final frame for his 24th save. Nick Goody shouldered the loss after allowing a run on two hits and three walks in one inning of work.

Rochester starter Nick Greenwood spun six no-hit innings while the Red Wings built a 4-0 lead. With two out in the seventh, though, the RailRiders’ offense came to life. Chris Parmelee doubled and scored when Kyle HIgashioka launched a towering home run to deep left.

SWB tied the game in the eight on a double by Mason Williams and a sacrifice fly to left by Parmelee.

Rochester loaded the bases against Goody in the top of the 11th on a walk to Kenny Vargas, a single by Adam Brett Walker and an intentional free pass to Daniel Palka. Wilfredo Tovar worked a base on balls to push across Walker for a 5-4 lead. James Pazos entered and whiffed the final two batters to end the threat.

Parmelee opened the last of the final frame with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Pete Kozma. Pinch hitter Donovan Solano scorched a single to center and Kozma raced to third. Mujica settled in to strikeout Jake Cave and Cito Culver to end the game.

The RailRiders’ lead in the International League North Division is now four with nine games left to play. SWB seeks a playoff berth when they battle the Rochest Red Wings on Sunday, August 28 at Frontier Field. Right-hander Bryan Mitchell (0-1, 6.75, A/A+/AA) makes his first start for SWB in 2016. to Earn Second Consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year Crown

Ohio’s Eddie Graham wins Rookie of the Year, Ron Mohr earns PBA60 Player of the Year honors

CHICAGO – Despite missing four of 13 tournaments, Pete Weber put together the most dominant season since the Professional Bowlers Association started its division for players 50 years of age and older in 1981.

Weber, who turned 54 on Aug. 21, earned his second consecutive PBA50 Player of the Year crown thanks to winning a record six tournaments in 2016, including a record string of four in a row. Among his six wins were two majors – his second consecutive Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global and his second USBC Senior Masters title, his first coming in his rookie season of 2013.

Bowling in nine tournaments, his string of four consecutive wins included the PBA50 UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages presented by Radical, PBA50 Mooresville Ford Open presented by Columbia 300 and Miller High Life, and the PBA50 Johnny Petraglia BVL Open presented by Brunswick leading up to his Senior U.S. Open win. His sixth win came in the PBA50 South Shore Open presented by DV8.

Weber also had second-place finishes in the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV and the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm, and a fourth-place in the season-opening Pasco County Florida Open, which was his lowest finish of the season.

“Don’t get me wrong, I threw the ball well this year but I have to admit I got a lot of breaks this year and it seemed like my opponents got the bad breaks,” said Weber. “It was just one of those years. I hated to miss those last three tournaments because there was probably another title there somewhere.”

Weber’s season ended prematurely because of a nagging hip injury that he hopes won’t be a factor as he gets ready for the upcoming PBA Fall Swing that starts over the Labor Day weekend in suburban Detroit.

“It’s in good shape now after going to the doctor and not bowling for a while,” Weber said. “I’ll probably take another week off and have my brother Rich do a little analysis of how I’m throwing the ball and just go from there.” 

With his six wins, Weber ran his career PBA50 Tour win total to 10 which puts him in a tie with Walter Ray Williams Jr. for fourth place on the all-time PBA50 Tour titles list. John Handegard is the leader with 14 titles.

Winning POY with 457,200 points, nearly twice Amleto Monacelli’s 241,680 second-place total, Weber also led two other statistical categories by whopping margins. He averaged a record 237.03 for 265 games and took home $73,200 in earnings.

“I had some pretty good years on the PBA Tour where I won multiple titles and made a lot of shows but winning (PBA50) Player of the Year two years in a row ranks right up there with what I was able to accomplish on the ‘kids’ tour,” said Weber, who never won player of the year on the regular tour. “The atmosphere is a little different on the PBA50 Tour than it is on the regular tour but I can tell you, nobody’s intimidated.”

Weber’s closest competitor in earnings was Monacelli with $38,775. Monacelli was the only other multiple winner in 2016, capturing two titles, the PBA50 Fountain Valley Open presented by Track and the PBA50 National Championship to Benefit Riley Hospital for Children for his seventh PBA50 title and fourth major.

Norm Duke, the winner of the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship for his third PBA50 Tour title and second major, finished second in average, nine pins behind Weber with 228.31.

