SULLIVAN WEST DEFEATS TRI-VALLEY  67-49                                                    

  With the half time scored knotted at 31 each last Thursday nights non-league game between Sullivan West and Tri-Valley looked like it was going to be a barn-burner until the Bulldogs stifling second-half defense limited the Bears to four points in the third quarter and an easy 67-49 Sullivan West win.

  Tri-Valley took scoring honors in the first quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 12-8 off individual two-pointers by Alex Brown and Shatik  Smith and  three-pointers by Jesus Lozada and James Pugh.

  Sullivan West's Matt Cardona led his team's first quarter scoring efforts with 6 points.

  The Bulldogs got right back into the game in the second quarter outscoring Tri-Valley 23-19 off three two-pointers and four foul shots by Cardona to even the half time score at 31-31.

  It was turn-out the lights time as Cardona and Sullivan West turned up the heat in the third quarter with Matt pouring in three three-pointers and one two-point hoop for 11 points. Kyle Manzi added a three-pointer, Sawyer Erlwein two points and Patrick Pierce four points.

  Two two-point scores by Brown and Pugh were the lone four points put on the board for the Bears in the third quarter due mainly to outstanding defensive play by the Bulldogs. Turnovers by Tri-Valley helped Sullivan West as they took command of the quarter and the game. 

  Tri-Valley committed a total of  23 turnovers with 10 coming in the third quarter. Sullivan West had a total of 11 turnovers with five coming in the first half and six in the second half. 

  The fourth quarter of play saw Sullivan West outscore Tri-Valley 15-14 with the Bulldogs Manzi and Erlwein each hitting three-pointers.

  Sam Tingley and Devin Donnelley each had four points for the Bears in the fourth quarter.

  Sullivan West Coach Jeff Nober when asked about the difference between the first and second half said, "we played a very lethargic first half and we picked up on defense in the second half and that made the difference."  Bulldogs center Patrick Pierce in commenting about the win said, "we tightened up on defense in the second half."

  Tri-Valley Coach Brian Tingley said, "their defense and shooting in the third quarter proved to be the deciding factor in this game."

  Cardona led Sullivan West's scoring attack with 27 points and Sawyer Erlwein added 11 points for the Bulldogs who upped their overall record to 7-3.

  Alex Brown with 10 points and James Pugh with nine led the Bears who's overall record is now 8-3. 

  The Bears and Bulldogs will meet again this Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at Sullivan County Community College in a fund-raising game for Cancer and also the Championship of the Walton Central School 2012 Tip-Off Tournament that took place in Walton on December 6-7.

  Tri-Valley defeated Unatego in the first game of that tournament and Sullivan West won over Walton putting the two Sullivan County teams into the championship game. Snow and poor weather cancelled the two teams trip back to Walton for that game and theTip-Off Tournament title game has now been made a part of the Saturday fund-raising event.

Bowling Highlights 2-1-13

Keith Smith Rolls 847 Series

  Twenty-nine year-old Claryville bowler Keith Smith smashed the maples for a big 847 series in the January 28th Kiamesha Lanes Monday Men's league.

  His first 800 ever Smith racked up single game scores of 268, 289, 290 on lanes 15 & 16 using a Roto Grip Defiant Edge bowling gall.

  "It's my highest ever," Smith noted.

  Smith bowls with the Strike Force team consisting of his brother Gene Smith, Billy Curry and Dan VanAken. Smith added that he and his brother have been bowling together for some eight years.

  Smith recently recorded his second career 300 game on Janauary 7 in this same league. His first 300 game came on  November 16, 2012.

  Keith has been bowling for some 15 years and also bowls in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes. He maintains a 226 average in the Monday league.

  An active firemen and trustee with the Woodbourne Fire Department, Keith also plays softball in the Liberty Men's Slo-Pitch softball league. He is single and is employed as a golf course maintenance greens-keeper at Kutshers Golf Course.   

PBA League

Makes It Debut

  Rivalry in name only is still alive and well with professional sports in the  metropolitan New York City area and although the Dodgers and Giants are long gone Brooklyn is back on the sports map with the basketball Nets and now the new Brooklyn Styles Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) team.

  Although the Brooklyn team and the New York City WTT KingPins are not actually based within the city limits sports fans there will enjoy the notoriety the names will bring to their area.

  The Styles made their debut in the new PBA team competition last Sunday in Allen Park, Mich as they racked up a 225-215 victory over the New York City WTT KingPins.

  Owned by Grey's Anatomy actor Jesse Williams, the Styles held a two-pin lead heading into the 10th frame.

  In the 10th frame KingPins anchor bowler Pete Weber struck and spared in his half of the 10th frame then reigning PBA player of the year Sean Rash threw two strikes to clinch victory for Brooklyn. 

