Visit "The Wall That Heals"

A half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial "The Wall That Heals" will be on display from Thursday May 13 through Sunday, May 16 at the Museum at Bethel Woods.
On Veteran's Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund unveiled this replica in Washington, DC and it has traveled to communities throughout the United States.
Jan Scruggs, founder and president of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund explained, "in 1969, while many Americans were enjoying the music at Woodstock, I was serving in Vietnam. Those were the two big influences on our generation, reflecting the choices we made as young people coming of age in America. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was created to bring the disparate section of our population together, so it is fitting that "The Wall That Heals is coming to the site of the Woodstock festival."
This solemn exhibition will feature the dramatic replica, stretching nearly 250 feet in total length, as well as an Information Center and traveling museum, which provides a comprehensive educational component to enrich and complete visitors' experience.
The traveling museum chronicles the Vietnam War era and the unique healing power of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, while the Information Center serves as a venue for people to learn about friends and loved ones lost in the war.
The Museum at Bethel Wood director Wade Lawrence explained, "it is truly fitting that the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial comes to Bethel Woods, the site of the Woodstrock festival. " He added, "after almost four decades, there are still wounds that need to be healed, and this is the place to reconcile the differences of the past. We are proud to honor all who have served and laid their lives on the line for each of us."
There is no admission charge to visit The Wall, which will be on display on Bethel Woods' Great Lawn 24-hours per day.
Several area schools have already scheduled trips for their students to see The Wall.
The Vet Center in Middletown will also be on site to provide information on their readjustment counseling and outreach services to all veterans who served in any combat zone.
Bethel Woods is also offering free for this event Bethel Woods museum admission for U.S. Military Veterans who sign-in and U.S. Military Active Duty, Retired, and Reserve troops with ID.
This moving tribute to fallen Vietnam service people is something that all Americans, young and old, should see. Everyone will truly be moved by this experience.
Take some time to be part of this educational and emotional historic tribute to all American service people who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

Warmer Weather Brings A New Golf Season

Weather has been mixed the past several weeks, warm in the beginning of April, then cool and very cool but some nice golf days last week officially welcomes the start of the 2010 golf season in Sullivan County.
The mixed bag of weather has not deterred the launch of the Sullivan County golf season where some golf leagues have started and others are posting their summer schedules.
The grass is growing, some trees are budding so its time to tee it up....hit it straight and long and enjoy our golf season.
Golfing Highlights is back for our 12th season and we will continue to provide you with a column filled with golf league statistics and standings, golf tournament information, golf trips and vacation news, new golf equipment, a tip each week from a local golf professional Bob Menges, Ed's Outlook, golf feature stories and a weekly review of golf courses in and around our area.

We welcome back to our Golfing Highlights Column for his eighth year, Professional Robert Menges from the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club who will again entertain and hopefully educate golfers with his writing of the weekly "Golf Tip."
Bob, 43, started his golf career as an assistant pro at the Swan Lake Golf Club under then head pro Steve Eisenberg. From Swan Lake he and Steve moved to the Huff House at Tennanah Lake where Steve formed the Steve Eisenberg Golf Academy. The Academy and Bob Menges then moved to the school's locations at Eddy Farms near Sparrowbush and the Town of Wallkill Golf Course near Middletown.
Bob then took his first job as a head professional at the Tennanah Lake Golf Club and two years later became the head professional at the Swan Lake Golf & Country Club. He competes in local PGA tournaments, the local Pro-Am tournaments and the Metropolitan local tournaments.
Menges has been playing golf since he was 6 and remembers well starting out at the former Waldemere Golf Course at Shandelee above Livingston Manor.
Married to Kathy, who is a nurse, the Menges' live in the Jeffersonville area.
Menges noted that he will be giving private golf lessons and will conduct Junior Golf Camps during three different weeks this summer. The Swan Lake Golf Club presently has three leagues, Tuesday Men's, Wednesday Men's, Thursday Ladies and is planning a Friday Mixed league also.