Other players winning titles in 2016 were hall of famers Williams (Pasco County Florida Open), Brian Voss (Dave Small’s Championship Lanes Classic presented by Roto Grip) and newcomers Noel Vazquez (Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV) and Eddie Graham Jr. (DeHayes Insurance Group Championship presented by Pro Bowl West and Ebonite). Voss, Vazquez and Graham were all first-time PBA50 Tour winners.

With their wins on the PBA50 Tour, Weber and Williams also edged closer to the 100 overall PBA titles mark with both players currently sitting at 99, including PBA Tour, PBA Regional, PBA50 Tour and PBA50 Regional titles.

As the top rookie in points, Graham, a five-time PBA Regional titlist including the 2007 Regional Players Invitational, earned Rookie of the Year honors.

Graham cashed in the last nine consecutive tournaments of the season and won his first PBA50 Tour title in the DeHayes Insurance Group Championship.

With his big finish, Graham also moved into eighth place on the season-long competition points list to qualify for the PBA50 Challenge which will be contested on Nov. 27 and aired live on Xtra Frame as part of the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VIII in Reno. Graham will join Weber, Monacelli, Duke, Williams, Voss, Parker Bohn III and Mohr in the eight-game round robin match play event. All eight also earned paid entries to compete in WSOB VIII.

Mohr, in earning PBA60 Player of the Year honors, had six PBA50 top-five finishes and eight top five’s, including the ITRC Super Senior Classic and PBA60 Dick Weber Championship presented by Hammer, which were limited to players 60 years and older.

Among Mohr’s top finishes were second-place finishes in the UnitedHealthcare Sun Bowl In The Villages and the Dick Weber Championship.

Winning the “super senior” events were Don Sylvia, capturing the Dick Weber Championship title, and Junichi Yajima winning the ITRC Super Senior Classic.

In addition to Weber, Monacelli, Duke, Williams and Bohn will return to action against the younger generation in the PBA Fall Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. Sept. 4-11.

PBA FALL SWING QUALIFIER SET FOR SATURDAY IN ALLEN PARK

Non-members and PBA members who live within 50 miles will have a one-time opportunity to compete for 10 entries into the PBA Fall Swing by entering the Fall Swing Pre-Tournament Qualifier on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Thunderbowl in Allen Park, Mich.

Entry into the Fall Swing PTQ is $120. All-inclusive entry fees for the Fall Swing are $750. The Fall Swing, set for Sept. 4-11, will include the Wolf, Bear, Badger and Detroit Open title events plus a King of the Swing special event to conclude the program.

TACKETT HOLDS 10-POINT LEAD IN XTRA FRAME PBA TOUR POINTS RACE

By picking up 13 points for his eighth place finish in the PBA Tour Xtra Frame Gene Carter’s Pro Shop Classic Sunday in Middletown, Del., E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., improved his lead in the Xtra Frame PBA Tour competition points race to 10 points over Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., who earned 10 points for finishing 11th.

After five of eight events in the race for the $10,000 winner-take-all points competition, Tackett has 66 points followed by Jones’ 56, Ryan Ciminelli and Sean Rash (44 each), Anthony Simonsen (42), Kyle Troup (40), Shawn Maldonado (36), Jason Sterner (34), Dick Allen (33) and Bill O’Neill (31).

The remaining events in the series are the Xtra Frame Parkside Lanes Open in Aurora, Ill., Oct. 1-2; the Xtra Frame Reality Check Classic from Sawgrass Lanes in Tamarac, Fla., Oct. 8-9, and the Xtra Frame Las Vegas Open from South Point Bowling Plaza, Oct. 29-30. In each event, the winner earns 25 points, second place 19, third place 18, etc., declining by one point through 20th place.

QUBICA AMF PBA REGIONAL UPDATE:  KENT WINS LONGEST-RUNNING PBA REGIONAL

Marshall Kent of Yakima, Wash., posted an 10-5-1 match play record and a 24-game total of 5,810 pins Sunday to win his fourth QubicaAMF PBA Regional title in the PBA Dave Husted Northwest Open presented by 900 Global at Husted’s Milwaukee Bowl.

Kent, who earned $2,000, defeated Craig Tuholski of Troutdale, Ore., by 61 pins for the win. Tuholski had an 11-5 match play record and 5,749 pins for his 24 games, including match play bonus pins.

The tournament was the 37th annual regional hosted by the Husted family at the family-owned Milwaukie Bowl. It’s the longest running regional in the PBA.