  Rash, the franchise player for his team, surrounded himself with veteran tour champion Ryan Shafer, PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. and several up and coming young players Jason Sterner and  Ryan Ciminelli.

  This past Sunday's PBA league round included the top five of eight five-players teams that had qualified over a span of four days and 32 team games on four different lane conditions as part of the PBA Detroit Winter Swing at Thunderbowl Lanes.

  The win for the Styles gives them 18 points in the race for the top five positions for the end-of-season  finals. 

  Owner Billie Jean King's KingPins earned 12 points for their second place finish on Sunday.

  The Detroit Winter swing includes five rounds of PBA league competition with points awarded after each round. The top five teams after five rounds will advance to the Elias Cup finals on March 31 at Woodland Bowl as part of the PBA Tournament of Champions week.

  The Elias Cup is named in honor of PBA founder Eddie Elias. 

  The PBA league preliminary rounds continue Sunday at 4 p.m. on ESPN with coverage of the  Chris Paul PBA All-Stars. 

Ed's Outlook

  Sullivan County and area bowlers who enjoy watching live the intense competition levels of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) tour get that opportunity in several weeks with the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) Masters event Feb. 18-24 at the Brunswick Zone Carolier in North  Brunswick, NJ.

  This is the only east coast stop for the PBA this year and is one of the major tournaments for 2012-2013.

  Definitely one of bowling's most prestigious events the Masters is open to any USBC league bowler who has averaged 190 or higher for 21 games during the past two seasons and of course includes all the PBA super stars who will compete for one of the higher top prizes offered by the PBA.

  The defending Masters champion is Mike Fagan.

The Bowling Tip

  This tip is for all bowlers, regardless of age or level of play.

  So very often today bowlers find themselves off balance at the foul line.

  While there are many reasons for this, what you may not realize is that most bad finishes are a result of a bad start.

  The tip: Check your first step and see if it's too long. This will cause you to push the ball away too far and then your feet will have to play "catch up" to keep you from falling down.

  Try a small first step next time......it may help.

Folks Want Board Of Supervisors

  With Sullivan County's unemployment rate now reaching 10 percent and the county legislature raising taxes by nine percent its time to circulate petitions demanding a vote for bringing back the Board of Supervisors as the counties governing body.

  While getting out to the various events I attend I have found Sullivan County residents voicing total  support for returning county government back to the former Board of Supervisors.

  There just is not very much support for the present county legislature and few support a change from an appointed manager to an elected executive.

  The County legislature and the suggestion of adding an elected executive is nothing more then adding one layer of government on top of another layer that just cost too much for taxpayers of Sullivan County to handle.

  We like what we hear from Sullivan County Legislator Cindy Kurpil Gieger who feels the county is moving toward new goals of fiscal accountability and oversight of residents tax dollars.

  In a brief conversation with Cindy recently we saw a dedicated truthful new political figure who wants to turn away from the present status quo and the good old boy form of government we have seen for so many years.

  She has made it very clear that the executive form of government is just another layer of government and that it could be very costly.

  Under a County Board of Supervisors (BOS) she would serve well as an elected board chairman because she is advocating that she  would "like to see us improve the foundation of government."

  That foundation so many residents of the county have told us is the return to the Board of Supervisors which is the body that supervises the operation of county government in a number of counties in New York State (NYS). 

  A Board of Supervisors in NYS has legislative, executive and quasi-judicial powers. In NYS the BOS is made up and composed of the various town supervisors from across the county. Some BOS after the 1960's assigned each member a proportional vote based on the population that supervisor represented. 

  Some of these boards have allowed county voters to elect a full-time county manager or county executive. 

  A petition signed by a large portion of county residents could go far in demanding a vote on returning county government to a Board of Supervisors.

Chester again Defeats Lady Bears               

                                                

   A strong defense, rebounding and control of the inside lanes by Chester along with Tri-Valley Lady Bears turnovers resulted in a 58-46 Chester win Tuesday  night at the home of the Lady Hambletonians. 

  The first quarter of play started with a slow scoring pace and at the 5:55 mark the score was still tied at 2-2.

   Chester finally went ahead 4-2 at the 4:44 mark and increased their lead to 8-2 at 3:48. That lead was pushed to 10-2 as the clock clicked down to  2:54.

  Tri-Valley finally got on the board to make the score 10-4 but a three-pointer by Chester's Ashley Georges pushed the lead to 13-4 with under two minutes to play in the first quarter.

  The Bears came storming back after the Georges' trey and posted six points while keeping Chester off the scoreboard as the quarter ended in Chesters favor 13-10. 

