Bowling Highlights Column 3-8-13

Rick Lake Scores 5th Career 300

Good timing for saying if my brother scores two 300 games then I can at least score one 300 game and such was the case in the February 25 Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes when 51-year-old Monticello bowler Rick Lake pounded the maples for his 5th career 300 game.
On Monday February 18 his brother Eddie recorded two 300 games in this same league and the two brothers also bowl on the same team.
Rick's 300 was bowled on lanes 11 & 12 using an Ebonite Gyro Urethane and Rick noted, "all balls were good hits and I had the messenger take out the 10 pin in one frame."
He bowls in this one league and subs at times in the Tuesday Mixed Firemen's league. Rick's Monday night average is 231. The 300 came in the last game of the night as he put together a 772 series off single games of 247, 225, 300.
The Monday night team he bowls with is Team Lake consisting of his father Mickey Lake, Roy Sweeney and his brother Eddie Lake.
Rick's fourth career 300 was bowled on January 30, 2012,  his third 300 was recorded April 18, 2011 and his second on March 8, 2010, all at Kiamesha Lanes
Lake comes from a well known and highly respected Sullivan County bowling family.
Lake's first perfect game was bowled 7 to 9 years ago at Kiamesha Lanes in the Monday Men's league.
Rick's mom, Joan Lake, has been a dominant force in area bowling circles for a number of  years and brother Eddie is considered one of the top male bowlers in the tri-county area.
Rick has been bowling for some 47 years starting out in the Kiamesha Lanes youth leagues.
In addition to bowling Rick golf's in a couple of area leagues and he and his wife are noted motorcycle enthusiasts who enjoy riding their Harley-Davidson throughout the country.
Rick has been married to his wife Jane for some 20 years. The Lake's have no children and Rick is a 29-year employee at the Catskill Regional Medical Center.

 The Bowling Tip
 By Mike Luongo

Learning the five fundamentals of a good bowling shot.
So very often we forget the most basic steps that are designed to help us have fun and score a good game.
These steps include getting ready in the stance position by taking a deep breath, bringing in air into your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
The next step is getting lined up, before the start of your match practice a couple of shots to see what the lane conditions are and even take a look at other bowlers  and see what they are doing. You should watch your ball reaction and don't force your ball to curve. Equipment selection is important here.
Want good balance then make your first step a short one.....this adds greatly to ending up with good balance when you release your ball.
Keeping a loose swing is also important, stay away from using too much muscle. When you are ready to bowl make sure your hand and arm are relaxed before you start your approach.
As you start the ball moving in your approach, make sure that the ball moves in a straight line toward the target on the lane.  This will prevent your swing from going off line. Let the rest of your swing be relaxed and keep it in a straight line toward your target.

Here & There Column 3-5-13

50.6-Cents Per Gallon Gas Tax

New York State government ought to be very proud that the gas tax paid by us folks who drive is the highest in the nation.
Senior Petroleum Analyst Gregg Laskoski of GasBuddy.com says the taxes are "a way to generate revenue for the government."
Why even New York  beats out California and Connecticut with its gas tax  which is nearly 50.6-cents per gallon .
Executives in the petroleum industry note that New York caps its taxes to the first $2 per gallon and when prices go up there is not additional benefit to the state but there is no tax cap on gas in counties so when prices rise the country gets more money.
Higher gas prices in Sullivan County benefits the County of Sullivan......one would certainly hope that no one in county government has anything to do with the gas prices we are faced with?
State Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor (R-Fishkill) has entered the gas tax fray saying he will introduce legislation to cap tax on gasoline at the national average and that a tax cap would save motorists 20 cents per gallon.
Lalor calls the state gas tax a regressive tax that hits hardest those who can least afford it and that us folks "pay the highest tax taxes in the country," some "65 percent higher than the national average which is 30 cents a gallon."
The Fishkill assemblyman feels that, "charging drivers 65 percent more than competing states is gouging by any definition."
Gas station operators are estimating that a tax cap would reduce gas prices 25 cents a gallon.
The tax games played in Albany are not very amusing to the driving public as they are hit with both state and local taxes.
It's time we call Governor Cuomo's price gouging hotline and tell them we are fed up with the tax gouging at the pump. The governor's website is www.dos.ny.gov
We support Assemblyman Lalor's introduction of legislation to cap tax on gasoline at the national average.