Play golf To Stay Young.
The tip: In today's day in age, with modern medicine and advances in science, people are living longer and healthier lives. So many senior citizens are exercising and eating right to maintain an active life. Research shows that playing golf can add years to your life and keep the mind sharp.
I believe there is no other way to enjoy nature then being out on the course. Seeing the animals, hearing the birds chirp, certainly gives a sense of appreciation of life. Most golf courses afford gorgeous views, vibrant color and good old fashioned fresh air. There is no better way to spend a few hours with a group of friends while walking, talking and laughing your way around the course.
Everyone knows what a mental game golf is. One of the best ways to keep the mind sharp is to have one use your mind for the technical side of golf. Golf is the perfect sport for this because you are getting mental stimulation, you are counting strokes and analyzing your next shot.
In your search for the fountain of youth, let golf help you find your way. By getting exercise, stimulating your mind and having social interaction, you can stay younger and live longer.

Ed's Outlook

We once again bring up the topic of Golf Packages that we see taking place throughout various sections of our state along with Virginia and North and South Carolina and sometimes get concerned that more efforts are not being made to being put forth and sell Sullivan County golf with hotel/motel and dining facilities all pitching in and working together to get golfers to visit and golf in our beautiful golf paradise.
Golfers can go to South Carolina in the spring and fall and find packages that offer golf, cart, two in a room motel accommodations and breakfast and dinner for between $70 and $80 a day.
We have started to see some dinner and golf and lunch and golf packages offered in Sullivan and Delaware counties but there has to be more of an effort to get motel/hotel owners, restaurants and golf courses all working on the same page for a total golf package that will attract golfers to our county courses from May through October.
The golf economy here could stand a booster shot and we believe golf packages would help.

BOYS TRAVELING BASEBALL
TEAM TRYOUTS MAY 16

Tryouts for the new boys 15 years of age and under Sullivan County Thunderheads traveling baseball team will be held Sunday, May 16 from 2-5 p.m. at City Field in Grahamsville.
The field is located on the second left past the Tri-Valley Cenral School high school, several miles down that road on the right where the Little League Complex is.
The team will play in the ECTB Elite Championship Tournament Baseball League Hudson Valley division.
Home double-header games will be played Sunday's starting June 6 on either the Livingston Manor Central School baseball field or the City Field in Grahamsville. .
Team organizers stress that baseball players and parents must make a full commitment for team play and practice starting in late May through the middle of August.
The Sullivan County Thunderheads team will be managed and coached by Ed Townsend, Frank Exner and Paul Exner.

KULICK TAKES 2010
USBC QUEENS TITLE

Kelly Kulick proved she could beat the men earlier this year and Wednesday she came out on top against a field of the top women bowlers in the world, earning her second United States Bowling Congress Queens title.

The Union, N.J., native climbed the five-player stepladder, winning four consecutive matches, and defeating top seed Tennelle Milligan of Arlington, Texas, 232-188, to win the Queens at the El Paso Convention and Performing Arts Center.

Kulick, the No. 4 seed, made sports history when she became the first woman to win a title on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour in January by defeating Chris Barnes, 265-195, to win the PBA Tournament of Champions. On Wednesday, she added her third career major women's title to her resume.

"I feel like I've been carrying a four-leaf clover in my pocket and have had luck on my side lately," said Kulick, who earned $25,000 for the victory. "This has been the ride of a lifetime. The only way it gets better at this point is if in three months I'm driving a Lexus and have a million dollar endorsement deal."

The 2007 Queens champion and 2003 U.S. Women's Open champion, Kulick got ahead early in the match and never looked back against Milligan. Kulick threw four consecutive strikes from the fourth to the seventh frame, while Milligan failed to double in that stretch.

"It's heartbreaking for Tennelle because I know what a stellar performance she had all week," said Kulick, who was the runner-up to Liz Johnson at the 2009 Queens. "I just had a good performance all week long as well and it was just about getting to the show and seeing what would happen."

Milligan, the 2005 Queens and 2000 U.S. Women's Open champion, said she was pleased with her performance this week despite losing in the title match.

