OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKLY GLANCE
(For May 1 - May 7, 2019)
New leaders emerge in Regular Team, Regular Singles at 2019 USBC Open Championships
A high-scoring week at the 2019 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships featured new leaders in Regular Team and Regular Singles.
Melrose Bowl Red of Norwood, Minnesota, surged to the top of the Regular Team standings with a consistent performance May 2 that included games of 1,089, 1,189 and 1,023 for a 3,301 total. The effort also marked the first time the 3,300 threshold had been crossed in the tournament's two visits to the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.
Thomas Jones, who rolled a 299 game during his team event at the 2006 tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, set the pace for Melrose Bowl Red this year with a 695 series. He was followed by John Hommes (658), Chris Castle (656), Craig Schiffler (655) and Michael Wirz (637).
S and B Pro Shop 1 of Warren, Michigan, the defending Regular Team champion, previously held the lead this year with a 3,254 total, rolled March 23.
Mitch Beasley of Clarksville, Tennessee, raised the bar in Regular Singles with games of 246, 297 and 269 for an 812 series May 4. Ron Case of Oakley, California, previously held the lead with 803.
Beasley's 800 was the fourth of the 2019 tournament (all four have come in singles) and made him the 36th bowler in tournament history with an 800 series and 300 game on the championship lanes. He had one of the 10 perfect games rolled at the Bowling Plaza during the tournament's 2017 debut at the new facility.
His individual performance helped Bowling Headquarters/EFX of Muskego, Wisconsin, into third place in Team All-Events with a 9,717 total. Mento Produce of Syracuse, New York, leads with 9,983.
Seven bowlers reach milestones at South Point Bowling Plaza
Frank Clay of Crystal Lake, Illinois, headlined the list of seven bowlers who reached milestones this week at the USBC Open Championships as he became the 13th bowler in history to reach 65 years of participation on the tournament lanes.
He was recognized for his longevity May 4 and received a chevron, plaque and custom ring to commemorate the milestone.
Clay, an 88-year-old right-hander, also is one of 22 members of the tournament's elite 100,000-Pin Club. He entered the 2019 Open Championships 16th on the all-time pinfall list and added sets of 454 in doubles, 418 in team and 392 in singles for a 1,264 all-events total.
In 65 years on the biggest stage in bowling, Clay has knocked down 103,864 pins for a career average of 179.
Mac Segar of Osprey, Florida, and Michael Wiser of Grand Blanc, Michigan, added their names to the short list of bowlers who have notched 55 appearances at the Open Championships. Both reached the 55-year mark May 1, and each received a chevron, plaque and engraved watch for the achievement.
Ronald Miller of Mount Morris, Michigan, John Vorpagel of Sterling Heights, Michigan, Dwight Henry of Wichita, Kansas, and Jay Joyner of Minneapolis all celebrated 50 years of tournament participation this week.
Miller hit the lanes May 1, Vorpagel bowled May 2 and Henry and Joyner both made their ceremonial marches to the lanes at the South Point Bowling Plaza on May 7.
USBC record holder adds to success at USBC Open Championships with second 300
Tom Jordan of Wayne, New Jersey, rolled his second career 300 at the USBC Open Championships on May 3, becoming just the 32nd bowler in 116 years of tournament history with multiple perfect games on the championship lanes. He first achieved the feat in Billings, Montana, in 2002, where a record 64 perfect games were rolled.
This year's perfect performance, the sixth 300 of the 2019 event in Las Vegas, came between games of 247 and 221 for a 768 series, which is ninth in the Regular Singles standings.
Jordan struck just 13 times on the way to a 526 series in his team event May 2 and 12 times during his 502 series in doubles May 3, before the strikes started piling up. He struck 28 times in 36 opportunities during singles. He finished with a 1,796 all-events total.
He first etched his name in the USBC record book in 1989 when he rolled a then-record 899 series (300-299-300) in league. It was the first three games of a four-game set. He finished with another 299, giving him a 1,198 total, which still stands as a USBC record for an individual four-game series.

Steven Alexander of Toledo, Ohio, made a run at perfection May 6, before a 5 pin on his final offering left him with the fourth 299 of this year's tournament.
Alexander's moment in the spotlight came in his final game of singles on the way to a 655 series. He added 545 in doubles and 543 in team for a 1,743 all-events total.
Defending champions won't repeat in 2019
The members of Red Carpet Lanes of Greenfield, Wisconsin, were in Las Vegas this week to defend the Team All-Events title they won at the 2018 USBC Open Championships in Syracuse, New York.
After nine games over two days at the South Point Bowling Plaza, the group fell short of becoming the first team since 1998 to win back-to-back Team All-Events titles. This year's 9,345 effort placed them just outside the top 20. Mento Produce of Syracuse leads with 9,983.
Team All-Events includes the combined all-events totals of all five team members.
David Beres led the way this year for Red Carpet Lanes with a 1,941 all-events total and was followed by Kenneth Duffield (1,902), Chad Maas (1,879), Christopher Pierson (1,827) and David Labinski (1,796).
The group claimed the crown in 2018 with a 10,252 total.

A look ahead
Three bowlers are scheduled to reach milestones this week at the USBC Open Championships.
Michael Schmid of Arden Hills, Minnesota, will make his 58th tournament appearance and needs 1,211 pins to become the 23rd member of the elite 100,000-Pin Club. He'll compete May 7 and May 8.
Clinton Zavakos of nearby Henderson, Nevada, will become the 14th bowler in history to reach 65 years of participation at the Open Championships. He'll be recognized for his longevity before the 11 a.m. (2 p.m. Eastern) team squad May 9.
On May 13, Dennis Lecher of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, will celebrate 55 years of tournament participation.
Finally, defending Regular Doubles champions Richard Eighme of Waterloo, Iowa, and AJ Chapman of St. Paul, Minnesota, will visit the South Point Bowling Plaza on May 12-13. They'll put their title on the line during the 2:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. Eastern) doubles and singles squad May 13.