Eddie Lake Scores Two 300's

Forty-nine year old Monticello kegler Eddie Lake likes to bowl his 300 games in groups of two.
In the February 18 Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes Lake blasted the maples for a 300, 245, 300 and a 845 series using a Hammer Epidemic bowling ball on lanes 13-14.
Ed credits his accomplishments and his 16th and 17th career 300's  to a bowling ball recently drilled out for him by Josh Strang at Strang's Pro Shop located at Kiamesha Lanes.
Lake, in commenting about the two 300 games in the Monday night three-game series said, "all strikes were in the pocket for the two 300 games and in the middle game I had five in a row and in the sixth frame came up a little high and left the 4-9, buried the ball in the next two frames and left the 10 pin in each and then finished out with four in a row."
Lake is presently carrying a 234 average in the Friday Mixed league and a 227 in the Monday league, the two leagues he regularly bowls in.
Ed on Monday night bowls with the Lake team consisting of his father, Mickey Lake, his brother Rick Lake and Roy Sweeney.
   Ed recorded his 14th career 300 on Monday, March 12, 2012 and his 13th 300 on March 27, 2012.
And it's awhile since Lake has used wasn't using his old Hammer bowling ball but he still talks about his old Hammer and bowls with it  occasionally. He still believes in the fact that some of the old bowling equipment can still do the job.
About two years ago Lake had been without his 24-year-old Hammer as it was being repaired by Mickey Luongo and when he got the ball back within two weeks the old Hammer resulted in the Eddie Lake "300 game Express for his ninth 300 game on December 29, 2008.
During the 2007-08 bowling season Lake recorded four 300 games. Eddie had a 300 on January 21, 2008, scored another 300 in the second game of a match November 9, 2008 making it his third perfect 300 game that season.
Eddie on October 1 and October 2, 2007, made Sullivan County bowling history by bowling 300 games on consecutive nights all at Kiamesha Lanes.
His high 856 series was bowled in 2004 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Considered one of the premier bowlers in the tri-county area,  Lake is single, is employed by Kiamesha Lanes and comes from a well known Sullivan County bowling family consisting of brother, Ricky, his mother Joan and father Mickey.

The Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: This week's tip was suggested by a league bowler and applies mostly to those bowlers who are using modern bowling balls.
You may  not know that the modern bowling ball is porous with several different densities and has numerous chemicals in the cover stocks.
As these balls change temperature, the cover and core will expand and contract. Due to the different materials used for the core, inner core and cover, this fluctuation occurs at different rates.
Leaving the ball in a car when temperatures are severe, very hot or very cold, the expansion and contraction causes severe stress on the cover. This stress us even greater when a cold ball is used to bowl while it is still cold. This may cause the ball to crack.
So the tip is not only educational but let it serve as a reminder to take care of your bowling ball investment--avoid the experience that the above mentioned bowler went through--and if you carry your balls to and from the center, don't leave them in your car.             Mike Luongo is a certified IBPSIA Pro Shop Operator, Master Instructor, USBC Silver Level Coach and an Advisor-Special Events assistant with the Storm and Roto Grip Bowling Ball Company. Pine Pains Knows The Game

TRI-VALLEY ELIMINATED FROM
 BOYS AND GIRLS SECTIONAL PLAY

PINE PLAINS--It took a little over three minutes of the first quarter Wednesday night at Pine Plains to see why the Bombers are the No. 1 rated Class C school in the state as they took a quick 10-0 lead and  coasted to a 74-37 victory over Tri-Valley using most of their bench players in the second half.
With a 16-0 first quarter lead with under three minutes left in the quarter the Bears Rodney T. Jester scored the Bears first points on one of his signature three pointers. Then with  a 21-3 Bombers lead Jester again hit a three-pointer and finished with another two pointer for all of the Bears first quarter points as Pine Plains led after eight minutes of play 27-8.
It then became an outstanding display of offense and defense as Pine Plains waltzed away to a 17-2 record and will play S. S. Seward (15-3) tonight at 7 p.m. at SUNY New Paltz.
Jester led Tri-Valley (11-6) scoring with 12 points while Jesus Lozado added 10.
Pine Plains was led by Justin Cooper with 17 points, Zach Lydon with 16 and Tyler Lydon with 10.
At Chester Wednesday night Kathrun Jankelunas hit a three pointer with four second left in overtime to defeat Tri-Valley 45-42.
Chester (15-4) plays Tuxedo for the championship at 5:30 tonight at SUNY New Paltz.
Jankelunas finished with 12 points for Chester and Katlynn Greffrath had 18 points for Tri-Valley.