"I was excited, nervous, pumped up and ready to go out there and put on a good show," said Milligan, who earned $15,000 for second. "I just went out there and overthrew the ball. Once I calmed down, everything fell into place, but when you are bowling a game on TV, it's the fastest game of your life."

In reaching the title match, Kulick took out USBC Hall of Famer Anne Marie Duggan of Edmond, Okla., 226-176. With the third place finish and a $10,000 prize, Duggan became the fifth woman to earn $1 million in her career, joining Wendy Macpherson, Tish Johnson, Aleta Sill and Leanne Barrette-Hulsenberg.

Kulick escaped with a victory over Missy Bellinder of Fullerton, Calif., 220-212, in the match before when Bellinder left a pocket 7-10 split in the final frame. Kulick threw the last five strikes to force Bellinder to mark in the 10th frame, which she failed to do.

"I made an adjustment on that lane after I had the messenger take out the 10 pin on the previous shot," Bellinder said. "I moved a little bit right and squared up. Off my hand I thought I threw it perfect, and that's all you can really do."

To open the championship round, Kulick defeated Michelle Feldman of Auburn, N.Y., 186-170. After Kulick left the 4-7-10 split in the ninth frame and spared in the 10th, Feldman had a chance to throw two strikes and a five count to win, but left a 10 pin on her first shot.

The Queens, which will be rebroadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. EDT, featured a field of 201 of the top female bowlers in the world competing for a total prize fund of $166,750. Storm Bowling Products is the official ball company of the 2010 USBC Queens.

USBC SMART SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
TRANSFERRED TO NEW CORPORATION

The United States Bowling Congress has created a new corporation dedicated to the management, protection and promotion of youth bowling scholarships.

All funds in the USBC SMART (Scholarship Management and Accounting Reports for Tenpins) program have been transferred to the new entity called SMART Bowling Scholarship Funding Corporation. This new corporation is financially and legally independent of USBC, but will continue to use the SMART name. All scholarships previously earned through SMART remain in place with all benefits and eligibility protection for recipients continuing.

“Bowling scholarships can be a fantastic way to attract young people to our sport,” USBC President Jeff Bojé said. “We believe creating an independent corporation supervised by board members with bowling expertise and a financial background will build a new level of trust in SMART and lead to greater attention and growth of youth scholarships.”

The SMART Bowling Scholarship Funding Corporation has three directors on the board: Wally Hall, Pasadena Md., Steve Moehrle, St. Louis, Mo. and Sandy Hansell, Southfield, Mich. A primary objective for the board will be to use SMART for the nationwide promotion of youth bowling and to strengthen the entire bowling industry.

Hall, who will serve as Chairman, holds a degree from Harvard Business School and is currently a director on the Board of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame and Bowlers to Veterans Link charity. He is a former president of the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America and has 50 years of industry business experience including serving as President and CEO of Fair Lanes Inc. when it was the largest independent center chain in the country.

Moehrle holds a Ph.D. in business from Indiana University and serves as the leadership council distinguished scholar in accounting at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Before entering the academic profession, he was a member of the Ernst & Young audit staff and accounting policy officer at Citicorp Mortgage, Inc. Moehrle bowled competitively for highly-regarded collegiate teams at Missouri-St. Louis and Indiana. He is currently member of the USBC Board of the Directors with a term ending in August.

Hansell holds a law degree from Harvard and has been active in the bowling industry since becoming a center owner in the 1970s. He is the founder of Sandy Hansell and Associates, Inc., a national firm dedicated to brokering and valuing bowling centers, along with tax planning and financial consulting for bowling proprietors.

“The mission of the new corporation is to be a trusted custodian of scholarship funds, bring more attention to the benefits of using SMART and continue providing a service that protects the interest of young people,” Hall said. “SMART assets will be professionally managed and the focus will be on safety and preservation of principal as well as effective and efficient administration with complete transparency.”

The SMART program continues to be the only bowling scholarship management program providing full protection of a student-athlete’s eligibility status. Administrative services will continue to be provided by USBC. Scholarship recipients and providers should notice no change in operational procedures related to the program.