● Collegiate bowler Justin Bui from Terrytown, La., dominated the non-champion field to win the PBA Bowling Dynamix Houston Emerald Bowl Challenge, presented by Hammer, Sunday in Houston, Texas, after Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova topped the PWBA/PBA Houston Emerald Southwest Women’s Open field on Saturday.

Bui, who finished the 21-game tournament with a 6-2 match play record and 4,990 total pins, started the modified eight-game round-robin finals with a 232-pin lead over fellow non-member Adam Martinez of San Antonio, Texas, and continued his supremacy to win by 316 pins over Jacob Heger of Spring, Texas, to claim the $2,400 first place check. Because Bui also is a non-member, he doesn’t receive credit for a PBA title.

On Saturday, Zavjalova, who is now living in Austin, Texas, survived a late rush by Colombia national team bowlers Anggie Ramirez and Clara Guerrero who also live in Austin. After Zavjalova finished the eight-game event with 1,681 total pins, she had to wait and watch as both challengers had a chance to pass her with two strikes in their 10th frames. Neither managed to strike, however, leaving Zavjalova with the $1,200 winner’s check. Ramirez earned $800 for second, while Guerrero collected $460.

B-Mets Blasted in Series Finale, 11-4

BINGHAMTON, NY- The Binghamton Mets allowed 11 runs on 17 hits as they were dropped by the Hartford Yard Goats, 11-4, Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton finished the season series against the Yard Goats with a 10-7 record.
Jan Vazquez led off the Hartford second by being hit by a pitch and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Wilson Soriano singled to center, scoring Vazquez to make it 1-0.
The Yard Goats struck for two more in the third on a two-out rally. Vazquez began it with a double to center and then scored on a Correlle Prime double. Zach Jemiola then helped his own cause with a ground ball single up the middle, scoring Prime to extend the Hartford lead to 3-0.
Kevin McGowan got the start and exited after three innings with three runs allowed. McGowan (4-1) walked two, surrendered six hits and was tagged with the loss.
Hartford poured it on in the fifth. Dillon Thomas led off with a double and scored on a passed ball. Vazquez later tallied an RBI single and scored when Soriano smoked a two-run double to right. Noel Cuevas followed with a triple of his own, scoring Soriano. Ryan McMahon capped the inning with a double to left center, pushing the lead to 9-0.
The Yard Goats sent 11 men to the plate in the inning and scored six runs on seven hits. It equaled a season-high for the B-Mets in hits and runs allowed in an inning.
Hartford got two more in the eighth when Ashley Greater drove in a pair with a single to make it 11-0.
The B-Mets tallied all four of their runs in the eighth. They loaded the bases with nobody out before Austin House issued back-to-back bases loaded walks to Dominic Smith and Victor Cruzado. Derrik Gibson later bounced a grounder to the left side of the infield that House fielded and threw wildly to first. Gibson’s single drove in one and the throwing error brought in another, cutting the deficit to 11-4.
Champ Stuart was 1-for-3 with a run scored, Gibson went 1-for-1 with an RBI after entering in a double switch and Smith was 0-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.
Binghamton now hits the road for an eight-game trip, beginning with four in Bowie. RHP Tyler Herron starts game one against LHP John Means for the Baysox. SWB Dominance of Chiefs Continues

Syracuse, N.Y. – The SWB RailRiders (Triple-A/New York Yankees) routed the Syracuse Chiefs (Washington Nationals) on Wednesday night, 10-4. The RailRiders (82-49) lowered their magic number to clinch a post-season berth to five. The Chiefs (58-73) have lost seven straight to the RailRiders.

Down 4-1, the RailRiders claimed command of the game with a five-run sixth that sent 10 men to the plate. The inning included run-scoring plate appearances by Jake Cave, Pete Kozma, Cito Culver, Mason Williams and Rob Refsnyder.

The rally helped Luis Severino (8-1) secure the win. He gave up four runs on nine hits and two walks while whiffing six. Syracuse reliever Justin DeFratus (1-2) took the loss.

The RailRiders’ road trip concludes at 6:35 p.m. in Syracuse on Thursday night. SWB southpaw Jordan Montgomery (3-1, 0.71) is scheduled to face right-hander Paolo Espino (7-10, 3.53).

The RailRiders return home for a short two-game stay at PNC field on Friday, Aug. 26 against the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins). It will be Pierogi Night at the park, presented by T&L Pierogies. The team will change its nickname and colors for the night, donning uniforms as the “SWB Pierogies”.