Martin-Jester Lead Tri-Valley Wins

MARTIN-JESTER LEAD TRI-VALLEY WINS

Two quarterfinal sectional basketball wins by the Tri-Valley boys and girls teams Monday night at Grahamsville were fueled by steals and the scoring talents by sophomore Caroline Martin and the outstanding three-point scoring accuracy of senior small-forward Rodney T. Jester.
Martin put her best foot forward in the girls game against Rhinebeck scoring 15 points to lead the Lady Bears to a 44-37 win.
The  low-scoring contest is attributed to sectional play when defense overshadows offense as was very clear in the first quarter of play with Chester outscoring the Bears 7-5 as Tri-Valley got scores of two-points by Mareena DiMilia  and three by Nicole Bradley.
Martin took control in the second quarter scoring nine points as Tri-Valley outscored Rhinebeck 17-9 to take a 22-16 halftime lead.
Defense again played a leading role in the third quarter of play with Rhinebeck outscoring Tri-Valley 10-8 cutting the Bears lead at the end of the third quarter down to 30-26. Tri-Valley scoring was evenly divided with two points each scored by Katlynn Greffrath, Sabrina Smith, DiMilia and Martin.
Defense and almost even scoring by both squads in the fourth quarter gave the Lady Bears the edge outscoring Rhinebeck by three-points, 14-11 with Martin adding four, Bradley two, Smith two, Greffrath five and DiMilia one.
  Both teams committed 11 turnovers.
Tri-Valley entered this game as the fourth seed while Rhinebeck was the fifth seed.
Martin led Tri-Valley with 15 points and five steals, DiMilia hit for seven points and had 16 rebounds, Greffrath had 10 points and Bradley scored seven points and contributed withe 14 rebounds.
Samantha Cassata led Rhinebeck with 15 points.
Tri-Valley coach John Tenbus gave high praise for Martin's play and for his team doing a good job of setting an on the ball screen and setting up better screens.
Rhinebeck finishes the season at 8-9 while Tri-Valley advances with a 14-5 record.
Tri-Valley girls were scheduled to play Wednesday night at top-seeded Chester.
Tri-Valley fans were awarded the second win of the night in the boys contest against Chester
thanks to the fourth quarter scoring talents of Jester who entered the game late in the third quarter with a severe head and chest cold that he went home with immediately after school to get some bed rest and arrived back at the gym just in time for his teams warm-ups.
During warm-ups it was apparent Jester's three-pointers were finding the mark and with Chester leading by two points at the 5:39 mark in the fourth quarter Jester scored his first of three trays, added a deuce and a foul shot for his 12-point fourth quarter total.  His third tray came at the 3:18 mark to push the Bears lead to 49-44.
Defense was again very evident in this game also as Chester outscored Tri-Valley 11-10 in the first quarter and 18-10 in the second quarter to take a halftime lead of 29-20.
Cody Exner scored six points for the Bears in the first quarter and Jesus Lozada led Tri-Valley scoring efforts in the second quarter with seven points.
Tri-Valley coach Brian Tingley changed his man to man defense  to a zone starting the second half and it paid off with Chester only scoring eight points in the third quarter and 14 points in the fourth quarter while the Bears scored 12 in the third and 29 in the final eight minutes of play.
Chester took a 37-32 lead going into the fourth quarter .
Shatic Smith got into the scoring column in the third quarter with nine points in the third quarter and added nine more in the fourth.
Adding to the Bears fourth quarter scoring besides Jester and Smith were two by Lazada and six by James Pugh.
Smith led Tri-Valley's scoring attack with 18 and Pugh and Lazada each had 11 points.
Chester's scoring was led by Brandon Sadlier with 22, Lawrence Young with 11 and Nick Seabrook with with 10.
Tri-Valley entered this game as the third seed and Chester was the sixth seed.
Coach Tingley said a key to the win was "changing to the zone defense and adding Jester's fresh legs in the late third quarter."
Chester coach John Marsilio credited Tri-Valley for "battling and having great resolve and the zone in the second half made us take some bad shots."
Chester finishes the season at 9-9 while Tri-Valley continues at 12-7 when they play Pine Plains, the state's top-ranked Class C team at 6 p.m. at Pine Plains Wednesday night.
Pine Plains has not lost a home game in three years and will features a college Division 1 pick in Tyler Lydon.

