GENERALS LOSE IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

Missed foul shots and turnovers resulted in the Sullivan County Community College Generals loss Friday night to Rochester (Minn) Community and Technical College, 95-90.

Their bid to win the NCAA Division III national championship will have to wait for next year as the Generals entered this game shooting for their fifth title. They have won the national championship in 1992, 1995, 1996 and 2007.

The double-overtime loss saw Sullivan County shooting only 31 for 51 from the foul line and the Generals produced 31 turnovers.

SCCC is scheduled to play in the consolation game at 6 p.m. Saturday against Ocean County (N.J.) Community College. The winner takes third place in this national championship tournament.

Bowling Highlights Column 3-11-11

Dean Shattuck Scores 6th Career 300

Monticello right-handed power bowler Dean Shattuck smashed the maples for his 6th career 300 game Feb. 28 in the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes, the second 300 score he has rolled this 2010-2011 bowling league season.
Dean is considered a competent knowledgeable kegler with a keen savvy of lane conditions wherever he bowls.
His 300 on Feb. 28 came in the third game of the night and was bowled on lanes 9 and 10 using a MoRich LevRG bowling all. His total of the night included a 245, 215 for a 760 series.
Dean admitted that all the balls were in the pocket except for the 9th ball which hit high and completed the 4-7 trip for the strike.
The 49-year-old right handed bowler recorded his fifth career 300 game October 14 in the Thursday Men's league at Colonial Lanes in Chester.
Dean bowls regularly in the Monday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes but subs three to four times a year in the Thursday league at Chester.
His fourth career 300 was bowled December 23, 2009 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Always an advocate for the improvement of the sport of bowling and while a member of the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes Shattuck several years ago was one of the strong proponents of a shot change for this league.
Dean noted that at that time there was a need to change the oil pattern (or lane shot) because of the fact that the former easy house pattern produced averages that were not real. "We needed a truer shot pattern", Shattuck noted at that time.
Prior to his December 23, 2009 perfect game Dean purchased a new MoRich LevRG bowling ball and he credits that ball with his fourth 300.
Dean's third career 300 was bowled on January 30, 2008, also in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes with scores of 300, 238, 237, 771.
His previous high series was a 792. He scored his second career 300 game on February 21, 2007 in the Wednesday Men's league at Kiamesha Lanes.
Dean is a member of the board of directors of the Tri-County NY USBC. He maintains a 220 average in the Chester league and a 219 in the Monday league at Kiamesha Lanes.. Dean has been bowling for over 28 years.
Dean is married to Kelly and they have one daughter, Kayla.
Employed as an electrician in Rockland County Dean also owns and operates his own electrical contracting business.

The Bowling Tip

Bowlers: This weeks tip will help you execute and repeat good shots by having your body set properly so that you can use the laws of physics to roll the ball and eliminate tension in your swing.
As I've mentioned in previous columns, too much upper body and head movement make it very difficult to repeat shots.
The purpose of the stance is to place the body in an athletic position, eliminate all unnecessary movements during the approach and reduce TENSION.
Resting forearms against the body, in the stance, will help reduce tension in the upper body.
How do we do this?
Here are the four steps in the proper order for setting posture.
1. Set the feet (toward your break point).
2. Set your head (tilted over the ball).
3. Set your posterior (this is your balance point as you are swinging a heavy object).
4. Set the ball position close as noted above.
You are now in position to start a smooth approach. Maintain your body position and let the ball swing under your shoulder. You will find this easy to repeat shot after shot.
Note: Watch the PBA and note the body positions but keep in mind that your exact body position may vary to accommodate different physiology. Also, if your ball does not fit, it will be difficult to eliminate tension from your swing.

Jason Couch won his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title in four years by defeating Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 219-175, in the championship match to win the PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship last Sunday afternoon at Cheektowaga, NY.
The next stop for the PBA Tour is the Dick Weber Playoffs in Indianapolis this week.

Jason Couch Wins 16th PBA Tour Title
In PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship

Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., won his first Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour title in four years and the 16th of his career by defeating Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III, 219-175, in the championship match to win the PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship Sunday at Cheektowaga, NY.

Couch’s last wins came in January 2007 when he won back-to-back tournaments in Las Vegas and Fountain Valley, Calif. At the conclusion of the 2006-07 season he had knee surgery which took him out for the entire 2007-08 season.

“It’s been a long road to get back to even close to where you need to be physically and mentally," said Couch, who was the No. 1 seed for the tournament. “But I’ve been making good progress and bowling pretty well recently.

“Coming into this tournament I had high expectations because I have experience throwing plastic equipment and the way I throw the ball I can get the reaction I need bowling on the conditions we’re bowling on here.”

Bohn, who was hoping for his 33rd Tour win, ran into trouble in the second half of the championship match throwing back-to-back opens, one of which was a 4-6-7-8-10 split.

“I was fighting the feel of the ball and was having problems with the tape in my thumb hole,” Bohn said. “I had an opportunity to turn it around there but just couldn’t capitalize on it.

“Jason threw a complete game – I didn’t – and he was rewarded for it.”

Couch, who earned $20,000 for the win, left a 6-7-10 split in the fifth frame but made the spare and then threw three consecutive strikes which essentially wrapped up the match.

“I was disappointed with that shot but when I picked up the spare it loosened me up and I threw three good shots after that,” said Couch, who is the only player to win three consecutive PBA Tournament of Champions titles.

In the semifinal match, Bohn, of Jackson, N.J., defeated hometown favorite Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 213-207, to advance to the final match.. Ciminelli, who finished third, was hoping for his second career title having won his first six weeks ago in the One A Day Earl Anthony Memorial.

In the opening match, Bohn defeated 2009 PBA World Championship winner Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., 201-197. Smallwood, who finished second in the 2011 PBA Tournament of Champions, finished fourth and was also hoping for his second career Tour title.


The Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, which requires players to use identical “throwback” polyester (plastic) ball technology, is named in honor of the PBA Hall of Famer who dominated the plastic ball era in the 1970s. Roth, who is making steady progress recovering from a stroke he suffered in 2009, threw out the ceremonial first ball of the tournament.



The concept behind the plastic ball tournament is to put a premium on knowledge of changing lane conditions, subtle adjustments in hand positions and delivery techniques, and other skills rather than relying on advanced bowling ball technology.



The next stop for the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour is the Dick Weber Playoffs in Indianapolis March 8-13.

The final event of the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour’s 2010-11 season gets underway this week at Woodland Bowl when 156 PBA exempt players and PBA Regional competitors butt heads in a new Dick Weber PBA Playoffs.

The inaugural PBA Playoffs will feature three “elimination” television shows leading into the final live telecast of the 2010-11 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season on Sunday, April 17, when the PBA Playoffs championship and its $50,000 first prize will be decided.

Final seedings into the six regional pods for the playoffs were confirmed Tuesday. The new playoffs structure provides for up to three bye rounds for PBA Tour players based upon their points ranking. The top six players who have earned “byes” for three rounds are Bill O'Neill, Southampton, Pa.; Mika Koivuniemi, Hartland, Mich.; Chris Barnes, Double Oak, Texas; Tommy Jones, Simpsonville, S.C.; Sean Rash, Montgomery, Ill., and Jason Belmonte, Australia. Players ranking seventh through 12th will enjoy two bye rounds while those who rank 13th through 18th in points earned one bye round.

The Dick Weber PBA Playoffs is named in honor of the PBA legend who was born and raised in Indianapolis.
