Bears Have Trey Shooters

  The three-point field goal also known as a three-pointer, three or trey has added a spark of entertainment and precision scoring recently for two varsity players at Tri-Valley Central High School.

  The three-point arc in high school is 19.75 feet away from the point on the floor directly below the center of the basket and players must be behind this line and an official must raise his or her arm with three fingers to signal the shot attempt and the official must signal if the attempt is successful.

  Successful attempts and three-point shooting accuracy within a two-day period was displayed on Tuesday January 8 at Tuxedo High School when Tri-Valley's senior small forward Rodney T. Jester poured in 6 three-pointers only to have it topped the next night Wednesday January 9 by Tri-Valley's junior guard Katlynn Greffath who set a new girl's varsity school record by scoring 7 three-pointers against Tuxedo. 

  The two Tri-Valley varsity players accounted for a total of 39 points in their teams two victories.

  Katlynn is presently scoring at a 15.75 points per game pace and she currently leads Section IX in three pointers.

  The previous Tri-Valley girls varsity three-point records had been held by Amanda Krom who sank six three-pointers during the 2004 season and presently assists the varsity coaching staff.

  Jester is presently the No. 6 man off the Bears bench and considers baseball as his major sport but likes basketball for keeping him in shape during the winter months and for helping with his accuracy which he uses on the baseball diamond in pitching or throwing the ball from short stop to first base.

  Rodney has played varsity baseball since his sophomore year and this past summer was one of the leading hitters and defensive players with the Tillson Senior American Legion baseball team and during the fall was selected to play with the Northeast Pride Showcase team out of Northeast Pennsylvania.

  With the Senior American Legion team and the Northeast Pride team he played short stop and third base and carried a 300 plus batting average. He's looking forward to a career in baseball. 

  The three-point scoring efforts by both Greffath and Jester within a 48-hour period was exciting to see as both look forward to the remainder of this years basketball schedule.

Tri-Valley Edges Manor 50-49

TRI-VALLEY NIPS MANOR ON LAST SECOND LAYUP

  LIVINGSTON MANOR--Scoring the winning basket with seconds left on the clock is becoming part of the Tri-Valley varsity boys mystique this basketball season as they squeaked out another amazing win at Livingston Manor last Friday night.

  Trailing by one point with a slim seven seconds remaining Tri-Valley's point guard Shatic Smith took a driving layup to the hoop for the winning basket with 2.1 seconds left on the scoreboard clock.

  Smith's shot didn't at first find the net and rolled around the rim and finally through the net.

  The Wildcats still had 2.1 seconds but had to inbound the ball from under the Bears basketball and a long three-point attempt from almost half court never found the rim.

  Tri-Valley's bench leaped with joy in winning their second game of the season by one point on a last second score. 

  On December 21 at Tri-Valley Fallsburg had a four point lead with 11 seconds left but a three-pointer from the corner by small-forward Rodney T. Jester put the Bears down by only one point and six seconds on the scoreboard clock.  An intercepted inbound pass by James Pugh followed by a missed three-pointer by Shatic Smith rebounded off the backboard into the hands of Alex Brown  who banked in the winning basket, ( 73-72 ) at the buzzer.

  One could never have predicted a close game after the first four minutes of the first quarter as Tru-Valley jumped out to a 10-2 lead on several fast breaks and Livingston Manor turnovers.

  With the clock reaching the 3:37 mark the Wildcats had chipped away at the Bears lead to close the lead to 10-9 with two-minutes left in the quarter.

  Tri-Valley's Cody Exner then scored his third three-pointer of the quarter as the Bears took a 13-9 lead at the end of eight-minutes of play. 

  Livingston Manor evened the score at 13-13 on a nice turnaround layup by Josh Janik at the 5:54 mark of the second quarter. Both teams swapped two-pointers but several layups by Shatic Smith and a driving layup by Alex Brown pushed the Bears halftime lead to 24-17. Leading the Manor's scoring in the second quarter was Janik with six points.

  Tri-Valley outscored Livingston Manor 16-8 in the third quarter with Cody Exner adding two more three pointers for a Bears 40-29 lead. Manor's Janik continued his good scoring with four points.  

  The fourth quarter totally belonged to Livingston Manor as they outscored Tri-Valley 20-10 led by Janik's six points and  several Bears turnovers created by strong defensive play by the Wildcats. 