Tri-Valley JV Posts 16-0 Season

TRI-VALLEY JV GOES UNDEFEATED WITH 16-0 RECORD

In quest for perfection and a undefeated season there was never any doubt in last Thursday nights JV contest at Florida  that Tri-Valley wanted to seal the victory early.
In search for a 16-0 record Tri-Valley came out of the box fast outscoring S. S. Seward 18-6 in the first quarter off six points by Justin Swarthout, four by Zach Nilsen, four by Thomas Mungeer two by Jarred James and two by Dion Lynch.
Tri-Valley's scoring surge continued in the second quarter as they outscored Seward 19-10 to take a half time lead of 31-16. Nilsen added eight for the Bears followed by six by Shane Rennison and five by Swarthout.
The third quarter followed the same format for Tri-Valley as they outscored Seward 18-8 with Swarthout swishing the nets for nine points. Midway in this quarter the Bears pushed their lead to 30 points 50-20.
Coach Jason Closs then started to freely substitute as Seward outscored Tri-Valley 15-6 in the final eight minutes of play but the victory and a perfect 16-0 undefeated was already in the books with a 61-39 Tri-Valley win.
  Seward committed 21 turnovers to Tri-Valley's 13.
Swarthout lead the Bears scoring with 20 and Nilsen added 16.
Sophomores on the team included Jared James, Joe Krum, Dion Lynch, Zach Nilsen and Justin Swarthout. Freshmen included Thomas Decker, Nicholas Grossman, Chris Mosher, Thomas Mungeer, Jordan Prince, Shane Rennison, Brandon Worden and Robert Worden.
Coach Closs in commenting on the outstanding 16-0 undefeated season noted that "this season we were a team in every aspect, we focused on being unselfish, doing the right things and putting the team above ourselves."
He pointed out that "the team was committed to getting better everyday ," and "the work ethic in practice and the willingness to do the little things well allowed us to improve each game and we finished the season a considerably better team as a whole."
"The sophomores on the team really did a tremendous job setting the tone in practice and games, they were competitive, but yet unselfish," and "they took the time to mentor the younger players and the younger players listened which helped them to improve throughout the season," Closs said.
The coach emphasized that "the intensity and competitiveness in practice were at a very high level," and "we talked repeatedly about how JV basketball is not all about winning but rather about getting better and being able to contribute when we move up  to the varsity level."
In talking about the undefeated season Closs pointed out that "having an undefeated season was not an emphasized team goal but a result of doing the right things everyday."
"It was a great season that will produce a lot of memories for the team and as a coach it was a privilege to be part of these  memories," Coach Closs said.
Closs in addition to coaching the JV basketball team is a full-time physical education teacher and is the boys varsity soccer and boys varsity golf coach.

Bowling Tip
By Mike Luongo

Bowlers: Bowling Tournaments are an exciting and interesting part of the bowling season and this tip will be helpful to bowlers who will be traveling to different centers.
The tip: Make sure you have everything you need in your bowling bag since accessories may not alwalys be available.
  What should you carry?
  1. Bowlers tape in important to most bowlers, unless you are one of the few lucky bowlers whose thumb size never changes.
  2. Some type of thin patch so that you can take care of a blister or abrasion before it gets unpleasant.
  3. A wire brush for the bottom of your sliding shoe to keep it free of debris.
  4. Hand conditioner--the type depends on whether you hand is dry or moist when you bowl.
  5. Something to keep your bowling balls clean--what you need is determined by the type of ball and the surface preparations (many products available now are approved for use during competition).
  6. A scuff pad is also recommended for those of you who use sanded equipment , or in case of heavy oil (however, this must be done before competition starts).
  7. If you use finger grips, some crazy glue and possibly an extra set of grips.
  8. Finally, do not forget your towels and some alcohol wipes. Get in the habit of wiping the oil off the ball and if you get oil in the gripping hooles, the alcohol wipes will bail you out.