Senior Miller High Life Classic
In PBA Senior Tour Debut

Recently-crowned Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., picked up where he left off at the conclusion of the 2009-10 Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour season in April by winning the Senior Miller High Life Classic May 5 at George Pappas Victory Lanes in Mooresville, NC

Making his PBA Senior Tour debut, Williams, the PBA Tour’s all-time leader in career titles with 47, notched his first Senior Tour win by defeating Keith Sharp of Orlando, Fla., 267-245 in the championship match.

“It’s a little more relaxed out here than the regular tour but that doesn’t mean these guys aren’t competitive,” said Williams, who now owns a record seven PBA Player of the Year honors. “Fortunately I averaged close to 260 today and I needed to bowl that well because I had some tough opponents who were bowling very well including Keith in the final match.

“In general it was a lot of fun and the guys made me feel very welcome out here on the Senior Tour.”

In the semifinal match Williams defeated Roger Kossert of Lithia, Fla., 269-211 and Sharp defeated Dave Patchen of Oregon, Ohio, 218-147 to advance to the championship match.

“I didn’t bowl as well as I would have liked in qualifying but in match play the condition seemed to be a bit tighter which was a better match up for the ball I was using and where I was playing on the lane,” Williams added.

After a three-week break, the Senior Tour will resume with the PBA Senior Northern California Open in Brentwood May 30-June 2 followed by the PBA Senior U.S. Open and USBC Senior Masters in Las Vegas.

“I’ll bowl in Brentwood and the Senior Masters for sure,” said the 50-year-old Williams, “Because of my schedule it doesn’t look I’ll make the Senior U.S. Open and I’ll just have to see how things work out during the rest of the summer.”

Bob Kelly of Dayton, Ohio, rolled three 300 games in the tournament which tied the record for most 300 games by an individual in a tournament with reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr who set the mark in last week’s Senior Columbus Open. Kelly now has four 300s for the season which also ties that record.

Thunder 102's Big Weekend

Thunder Country's big weekend is upon us and Thunderheads and all area folks will have the opportunity to see the first Miss Teen, Miss and Mrs. Thunder Country International Pageant Friday evening May 7 at the Villa Roma Resort and on Saturday evening May 8 Thunder Bash will take place at the Monticello Casino & Raceway.
The Friday Pageant age groups is Teen (13-18), Miss (19-29 single with no children) and Mrs. 21-56 currently married and residing with spouse).
Competition events include a private interview-business attire, western wear and attire must be modern cowgirl attire, evening wear with evening gown attire and on-stage interview.
All contestants agreed to becoming a Thunderhead.
Tickets for the show starting at 7:30 is $5 but anyone showing a Thunder Bash ticket at the door will receive free entry to the pageant.
A wonderful Pageant evening can be expected at the Villa Roma Resort.
Recording artist Jimmy Wayne headlines the Saturday 7 p.m. Thunder Bash at the Raceway. Also appearing are the Iron Cowboy and Somerville and Alyssa Startup.
Thunder Bash is free but you need a ticket to get in and they are available at many area merchants.
Jimmy Wayne is an American country music singer and songwriter. He released his self-titled debut album in 2003 on the Dream Works Records label. Four singles were released from it, including, "Stay Gone" and I Love You This Much", which both reaching the Top Ten on the Billboard country charts.
A second album, "Do You Believe Me Now" was released in August 2008 via Bog Machine Records subsidiary Valory Music Group, and its title track became his first Number One hit in late 2008.
As a teenager finishing high school, Jimmy worked as a guard at the Gaston Correctional Facility where he took songwriting advise from an inmate. He earned an associates degree in criminal justice at a community college, worked as a corrections officer for 4 years before moving to Nashville to pursue his musical interests.
In Nashville Wayne worked as a songwriter for Acuff-Rose Music, collaborating with Dean Dillon, Sanger D. Shafer and others while practicing his guitar and songwriting skills.
In September 2009, Wayne release a cover version of Hall & Oates' 1976 single "Sara Smile." with backing vocals from Hall & Oates.
In mid 2009 he joined Brad Paisley an Dierks Bentley on the American Saturday Night tour.
Country music fans are in for a real treat with the 2010 Thunder Bash.