  Exner led the Bears scoring attack with five three-pointers and several two pointers for 21 points. Smith added 13 points for Tri-Valley who runs their overall record to 8-2 with this non-league win. 

  Josh Janik totaled 21 points and 14 rebounds for Livingston Manor who's record is now 3-6.

Bowling Highlights Column 1-18-`13

Durland & Smith Bowl 300's     

  The 300 bowling club at Kiamesha Lanes is growing and doing well this 2012-13 bowling season as Wurtsboro bowler Donald Durland recorded his 15th career 300 and Claryville bowler Keith Smith recorded his 2ed career perfect game with both scores being recorded in the Monday January 7 Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.

  Smith, 29, bowling on lanes 5 and 6 scored his 300 using a Roto Grip Shooting Star bowling ball with all shots right in the pocket. 

  The 300 was recorded in the first game of the three-game match and he followed it up with a 224 and a 711 series.

  He bowls with the Strike Force team and team members Billy Curry, Dan Van Aken and Gene Smith. 

  On November 16 Smith bowled his 1st 300 game, also on lanes 5 & 6 and using a Roto Grip Defiant Edge bowling ball and finished that match with a 257, 233 for a 790 series. He has also bowled a 792 series and has several 299 single games at Liberty Lanes. 

  Keith has been bowling for some 15 years and also bowls in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes. He maintains a 226 average on Monday.

  Keith is an active firemen and trustee with  the Woodbourne Fire Department, plays softball in the Liberty Men's Slo-Pitch softball league, is single and is employed as a golf course  maintenance greens-keeper at Kutshers  Golf Course. 

  Durland, 24, bowled his 300 on lanes 11 and 12 using a Storm Tropical Breeze bowling ball which he purchased several weeks ago at Pogo's Family Pro Shop in Newburgh.

  He noted that all 12 strikes were in the pocket.

  Donald's 300 game also came in the first game of the night and he followed it up with a 290, 236 and a 826 series. He bowls with the Monticello Greenhouse team with team members Jaryl Scott, his father Paul Durland and Vinnie Collura.

  Durland bowls regularly in the Kiamesha Lanes Monday Men's league where he maintains a 240 average, in the Tuesday Men's league at Hoe Bowl On The Hill in Kingston and Thursday in the Men's league at Tarsio Lanes in Newburgh. He subs in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.

  Donald maintains a 220 plus average both in Kingston and Newburgh.

  His 13th 300 was bowled February 6, 2012 in this same Monday Men's league and over the past several years he has shown steady league growth and at one point in time competed in the Professional Bowl Tour regional tournaments.

  Considered by bowling experts to be one of the premier men bowlers in the Tri-State area, Donald recorded his first-ever 300 game during the 2005-06 season as a youth bowler in the Saturday Morning Youth leagues at Kiamesha Lanes.

  Donald's mother Debbie Durland is one of the premier women bowlers in the Tri-County area and his father Paul and younger brother James maintain the high Durland family bowling standards.

  James is now bowling collegiate competition in Kentucky.

  Bowling since the age of 5, Durland is single and employed by the Monticello Greenhouse.

Ed's Oulook

  The New York State USBC has expanded its scholarship program to include elementary and middle school students.

  The association will award $16,000 in scholarships.

Parker Bohn Wins

World Championship

  Don't ever count Parker Bohn III out and the proof of the pudding was evident last Sunday on ESPN as the Hall of Fame Jackson, NJ lefty won the Professional Bowlers Association World Championship at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. 

  Bohn, win this win now has 33 PBA tour titles and he won this major championship after qualifying 24th in match play. This is only the third time ever a PBA bowler has won a major championship after qualifying 24th. 

  It's been a long struggle for the Hall Of Famer who has not won a title in more than four years.  His last championship title came in December of 2008 when he won the Cheetah Championship at the AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, NY. 

  In last Sunday's matches Parker had to beat some of PBA's finest with victories over Dan MacLelland, Rhino Page, Sean Rash and the top qualifier Jason Belmonte, 254-227.

  The 2012-13 tour continues this Sunday with ESPN coverage of the finals of the Japan Cup from Tokyo at 3 p.m. The all-new PBA league makes its debut with a live two-hour ESPN telecast on January 27 at noon.

Bowling Tip

  Learning the five fundamentals of a good bowling shot.

  So very often we forget the most basic steps that are designed to help us have fun and score a good game.

  These steps include getting ready in the stance position by taking a deep breath, bringing in air into our nose and exhaling through your mouth.