  Tri-Valley's first quarter ending scoring spurt didn't last very long as Chester racked up 14 points in the second  quarter to the Bears 3 points for a commanding 27-13 Chester lead. The Lady Hambletonians forced a number of Tri-Valley turnovers in this quarter and displayed a balanced scoring attack. 

  A couple of three pointers by Tri-Valley's Katlynn Greffrath and balanced team scoring helped Tri-Valley edge Chester 18-16 in the third quarter but it was evident at this point that Chester would record their second win of this season over the Bears.

  Tri-Valley fans remember well the December 14 overtime (61-56) loss at home to Chester and both teams had entered Tuesday night's game to see who would become  the dominating team in the league this year. 

  The win for Chester clinched at least a share of the OCIAA Division V title.

  The teams each scored 15 points in the fourth quarter with Tri-Valley being led by Greffrath with 8 points off a three pointer, a foul shot and two 2 point scores.  

  Greffrath led the Bears scoring with 20 points followed by Caroline Martin with 9. Simore Ayers had 22 points and 12 rebounds for Chester. 

  Tri-Valley's record is now 9-4 overall and 3-2 in league play. Chester is now 9-3 overall and 6-0 in league competition.

BEARS UP THEIR RECORD TO 4-1 IN LEAGUE PLAY     

                                                  

  Keeping pace in the race for first place with S.S. Seward in Division V of the OCIAA the Tri-Valley Bears improved their league record to 4-1 Wednesday night at home defeating Chester 74-59. 

  The race for a first place tie between Seward and Tri-Valley could come down to the February 19 game against Seward at their home court if both teams continue their win streaks leading up to that game. Seward also won on Wednesday night defeating Fallsburg 54-46 and is the only team to give the Bears a defeat. 

  A key game for Tri-Valley in their quest for a league first place tie could be their game February 7 at Fallsburg. The Bears edged Fallsburg by one point at home on December 21.

  The varsity game Wednesday night was delayed when the Chester Tri-Valley JV game went into three overtime periods before the Bears finally won 74-66 to extend their overall record this season to 10-0.

  The varsity game was halted at 6:34 of the first quarter when Chester's ace scorer (averaging 18 points per game) Brandon Sadler crashed into the wall under Tri-Valley's basket and lay motionless for several minutes before regaining consciousness. The Grahamsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps was immediately called while coaches and volunteers kept Sadler laying flat on his back giving what comfort they could to the injured player. The Ambulance Corp arrived, kept Sadler flat and secured his head to limit any motion before lifting him onto a stretcher for transportation to Catskill Regional Hospital in Harris. 

  Sadler was seen moving his arms and legs and received a standing ovation as he left the building on the stretcher. No immediate results of his injury was available at this time. 

  The game resumed after a 35-minute delay with both teams allowed a short warm-up session.  

  The Bears Cody Exner got the Tri-Valley scoring going with a three-pointer with Chester leading at the 5:30 mark 6-3. Another three-point shot by TV evened the score at 6-6 with 4:04 left on the first quarter clock. James Pugh popped in a two-pointer for the Bears as they took an 8-6 lead, Exner added another three pointer for a 11-6 Tri-Valley lead with 3:04 on the clock.

  Alex Brown added a driving layup good for two points to up the Bears lead to 13-6 and Rodney T. Jester popped in a trey to extend Tri-Valley's lead to 16-6. Brown put back a rebound for a 18-6 Bears lead before Chester scored two to close the quarter and a 10-point lead for the Bears, 18-8.

  Tri-Valley's Shatik Smith opened the second quarter with a steal and a driving layup for a 20-8 Bears lead. Second quarter scoring for Tri-Valley was led by three pointers by Jester, Exner and Sam Tingley. Each team scored 11 points in the second quarter to continue the Bears 10-point lead at 29-19. 

  Chester's Lawrence Young took over the scored efforts in the third quarter by scoring all 17 Chester points but the visitors were outscored by Smith with 6 points, Jester with 3, Jesus Lozada with 5, James Pugh with 7 and Devin Donnelley with 1. Tri-Valley led 53-36 going into the fourth quarter. 

  With Tri-Valley coach Brian Tingley freely using his bench in light of Tri-Valley's lead and also scheduled to play Sullivan West Thursday night at Lake Huntington Chester outscored the Bears 23-21 in the fourth quarter.

  Leading scorer for Tri-Valley was Rodney T. Jester with 16 points, James Pugh added 14  and Alex Brown had 10. 

  Lawrence Brown had 29 points for Chester  who falls to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Pro Scout At Showcase Event

College Showcase Attracts Professional Scout  

                                                      

  Major league baseball scout Ed Daub, representing the San Diego Padres,  joined 12 college scouts Sunday morning January 20 for the 15th annual high school baseball showcase evaluation day held in the Paul Gerry Fieldhouse at Sullivan County Community College. 