  The next step is getting lines up, before the start of your match practice a couple of shots to see what the lane coditions are and even take a look at other bowlers and see what they are doing. You should watch your ball reaction and don't force your ball to curve. Equipment selection in important here.

  Want good balance then make sure your first step is a short one......this adds greatly to ending up with good balance when you release your ball.

  Keeping a loose swing is also important, stay away from using too much muscle. When you are ready to bowl make sure your hand and arm are relaxed before you start your approach.

  As you start the ball moving in your approach, make sure that the ball moves in a straight line toward the target on the lane. This will prevent your swing from going off line. Let the rest of your swing be relaxed.

Bears Lose 1st League Game

SEWARD KNOCKS BEARS OUT OF 1ST PLACE     

                                          

  GRAHAMSVILLE--In a battle of the unbeaten and overall rights to first place in the OCIAA Division V the S.S. Seward Spartans edged out an overtime 54-49 victory against Tri-Valley last Thursday night at Grahamsville. 

  Both teams entered this pivotal game undefeated with 3-0 league records but the determining factor in this game were turnovers and very tough defense by both squads. 

  The Bears committed a total of 21 turnovers compared to Seward's 12 and this played out big in the Spartans victory. Tough interior defense by Seward also played big in this game. 

  Tri-Valley's first quarter of play proved to be the Bears highlight as they outscored Seward 11-6. 

  The Spartans picked up and improved their offensive efforts in the second quarter outscoring Tri-Valley 15-10 to even the score at half time 21-21. 

   Seward edged the Bears in the third quarter 17-10 to take a 38-31 lead into the fourth quarter.

  A determined Tri-Valley team put it together in the fourth quarter with three pointers by Rodney Jester and Cody Exner and driving layups and several key foul shots by Shatik Smith to outscore Seward 16-8 and a 47-47 tie at the end of regulation play.

  Overtime play went totally to Seward as Marquis Gonzalez scored all seven of Seward's points outscoring the Bears 7-2 on two foul shots by Smith.

  The win for Seward puts their league record at 4-0 and 6-2 overall. Tri-Valley's league record is now 3-1 and 6-3 overall.

  Shatik Smith had 19 points for Tri-Valley followed by 11 for Cody Exner and 8 for James Pugh.

  Marquis Gonzalez led the Spartans with 19 points.

  The play by both teams put them as teams to watch in the league championship playoffs.

Wachter Named Fullbright Specialist

  Sullivan County veterinarian Dr. Allen Wachter, who also serves as an Associate Professor at SUNY Delhi has been selected as a Fulbright Specialist by the J. Willian Fulbright Scholarship Board.

  Dr. Wachter pursued a Fullbright exchange because "teaching is a way I can give back to the profession, especially in countries such as Africa where their lives depend so much on the care of their animals."

  He posses prior experience working in Africa as a missionary in Zambia where he helped build an orphanage. Upon coming back to the United States he sensed, "that I needed to do more" and that led him to pursue the Fulbright exchange. 

  Allen is currently being considered for two projects in Sub-Sahara, Africa and as a Fulbright specialist he will be matched with an overseas academic institution that has requested assistance via the Fulbright Commission.

  Fulbright Specialists typically serve two to six weeks in projects that focus on strengthening and supporting the development needs of the host institutions. The projects Dr. Wachter is being considered for is to develop a veterinary technician program at the University of Namibia and to teach large animal management to veterinary science students at Mekelle University in Ethiopia.

  Alan noted that African nations go out of their way to welcome visiting faculty because their universities "simply have no one to teach the courses."

  Dr. Wachter presently serves as director of SUNY Delhi's bachelor's degree program in Veterinary Technology Management and also serves as an associate pastor at the Horton Brook Free Methodist Church. He is also the author of a children's book, Dance of the Bees.

  Being named a Fulbright Specialist is an outstanding honor for Sullivan County's well known veterinarian Dr. Allen Wachter.

Bowling Highlights Column 1-11-13

 Billie Jean King Becomes Team Owner

   Sports icon and World TeamTennis co-founder Billie Jean King is the first woman owner of a Professional Bowlers Association League team.

   PBA Commissioner Tom Clark announced that King, the winner of 39 Grand Slam singles, doubles and mixed doubles tennis titles, including a record 20 championships at Wimbledon, will be the owner of the New York City WTT KingPins which includes franchise player and PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber, 13-time Tour winner Tommy Jones, 2010-11 Rookie of the Year Scott Norton,two-time Tour winner Jack Jurek, John Szczerbinski and supplemental pick Brad Angelo. 

   "The model for the Professional Bowlers Association League closely matches the format of World TeamTennis, my core business,” said King.  “I am a big believer in the team concept and excited this is definitely not your typical bowling league.  It’s new, it’s groundbreaking and it is definitely going to be competitive.” 

    King joins Los Angeles Clippers star Chris Paul, former Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl champion running back Jerome Bettis, former NFL all-pro receiver Terrell Owens, actor/comedian Kevin Hart, comedian Chris Hardwick, and Pittsburgh Steelers all-pro linebacker LaMarr Woodley as owners in the ESPN-televised PBA League which debuts as part of the PBA Detroit Winter Swing Jan. 19-27 at Thunderbowl Lanes in the Detroit suburb of Allen Park, Mich. 

   “Billie Jean is an icon, a transcendent figure not only in sports history but American history and bringing her competitive spirit, ideals for sport and brilliant mind to our new professional bowling league as a team owner is a very proud moment for everyone at the PBA," said Clark. "While we know the League will benefit from her presence, the other teams should also be well aware that above all else, she is in this to win it." 

   ESPN will televise five weeks of PBA League competition beginning Sunday, Jan. 27, plus the PBA League Elias Cup finals in April. The celebrity owners will not compete on the lanes as part of official PBA League competition.

   During the first four days of the Detroit Winter Swing, the PBA will conduct a series of open-field tournaments (the Carmen Salvino Classic, Mark Roth Classic, Don Carter Classic and Earl Anthony Players Championship). Those four events will award individual PBA Tour titles and the qualifying scores posted by each PBAL team member will be combined to produce the team qualifying scores for the ESPN telecasts. All PBAL matches on ESPN will be Baker Format matches, where each team member will bowl two

frames in each game.

   This year will mark the 40th anniversary of King’s historic match against Bobby Riggs and the 40th anniversary of her founding of the Women’s Tennis Association. King also founded the Women’s Sports Foundation in 1974.

   King is also the owner of the Philadelphia Freedoms, one of the professional teams in Mylan World TeamTennis.  She co-founded the league, which showcases the best in professional team tennis competition playing an innovative team format based on a concept of gender equity.

   In 2009 King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. She was the first female athlete to receive that honor which was presented to her at the White House by President Obama. In 1990 Life Magazine named her one of the "100 Most Important Americans of the 20th Century."

Daugherty Wins

Scorpion Title

   After bowling a Professional Bowlers Association record-low 100 game in his only previous television appearance, Tom Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla., redeemed himself in the Bowlers Journal Scorpion Championship, winning three consecutive matches including a 200-182 victory over top qualifier Osku Palermaa of Finland, to capture his first PBA Tour title at South Point Hotel and Casino. 

  The Bowlers Journal Scorpion Championship finals, the fourth of five GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IV events, aired last Sunday on ESPN.

  Daugherty, who bowled his record-low game in a 299-100 loss to eventual champion Mika Koivuniemi in the semifinal round of the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, used his “thumbless” delivery to mow down an impressive field of high-rev power players in the Scorpion finals, raising his television average by 88 pins in the process.

  The GEICO World Series of Bowling concludes on ESPN next Sunday at 1 p.m. ET with the finals of the PBA World Championship, the first major championship of the 2012-13 PBA Tour season. Finalists will include PBA Hall of Famer and 31-time PBA Tour titlist Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J.; Canada’s Dan MacLelland; Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla.; reigning PBA Player of the Year Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill., and top qualifier Jason Belmonte of Australia, a five-time PBA Tour champion who is trying for his first major title.

  Pre- and post-telecast shows for all PBA-ESPN telecasts will be available on Xtra Frame, PBA’s online bowling channel.

The Bowling Tip

  Bowlers, this week's tip is for parents with children who either bowl in a youth league or bowl regularly with their own equipment.

  Parents......when was the last time you had your child's fit checked on their bowling ball at your local pro shop?

  Children tend to grow quickly and the gripping holes in their bowling ball must be adjusted to accommodate this growth.

  Bowling with poor fitting equipment can become frustrating and uncomfortable. In most cases, it will only take a minute or two for adjustments to be made.

  Also, if you child has his or her own bowling shoes, you can check yourself to see if the fit is acceptable. Do not wait for blisters to pop out on the toes.

  Remember, the game is meant to be enjoyed, not to be a form of torture.