  The Pro Prospects college showcase provides important exposure and guidance for high school and junior college student athletes and over the past 15-years the Monticello based baseball/softball training facility has had over 50 different colleges and universities attend these showcase events with hundreds of players moving on to play college and professional baseball. 

  This event provided players with an opportunity to showcase their skills in front of attending coaches but also to receive feedback and projections from the Pro Prospects staff along with edited video footage that can be passed along to other coaches not in attendance. 

  The showcase was under the direction of Pro Prospects Director of Player Development Jared (Jed) Carrier and assisted by Steve Alhona who is part of Pro Prospects college marketing service advisory staff. 

  Three junior college and 40 high school baseball players from as far away as Montreal Quebec Canada and some as close as Liberty attended this showcase from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 

   Sullivan County was represented at this showcase by eight high school ballplayers including Dillon Taggart from Livingston Manor Central, Rodney Jester from Tri-Valley Central, John Anzano from Tri-Valley Central, Tyler Wood from Bloomingburg attending Pine Bush Central, Patrick Pierce from Sullivan West, Jon Harned from Monticello Central, Benjamin Kapito from Monticello Central and Jack Drapkin from Monticello Central. 

  College scouts from as far away as Georgia Highlands College in Cartersville, Georgia and as close as SUNY Sullivan took part in the showcase evaluations. Other colleges in attendance included Brockport State, Dominican College, Mount St. Mary, Oneonta State, Purchase College, SUNY IT, SUNY New Paltz, SUNY Orange, Utica College and Wilkes College. 

  Padres major league scout Ed Daub is a native of Sullivan County and was raised on a farm near Cochecton Center where he attended and graduated from Narrowsburg High School. He played high school baseball and was active at that time in both a Delaware Valley and Honesdale travel league. A graduate of Cortland State with a physical education major he played college baseball and his position of choice was catching.

  Daub now makes his home in Binghamton where he still teaches several days a week. He was a  former major league scout for 11 years with the Cincinnati Reds. 

  When asked what he was looking for in these young baseball players Daub said " I'm looking for good athletes."

  Carrier said he has known Ed for a couple of years as the Padres scout usually makes a few Sullivan County Community College games and has attended the Pro Prospects Junior College Showcase at Dutchess Stadium.

  "He's been a Binghamton area scout for a long time and is a real gentleman that gives everyone a fair look (not a common practice as many scouts are on the move)" Jed said. 

  Carrier noted that he had been talking with Ed recently about some of the Sullivan County Community College players when he told him about the January 20 showcase which Ed committed to attend. 

  Cartersville Georgia Highlands College Tim Havas is the special assistant to head coach Mike Marra who formerly was head coach at Sullivan County Community College and Monticello Central High School. He said, "I'm looking for players with skills and tools."

  Each student-athlete was graded by the scouts in running the 60-yard dash and from home plate to first base. Outfielders were judged by their approach to ground balls and fly balls, their crowhop, release, mph/arm strength while catchers were graded for footwork, release, accuracy and pop to pop throws. 

  Infielders were graded in footwork, hands, release and mph/arm strength. First basemen were looked at for footwork, hands, release and bag footwork. Pitchers had to show their skills in mph with a fastball, curve ball, change up and their overall mechanics. Offensive batting skills were judged by mechanics, contact and power.

Elks Tourney And Tournament Season  

  The 14th Annual Monticello Elks Scotch Doubles tournament will be held March 2 at 2 p.m. at Kiamesha Lanes. 

  The four game no-tap  tournament features a male and female bowler on each team.

  Entry fee is $40 per team and includes the famous Elks chicken B-B-Q at the Elks lodge following tournament play.

  The Japan Cup now known as the International Bowling Championships has once again been won by Tommy Jones who defended his title last Saturday at the Inazawa Futsal Stadium in Inazawa City, Japan.

  Tommy defeated Sean Rash 209-204 to win the $75,000 first place prize. 

  Singapore's Shayna Ng won the women's division by defeating Kelly Kulick 248-201, earning her $75,000.

The Bowling Tip

    Bowlers: This week's tip is for any bowler who ends up out of balance at the foul line when delivering a bowling ball.

    If you find your self unable to finish your delivery in a strong balanced position, it may be a result of your follow through.

    It is important that when you follow through on your delivery, you do not reach OUT with your arm. but UP with your follow through. 

   The reason?......if you reach out, the weight of the ball will pull your upper body forward and may cause you to lose your balance. If you reach up, you can stay planted in a strong, solid position to deliver your bowling ball with accuracy and leverage.
